Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO HINGES
This invention relates to hinges for mounting a door, window or like movable member on a fixed frame.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide a hinge comprising two hinge parts pivotally connected by a hinge pin received in an eccentric bore of a bush mounted in an axial bore in one of the hinge parts, the bush and axial bore having complementary non-circular cross-sections for mounting the bush in any selected one of a plurality of angular positions in which the bush is located against rotation.
According to a second aspect of the Invention we provide a hinge comprising two hinge parts pivotally connected by a hinge pin and an adjustable bearing assembly for mounting one of the hinge parts on a movable member or a fixed frame.
The Invention In each of Its aspects will now be described In more detail by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein FIGURE 1 Is an exploded perspective view of a hinge;
FIGURE 2 Is a rear view of one hinge part and the Intermediate plate of the bearing assembly;
FIGURE 3 Is a section on the line A-A of Figure 2; and
FIGURE 4 is a section, to an enlarged scale, through part of the base plate and Intermediate plate of the bearing assembly.
The hinge 1 shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a first hinge part 2 for securing to a fixed frame 3 of a door or window by self-tapping screws (not shown) received in countersunk holes 4 at opposed ends and a second hinge part 5 for securing to a movable member 6 of a door or window by an adjustable bearing assembly 7.
In this embodiment, the fixed frame 3 and movable member 6 are assembled from hollow extrusions of plastics material such as PVC-U but this is not essential and other materials such as metal or wood may' be used.
Usually, two or more hinges 1 are provided at spaced apart locations for pivotal movement of the movable member 6 relative to the fixed frame 3 about a vertical axis where the movable member 6 is a door or about vertical or horizontal axes where the movable member 6 is a window.
The first hinge part 2 has a raised boss 8 that is received between a pair of axially spaced lugs 9 projecting from a side edge 10 of the second hinge part 5 so as to overlie and conceal the fixing screws of the first hinge part 2. The first and second hinge parts 2,5 are zinc diecastings but this is not essential and other metals, alloys or plastics may be used.
The boss 8 has an axial bore 11 of octagonal cross-section at each end for receiving and positively locating a tubular plastics bush 12 of complementary octagonal cross-section In any selected one ofa a plurality of angular positions.
Each bush 12 has an eccentric cylindrical bore 13 and an end flange 14 with a pip 15 for indicating the angular position of the bush 12 in the bore 11. In this way, the bushes 12 can be assembled with the eccentric bores 13 axially aligned and changing the angular position of the bushes 12 displaces the aligned bores 13 transversely with respect to the hinge axis.
The lugs 9 have axially aligned cylindrical bores 17 that are aligned with the axially aligned eccentric bores 13 formed in the bushes 12 for reception of a metal hinge pin 16 to pivotally connect the hinge parts 2,5 with the end flanges 14 of the bushes 12 separating the boss 8 and lugs 9 of the hinge parts 2,5 to prevent metal-to-metal contact for a smooth hinging action.
The hinge pin 16 is releasably secured by engaging a grub screw 18 mounted in a threaded transverse bore (not shown) in one of the lugs 9 with a circular groove 19 formed adjacent to one end of the hinge pin 16.
The grub screw 18 is accessible when the closure member 6 is open for removal of the hinge pin 16 and the transverse bore is arranged to face towards the first hinge part 2 when the closure member 6 is closed so that the grub screw 18 is hidden preventing access for removal of the hinge pin 16.
The hinge parts 2,5 are relatively adjustable in a direction transverse to the hinge axis by removing the hinge pin 16 to separate the hinge parts 2,5 and adjusting the angular position of the bushes 12 to displace the aligned eccentric bores 13.
The adjustable bearing assembly 7 for mounting the second hinge part 5 on the movable member 6 comprises a base plate 20 of T-shape, an intermediate plate 21 of generally H-shape, and a fixing plate 22 of T-shape.
The fixing plate 22 has three countersunk holes 23 by means of which the assembly 7 is secured to the movable member 6 by selftapping screws 24 extending through oversize holes 25 and 26 In the base plate 20 and intermediate plate 21 respectively.
The base plate 20 has two locating pegs (not shown) on the rear face that are received In complementary holes 27 trilled In the front face 6a of the movable member 6 to locate the base plate 20 square with the edge 6b of the movable member 6 and prevent the base plate 20 twisting under load.
The front face 20a of the base plate 20 and the opposed rear face 21a of the Intermediate plate 21 are each formed with a plurality of identical projections 28 of pyramid shape having a uniform pitch of lmm that are separated by Identical recesses 29 of pyramid shape.
