Abstract
In order to provide a simple, safe and compact apparatus for distinguishing natural colourless or near-colourless diamond from synthetic diamond, an apparatus has a chamber (2) in which a flash lamp (4) irradiates a stationary diamond (7) with irradiation which has a substantial component of ultraviolet light below 250 nm or 225 nm. The intensity of phosphorescence emitted by the diamond (7) after irradiation by the lamp (4) is measured by a photomultiplier tube (9), which gives a signal to a microprocessor. There is a visual display (13) of the elapsed time for the phosphorescence intensity to decrease to a threshold value. The diamond (7) is classified as probably natural if it has no phosphorescence, or a short phosphorescence time.
