Description

June 6, 1933. DUFFEY 1,912,477
SELECTIVE POINT CULTIVATOR SHOVEL Filed Oct. 14, 1952" Ennentor E.E.Duffey attorney Patented June 6, 1933 UlllTlill? STATES EAR-L E. DUFFEY, OF GALLATIN, MISSOURI SELECTIVE PGINT 'CULTIVATOR SHOVEL Application filed Getober 14,
This invention relates broadly to the art of husbandry, and more particularly to cultivators and selective point cultivator shovels.
It is an object of the invention to provide a cultivator shovel having a removable share, the latter being provided with a plurality of share points. whereby upon the cutting edges of a point becoming unduly worn, dull or broken another perfect and sharp point carried by the share of the shovel may be readily substituted therefor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device as abovedescribed which is of few and simple parts whereby a worn or broken share may be interchanged for a perfat one at all times and more particularly when a cultivator is operating in the field and without the necessity of obtaining repairs at a blacksmith shop or the like.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby a broken or worn cultivator shovel may be replaced without the necessity and incident expense of replacing the integral landslide and share of the shovel as heretofore practiced in the art.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following detailed description thereof, refer-- ence being had to the accompanying drawing. in which:
Figure l is an elevational View of the back of the new device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view thereof taken substantially along the dotted line 22 of Figure 1 and showing the shovel in an in clined normal operating position.
Figure 3 is an elevational view of the front of the new shovel. and
Figure 4 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, indicates an arm which is usually carried by a transversely positioned beam of a cultivator when the new device is employed with a sulky or riding cultivator, the latter not being shown. The arm 10 is usually formed of tubular pipes or the like and it will be understood that the later described device is adjustable longitudi- O nally of the arm and may be clamped thereto in a selected raised or lowered position for 1932. Serial No. 637,798.
governing the depth of the furrow or scarification imparted to the soil by means of the later described shovel.
The new invention may include a clamp for attacl ng the device to the arm 10, the said clamp having an elongated body portion 11 provided with a pair of ears 12 extending therefrom which are adapted to substantially encircle the arm 10 and to rigidly and ad-- justably grip the arm when a nut 13 carried by a bolt 14 is tightened. As best shown in Figure 1, the bolt 14 extends through the ears for drawing them toward each other at desired times and a washer 15 may be employed.
A landslide 16 having asmooth outward surface disposed opposite to the arm 10 is pr0- vided and may be secured to the body portion 11 of the clamp by means of counter-sunk rivets'17 or the like, or the landslide may be formed integral with the clamp as may be desired.
The landslide is of lesser length than the elongated body portion 11 0f the clamp and provided at its lowermost portion with a beveled edge 18 for purposes later described.
A share 19 is removably secured adjacent to the lowermost body portion of the clamp by means of a bolt 20 which extends through said body portion of the clamp and the share; the bolt, as best shown in Figure 2, having a counter-sunk head which is in alignment with the smooth surface of the share and provided with a nut 21 whereby the share may be secured to the clamp. The share is provided with a plurality of share points 22 and beveled edges 23 mid-way between said points.
A selected beveled edge 23 is adapted to memberwith the beveled edge 18 of the landslide for preventing revoluble movements of the share on the bolt 20 at times when the former is secured in the position shown in Figure 2. l
Also the bolt 20 may be provided with an angular shank portion 20 which is adapted to member with similarly shaped formed through the shareand clamp whereby the bolt is adapted to prevent turning movements of the share with'respect to the clamp recesses although for certain classes of work wherein and without the assistance of the beveled edge 18 and a beveled edge 23 membering together and in such case the beveled edges 23 of the share have no function except to provide sharp '1 cutting edges adjacent the points 22.
The front or face 24 of the share 19 is smooth and slightly concaved in contour and the medial portion thereof is normally in alignment with the smooth face ofrthe landslide at all times when the parts are assembled as shown in Figure 2.
Preferably 3 share points are employed a more acutely shaped point is desired two of i the latter may be employed, and for certain other types of work four or five share points 5 7} may be provided in lieu of the three illus- It is well-known that the points of cultitrated in the concrete and specific embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing.
vator shovels become worn in use and frequently parts thereof become broken away by contact with rocks, roots and the like.
In practice should a share point 22 become broken or the beveled cutting edge 23 thereof become unduly worn, the operator may replace the same readily and at any time by loosening the nut 21 to an extent suflicient for rotating the share on the bolt 20 or rotating the bolt and share to a position whereby a selected point of the share is adapted to be placed in engagementwith the soil and tightening the nut 21 and causing a beveled edge 23' thus selected to member with the opposed adjacent beveled edge 18 of the landslide for preventing rotary movements of the share upon the bolt 20 as a pivotal point in instances where a conventional bolt is employed.
m It is obvious that by means of the present arrangement of a two piece cultivator shovel wherein the landslide and share are separable that an integral landslide and share need not be purchased when it is desired to replace a defective member as heretofore practiced in the art, also it will be apparent that for certain types of manually operated cultivators that an interchangeable share point is provided by means of the present construc tion wherein a landslide may be omitted.
principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish it to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as claimed.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a cultivator, the combination of a shovel arm, a clamp adjustably mounted on the arm, a landslide secured across the forward face of the clamp and having an inwardly and downwardly beveled lower edge spaced above the lower end of said clamp, a share having a non-circular axial opening and adapted to fit against the lower projecting portion of the clamp, said share having a plurality of points with beveled edges extend ing between the points, said beveled edges extending rearwardly and inwardly and adapted to selectively overlap the lower beveled edge of the landslide to seal the space between the landslide and the share, said projecting lower end of the clamp having a non-circular opening therethrough, and an axial bolt having a non-circular shank ext l' tl' ltl d' l f Lent m nou 1 1e concspon mg y oimed openings in the share and the clamp for bind ing the share on the latter and against the lower edge of the landslide.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature.
EARL E. DUFFEY.
