Abstract
231,045. Foot, E. H. W. Dec. 29, 1923. Rotary-tool cultivators; tools.-The tines of a rotary cultivator each consist of a rigid curved member having a long conical point succeeded by a cutting-part of profressively increasing depth and substantially wedge-shaped cross-section, the shanks of the tines being narrower than the blade portion and being connected to brackets on the driving-shaft by bolts which are sheared when an abnormal resistance is encountered, and means being provided for preventing the released tine from being projected from the machine. The brackets 2, Fig. 1, are each made in two parts bolted together and fastened to the hollow shaft 1 by screws 5. The tines 6 are inserted in slots in lugs 7<1> and mounted on pivot bolts 8, extensions of the tines being connected to the brackets bv safety bolts 10. When a bolt 10 is sheared the corresponding tine 6 comes into contact with a shoulder 14 and the pivot bolt 8 may also be sheared. The tine is prevented from flying off by a rope or wire 12 passed through holes in the tine and bracket. The points 15 of the tines are conical and the cutting-parts 15<1> are adapted to throw the excavated clods to either side, being wedge-shaped in section with the angle of the wedge becoming progressively more obtuse on either side of the section 3-3. In a modification, the engaging surfaces of the shaft and brackets 16, Fig. 4, are grooved to prevent rotation, and the inner ends of the tines 19 are concentric with the brackets, leaf springs 24 being inserted between them to cause vibration of the tines when the bolts 21 are sheared. The faces of the cutting-part 28 of the tines are concave and act as shovels. The path of the end of the cutting-edge is approximately cycloidal and the curvature increases towards the root of the tine.
