Abstract
Wallpaper made, through a production method, from non-woven fabrics as a base material sheet having a side, to which side a resinous binder is applied and subsequently onto which side a design pattern is printed by a transfer printing technique. The binder is preferably a water-based acrylic.
Description
WALLPAPER AND ITS PRODUCTION METHOD
The present invention relates to wallpaper and its method of production.
Non-woven fabrics are generally known per se, being a kind of sheet material which is formed from a random arrangement or web of natural or synthetic fibres interlocked and packed, by means of for example needling techniques, to a suitable density. The surface of such a non-woven fabric sheet is normally coarse and loose. Printing on such material has always been unsatisfactory, particularly in terms of the reproduction of printing colour and sharpness.
For these reasons, among others, non-woven fabric material has not been in use for the production of high quality printed articles, such as wallpaper.
The invention seeks to mitigate or to at least alleviate the problem by providing a new type of wallpaper through a novel production method.
According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided wallpaper made from non-woven fabrics as a base material sheet having a side, to which side a resinous binder is applied and subsequently onto which side a design pattern is printed by a transfer printing technique.
Preferably, the resinous binder is applied by spraying.
It is preferred that the resinous binder is a water-based acrylic material.
More preferably, the resinous binder is sustainable within a temperature range of -30 C to 2500C.
In a preferred embodiment, the transfer printing is effected at a temperature in the range of 210 C to 220"C and a pressure exceeding 5,000kg/cm2.
More preferably, the temperature and pressure are applied for a duration of 3 to 4 seconds.
It is preferred that the wallpaper has a thickness of 0.3mm to 0.5mm.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of producing wallpaper, which method comprises providing a base sheet of non-woven fabric material, applying a resinous binder to a side of the base sheet, and subsequently printing a design pattern onto the side of the base sheet by a transfer printing technique.
Preferably, the base sheet is formed by a needle punching technique from a random arrangement or web of fibres.
It is preferred that the resinous binder is applied by spraying.
Preferably, the application of the resinous binder reduces the thickness of the base sheet from 0.8-1.0mm to 0.30.5mm.
In a preferred embodiment, the transfer printing is effected at a temperature in the range of 210 C to 220"C and a pressure exceeding 5,000kg/cm2.
More preferably, the temperature and pressure are applied for a duration of 3 to 4 seconds.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to an embodiment of wallpaper produced in accordance with a method embodying the invention. The wallpaper is made from a sheet of nonwoven fabric material as a base sheet which has a thickness of 0.8-1.0mm and is produced through conventional needle punching techniques using 100% polyester fibres. A resinous binder is then applied to one side of the base sheet by means of a spraying process to improve the physical properties of the surface. The binder is a waterbased acrylic material, which upon dehydration forms a substantially transparent film on and impregnated into the surface of the base sheet. The binder is chosen to be one which, upon setting or curing, can sustain a high temperature of 250 C, without carbonizing, and a low temperature of -30 C, without cracking. The application of the binder reduces the thickness of the base sheet from originally 0.8-1.0mm to about 0.3-0.5mm, with an improved tensile strength greater than 10kg (per unit width). The bound surface of the base sheet is set or reinforced to have reduced fibre-loss, improved (smoother) hand-feel and reduced electro-static charge retaining capacity. More importantly, the treated surface now becomes more suitable for printing.
The subsequent printing step is effected by means of a transfer printing technique. The printing paper to be used bears a layer of transfer ink of a particular design pattern (in colour), which is placed against the bound surface of the base sheet. The overlapped base sheet and printing paper are then drawn in tandem through a pair of pressure rollers which are heated to a temperature of 210 C to 220"C and exert a pressure exceeding 5,000kg/cm2. The base sheet and the printing paper travel at such a speed that the application of said temperature and pressure lasts for about 3-4 seconds. The design pattern is transferred onto the bound surface of the base sheet to form the wallpaper.
As a result of the aforesaid processing steps, the wallpaper has a reduced thickness of about 0.3-0.5mm and the design pattern transferred thereto is of true colour and long-lasting.
The use of non-woven fabric material for producing wallpaper to replace the conventional wood-based material offers many advantages. For example, non-woven fabric material is resistant to moisture and will not easily shrink or crack, particularly at low temperature. Also, non-woven fabric material is inherently sound-absorbent, which makes it an ideal material for wallpaper especially for homes.
The invention has been given by way of example only, and various modifications of and/or alterations to the described embodiment may be made by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as specified in the appended claims.
