Abstract
A simple device for slicing of bread in the home has been described. The appliance reliably reproduces vertically cut slices that may be thin medium or thick. The device consists of a base Fig.1 on which are a series of grooves 5, 1cm apart on either side of the groove free area 7, for the slotting in of pairs of digitate panels Fig.2. The panels secure the bread loaf in place and at the same time the pairs of opposing digits and gaps 9 between the digits act as determinents of the thickness of the slices and as guides for the knife blade during cutting, respectively. The apliance is adaptable for slicing of loaves of different thicknesses.
Description
UliISORE: BREAD SLICER TECSwICAL FIELD
This invention refers to a device for the slicing of bread uniform.
BACKGROUT:D Despite the ready availability of sliced bread in the shops there is a pressing need for a simple device ir the home to obtain good quality slices of bread frog an uncut loaf. The available industrial slicing machines are unsuitable for the home use. At present the slicing of bread in the home is dependent on one's manual skill and judgement. It is common experience that manual slicing without the aid of a suitable device leads to the frustrating experience of the slices that are differing in sizes and shapes and are rarely vertically cut. There is therefore a clear need for a simple device in the kitchen for easy and reliable slicing. of bread ith a quality that is comparable with the sliced bread available in the shops.
DESCRIPTTOtw The present invention is a simple device for the slicirg of bread reliably reproducing vertically cut slices that are thin, medium or thick as desired. The appliance consists of a base Fig. 1, the size of a bread cutting board and a pair of digitate panels Fig.2. On the upper surface of the base Fig.1 are a series of grooves 1cm apart, of approximately the same width as the lower edge of the digitate panels so that when assembled together as in Fig.3, the two fits squarely. Also the elevated area in the grooves 6, fits into the recess 11 in the panels Fig.2. This simultaneously alligns the pair of panels so that the opposing digits 10 and the gaps , face each other directly. When the loaf of bread is placed on the rr.iddle of the board 7, Fig.1, depending on it's width two grooves 5 have to be selected and the two digitate panels Fig.? slotted in as closely as possible to the loaf to secure it in place. The bread is now ready for slicing along the guide gaps 9. The tops of the guide gaps 9, widen into a V shape to facilitate the introduction of the knife during cutting.
o obtain medium thickness slices a separate set of panels with wider digits need to be used. !;however, thick slices could be obtained by slicing bread at twice the thickness of the thin ones using the same digitate panels as for thin slicing.
DESCP.IPTIOr; FIG. 1 Shows the view of the base board of the
bread slicer with the arrangement of the
grooves for the digitate panels.
FIG. 2 Shows the side view of a digitate panel.
FIG. 3 Shows the appearance of the base with the
digitate panels assembled.
FIG. 4 This shows the cross sectional view of the
arrangement in Fig. 3.
Claims (16)
- Claim 1. A device for slicing of bread producing slices that are vertically cut, even in th thickness and with adaptability for cutting at thin, medium or thick levels of slice thickness.Claim 2. The device is adaptable for slicing of loaves of differing diamentions.Claim 3. The device can be conveniently stored away after removal of the pannels Fig.9.Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS: 1. A device for slicing bread comprising a bread board for receiving a loaf of bread thereon and one or more multi-slotted inserts adapted to be removably located in or on said board.
- 2. A device as claimed in claim 1, wherein said board comprises a plurality of longitudinal grooves formed in the upper surface thereof.
- 3. A device as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein such insert comprises a digitate panel having a plurality of open-ended slots for receiving a knife or the like, in use.
- 4. A device as claimed in claim 2 or claim 3, wherein each such insert is adapted to be located in one or more of said grooves.
- 5. A device as claimed in claim 4, wherein means is provided to inhibit relative movement of such insert along said groove when located therein.
- 6. A device as claimed in claim 5, wherein said means comprises a recess on said insert adapted to engage a corresponding projection formed in said groove.
- 7. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein one or more of said slots has a substantially V-shape open end.
- 8. A device as claimed in claim 2 or any succeeding claim, wherein one or more such grooves is provided along opposing sides of said surface.
- 9. A device as claimed in claim 8, wherein one such insert is located in one such groove on each opposing side of said surface so that, in use, a loaf of bread may be substantially securely received between said inserts.
- 10. A device as claimed in claim 2 or any succeeding claim, wherein the grooves are spaced apart transversely of the bread board.
- 11. A device as claimed in claim 2 or any succeeding claim, wherein in use a loaf having a given width may be substantially securely received between two such inserts by location of said inserts in appropriately selected grooves.
- 12. A device as claimed in claim 11, having a plurality of grooves to accommodate loaves of different widths.
- 13. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein in use, such inserts are substantially upstanding from said board.
- 14. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein such inserts are elongate and are adapted to extend, in use, substantially along the length of a loaf.
- 15. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the inserts are provided in pairs, each insert having a series of digits, the width of the digits in each pair being different.
- 16. A device as substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
