Abstract

A method of connecting wiring with a printed circuit board (10) includes the step of manufacturing the PCB (10) so that solder pads (11) for components are provided with conductive tracks (13 to 20) each of which extends to a corresponding one of a series of pins located at a common edge of the PCB (10). In a subsequent step of the method, interconnection of conductors with the pins is effected by push-on connection with the pins of sockets located at free ends of the conductors.

Description

A Method of Interconnectina Wiring with a PCB This invention relates to a method of interconnecting wiring with a printed circuit board.
It is known to provide electronic control circuits for domestic appliances, such as vacuum cleaners, and, generally, such circuits include printed circuit boards (PCBs). Although the same general functions may be carried out by different domestic appliances in a range, it has been the practice to provide different PCBs for the appliances when they are required to provide additional features, such as "bag full" indication. This has necessitated manufacturing, stocking and utilising a range of different PCBs. Furthermore, the position and length of interconnecting wiring is different for appliances with different user interfaces, such as rotary or slider potentiometer or switch mechanisms for selecting suction (speed) settings, and certain applications have necessitated long wire connections which could not be automatically soldered as the wires interfere with the solder bath during the manufacturing process. All of these factors have required manual involvement and a higher than normal degree of supervision to ensure quality control.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of interconnecting wiring with a printed circuit board including the steps manufacturing a printed circuit board having a plurality of solder tracks each of which extends to a corresponding one of a series of terminals and subsequently connecting conductors to the terminals.
The invention thus provides a method of interconnecting wiring with a PCB which is a two-stage process and the second stage, ie connection of conductors to the terminals of the PCB, may be carried out at a different location from where the PCB is manufactured. The conductors generally are grouped in a harness and the second stage may be carried out at the premises of a supplier of such harnesses.
The invention thus also provides a method of manufacture which facilitates a reduction of the range of PCBs used hitherto because solder tracks and associated terminals may be provided for incorporation in circuits for providing a whole range of requirements and, if any are not required, the terminals for such requirements are not used. A single design of PCB may thus be utilised for a range of appliances where PCBs of different format would previously have been used.
It will be appreciated, therefore, that a method of manufacture in accordance with the present invention provides an automated, modular system with easier interconnections than hitherto. Preferably this is achieved by push-on connection of conductors and terminals using square auto inserted pins or edge connection, the connection being made direct with the solder tracks. Such modular configuration provides for reduction of production costs, minimum change over times during production and use of the same production jigs and test fixtures for the whole range of PCB production.
Following is a description, by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of a printed circuit board, of one method of carrying the invention into effect.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a printed circuit board 10 adapted for interconnection wiring in accordance with the present invention. The board 10 comprises a plurality of solder pads, one of which is shown at 11, for connection to electrical components adapted to be mounted on the board 10, and a plurality of solder tracks, one of which is shown at 12, for connecting the components one to another in an electrical circuit.
The board also includes eight additional solder tracks, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20 for interconnecting the components externally of the board 10, each of the eight additional solder tracks 13 to 20 inclusive terminating in a corresponding one of series of lands 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28. The lands 21 to 28 are each provided with an aperture 29 adapted to receive a corresponding one of a plurality of pins (not shown).
In use, the solder tracks 13 to 20 are interconnected externally of the board 10 with conductors (not shown) of a harness, each of the conductors having a socket end portion for push-on connection with corresponding pins.
Alternatively, the board 10 may be interconnected edge-toedge with another component wherein the lands 21 to 28 engage directly with conductors of the other component.
