Description

Title - Hinge This invention relates to a hinge, and in particular to an adjustable hinge of utility in the hanging of doors or windows.
When, for example, a door is hung, it is often difficult to achieve perfect alignment of the door within the frame. So-called "heel and toe" adjustment must often be carried out. Adjustable hinges are known which simplify such adjustment, but such hinges suffer from the disadvantage that they may be insecure.
There has now been devised an improved form of adjustable hinge which overcomes or substantially mitigates the above-mentioned disadvantage.
According to the invention, a hinge for the hanging of a door or window (hereinafter referred to as a "door") within a frame comprises a frame fixture adapted for securing to the frame, a connecting member pivotally mounted to the frame fixture, and a door fixture adapted for securing to the door, wherein the door fixture is received within a channel in the connecting member and, in use, is concealed by the connecting member.
The hinge according to the invention is advantageous primarily in that the connecting member prevents the door fixture being removed from the door. The hinge is therefore secure, yet adjustment of the position of the door fixture within the connecting member is relatively easily achieved, permitting adjustment of the position of the door within the frame.
Preferably, the door fixture is secured to the connecting member by threaded engagement of a bolt passing through the end of the connecting member adjacent the frame fixture with the door fixture, or with a nut captivated within the door fixture.
Preferably, adjustment is also possible of the position of the connecting member relative to the frame fixture. This is conveniently achieved by mounting of the connecting member on an eccentric pin which may be rotated to one of several positions within the frame fixture.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hinge according to the invention, for use with a door; Figure 2 shows views of a frame fixture forming part of the hinge of Figure 1 in (a) perspective, (b) plan, (c) front elevation, (d) side elevation, and (e) section along the line A-A in Figure 2(b); Figure 3 shows views of a fixing block forming part of the hinge of Figure 1 and which, in use, is secured to the door, in (a) perspective, (b) plan, (c) underside plan, and (d) end elevation; Figure 4 shows views of a connecting member forming part of the hinge of Figure 1 and which, in use, is pivotally connected to the frame fixture of Figure 2 and secured to the fixing block of Figure 3, in (a) perspective, (b) plan, (c) underside plan, (d) end elevation, (e) side elevation, and (f) section along the line A-A in Figure 4(b); and Figure 5 is a perspective view of an adjustable pin forming part of the hinge of Figure 1.
Referring first to Figure 1, a hinge according to the invention is for use with a door (eg an extemal door to residential premises) and comprises a frame fixture 10, a connecting member 20 pivotally connected thereto, and a fixing block 30 which, in use, is secured to the door.
The frame fixture 10 (see Figure 2) is die cast in zinc alloy and comprises a pair of upstanding supports 12,13 with respective coaxial bores 14,15 to receive a pin 40 (shown in Figure 5 and described below). One end of the bore 14, which is of larger diameter than the other bore 15, is of hexagonal section to receive a similarly-shaped head 41 of the pin 40 in a non-rotatable fashion. Threaded bores 16,17 are provided in the supports 12,13 to receive grub screws (not shown) for securing the pin 40 in the bores 14,15. Fixing holes 18,19 are also provided, between the upstanding supports 12,13 for fixing screws (not shown) by which the fixture 10 is secured to the frame of the door.
The connecting member 20 is also die cast in zinc alloy and comprises a body 21 having a generally T-shaped channel 22 formed therein (see Figure 4). The channel 22 is closed at one end, from which projects an extension 23 with a circular bore 24. In use, nylon bushings 25,26 (see Figure 1) are inserted into the bore 24 and the extension 23 is located between the supports 12,13 of the fixture 10. The pin 40 is then passed through the coaxial bores 14,15 (and hence the circular bore 24), thereby captivating the connecting member 20.
As can be seen from Figure 5, the pin 40 has an eccentric central portion 42. This permits adjustment of the position of the connecting member 20 relative to the fixture 10. To achieve this, the pin 40 is partially withdrawn so that the head 41 disengages from the hexagonal end section of the bore 14. The pin 40 may then be rotated and fixed in one of six positions by reengagement with the hexagonal opening. Once in the desired position, the pin 40 is secured by engagement of grub screws (not shown) in the threaded bores 16,17.
As shown in Figure 3, the fixing block 30, again die cast in zinc alloy, is of T-section and is dimensioned to be received within the channel 22 of the connecting member 20. The block 30 has a cut-out portion 32 which receives a correspondingly-shaped projection 27 at the rear of the channel 22. The block 30 has a groove 33 which passes through a recess 34 which in turn is dimensioned to receive a hexagonal nut (not shown) in a non-rotatable fashion. The projection 27 has a plain bore 28 through which, in use, a threaded bolt (not shown) is passed to engage the hexagonal nut captivated in the recess 34. Threaded bores 29 are provided in the sides of the connecting member 20 which can receive grub screws (not shown) to support and adjust the position of the fixing block 30 in the channel 22. Fixing holes 35,36 are provided for fixing screws (not shown) by which the fixing block 30 is secured to the door.
In use, the door is typically mounted on two hinges of the kind described. The fixing blocks 30 (with nuts captivated in the recesses 34) are screwed to the door at appropriate positions, and the frame fixtures 20 to the frame. The connecting members 20 are then fitted to the frame fixtures 20 in the manner described above. The door is offered up to the connecting members 20 such that the fixing blocks 30 are received within the channels 22. With the door wide open, threaded bolts are then passed through the bores 28 and engaged with the captivated nuts. By tightening of the bolts the fixing blocks 30 are brought into tight engagement with the connecting members 20.
Once preliminary mounting of the door on the hinges has been carried out, the alignment of the door may be adjusted. There are three mechanisms by which adjustment is possible. First, the position of the connecting member 20 relative to the frame fixture 10 can be adjusted by rotation of the pin 40, as described above. Once this adjustment is complete, the position of the pin 40 is fixed by pressing its head 41 into engagement with the end of the bore 14, and by tightening the grub screws in the threaded bores 16,17. Secondly, the position of the fixing block 30 relative to the connecting member 20 can be adjusted by rotation of the threaded bolt engaged with the captive nut. Thirdly, some adjustment of the position of the fixing block 30 within the channel 22 is possible by adjustment of grub screws in the threaded bores 29.
It is important to note that the fixing screws by which the fixing block 30 is fixed to the door are, in use, completely screened by the connecting member 20. When the door is closed, even if the bolt received within the bore 28 is disengaged from the captive nut, the door cannot be taken off the hinge. Also, the grub screws which secure the pin 40 are accessible only when the door is open. When the door is closed, these components are masked and therefore cannot be tampered with. The fixing screws (not shown) by which the frame fixture 10 is secured to the frame are likewise exposed only when the door is open.