The base plate 20 is a plastics moulding and the Intermediate plate 21 a metal casting but this is not essential and both plates 20,21 may be made of plastics or metal.
The projections 28 of each plate 20,21 are engageable in the recesses 29 of the other plate 20,21 to lock the plates 20,21 relative to each other on securing the fixing plate 22 to the movable member 6 so as to clamp the intermediate plate 21 in a set position.
The bearing assembly 7 is adjustable to alter the set position of the intermediate plate 21 by releasing the screws 24 to disengage the projections 28 from the recesses 29 allowing the intermediate plate 20 to slide over the base plate 21 parallel to and/or transuerse to the hinge axis.
One leg 30 of the intermediate plate 21 is shorter than the other leg 31 and is formed with upper and lower parallel wedge faces 32 of dovetail shape extending normal to the hinge axis.
The second hinge part 5 has a flat rectangular body 33 formed on the underside with a recess 34 for receiving and concealing the bearing assembly 7.
The recess 34 has opposed lands 35 formed with parallel wedge faces 36 that extend from the side edge 10 of the body 33 between the lugs 9 and are complementary to the wedge faces 32 on the intermediate plate 21.
The second hinge part 5 Is located on the bearing assembly 7 by positioning the lands 35 between the legs 30,31 of the intermediate plate and sliding sideways to engage the complementary wedge faces 32,36.
Each land 35 has a threaded bore 37 extending parallel to the associated wedge face 36 for receivingXa grub screw 38 that Is engageable with the side edge 31a of the aligned longer leg 31 of the intermediate plate 21 to prevent the second hinge part 5 being slid sideways to disengage the wedge faces 32,36 until the grub screws 38 have been withdrawn.
By this arrangement, the second hinge part 5 Is releasably secured to the bearing assembly 7 and can be detached therefrom for adjusting the intermediate plate 21 relative to the base plate 20.
To assemble the hinge 1 for mounting the movable member 6 on the fixed frame 3, the bearing assembly 7 is secured to the movable member 6 so as to clamp the intermediate plate 21 relative to the base plate 20, and the first hinge part 2 Is secured to the fixed frame 3 with the eccentric bores 13 of the bushes 12 axially aligned.
The second hinge part 5 is secured to the bearing assembly 7 and the hinge parts 2,5 pivotally connected by inserting the hinge pin 16 through the aligned bores 13,17 of the bushes 12 and lugs 9 and engaging the grub screw 18 in the groove 19 to secure axially the hinge pin 16. The ends of the bores 17 in the lugs 9 are closed by removable plastics closure caps 39.
If the movable member 6 is out of square with respect to the fixed frame 3, the hinge parts 2,5 are separated and the second hinge part 5 removed from the bearing assembly 7. The screws 24 securing the fixing plate 22 are then released to free the intermediate plate 21 for movement relative to the base plate 20 in directions parallel to and/or transverse to the hinge axis to correct for the out of squareness and the intermediate plate 21 clamped In the adjusted position by tightening the screws 24 to secure the fixing plate 22.
The hinge 1 is then re-assembled to re-mount the movable member 6 on the fixed frame 3. In this way, the movable member 6 can be adjusted horizontally and/or vertically (X and Y directions in Figure 1) until it Is square In the fixed frame 3.
In addition, if the movable member 6 does not close properly against the fixed frame 3 or, where provided, a weatherstrip(s), the hinge parts 2,5 are separated and the angular position of the bushes 12 In the ends of the axial bore 11 of the boss 8 adjusted by withdrawing, rotating and re-inserting the bushes 12 In a new position with the eccentric bores 13 displaced transversely of the hinge axis.
The hinge 1 Is then re-assembled to re-mount the movable member 6 on the fixed frame 3. In this way, the movable member 6 can.be adjusted towards or away from the fixed frame 3 (Z direction In Figure 1) to obtain a close fit or, where provided, control compression of the weatherstrip(s).
It will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to the embodiment above-described. In particular, the eccentric bushes and bearing assembly may be provided in combination or separately.
The bushes may be mounted in complementary bores formed in the lugs of the second hinge part.
The bushes may be of any other suitable cross-section, for example hexagonal, for mounting in a complementary bore to allow the position of the eccentric bore to be adjusted and prevent rotation of the bush in the bore.
The second hinge part and bearing assembly may have any suitable co-operating formations for detachably mounting the second hinge part.
The base plate and intermediate plate may have any suitable interengageable formations for adjusting the position of the intermediate plate.
The bearing assembly and associated hinge part may be mounted on the movable member as described or the fixed frame.
