Abstract
A press tool comprises a liner intended to contact and shape sheet material during pressing and a support means for supporting the liner. The liner is preferably readily replaceable and may comprise a sheet of plastics material such as polystyrene.
Description
PRESS TOOL
This invention relates to a press tool particularly but not exclusively for shaping metal foil, such as textured stainless steel foil.
Previously known press tools have been manufactured from solid metal by casting and/or machining. Alternatively the tools have been manufactured from non-metallic resins or similar material. However such previously known press tools are slow and expensive to manufacture and modify and if nonmetallic tend to wear too quickly in use during the pressing process. The relatively large weight of such tools is also a disadvantage and if the tool material is not metallic but needs to be cured it is also difficult to predict material shrinkage during curing.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a press tool which substantially overcomes or alleviates the above disadvantages.
In accordance with the invention a press tool comprises a liner having a surface which is intended to contact and shape sheet material during pressing and a support means for supporting said liner.
Preferably the liner is easily and inexpensively manufactured, for example by vacuum forming, comprises a material which will not wear rapidly e.g a sheet of polystyrene, or other plastics material and has a relatively low coefficient of friction of its shaping surface which allows the material to be pressed e.g. metal foil to slide readily over it during pressing. For example when the liner comprises polystyrene and the metal foil is stainless steel the coefficient of friction is no greater than 0.45. Preferably also the liner is readily replaceable.
Preferably the support means comprises a filler material contained within an outer casing. The material is preferably sufficiently strong to resist the forces applied during pressing. Preferably the filler is chemically compatible with the liner material, does not generate heat during a curing process and can be repaired or replaced readily if required. Preferably also the material has a relatively low density and is inexpensive. Examples of suitable materials are epoxy resins reinforced with sand or metal particles.
The outer casing retains the filler material during fabrication of the tool and provides a suitable robust outer surface which can be utilised for mounting the tool in a press.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing (Figure 1) showing a perspective view of a male tool and a female tool, part of the female tool being broken away.
As shown in Figure 1 a male tool (2) for fitment to the upper platen of a press (not shown) is positioned directly above a female tool (3) for fitment to the lower platen of the press (not shown). A sheet of textured stainless steel foil (not shown) typically 0.004" (0.1 mm) thick may be inserted generally horizontally between the two tools (2 and 3) so that when the press is closed the two tools (2 and 3) shape the foil as required.
Each tool (2 and 3) has substantially the same structure apart from the shaping surface, the shape of one surface being complementary to that of the other. Each comprises a liner of sheet plastics material such as polystyrene which has a shape formed by vacuum forming suitable for shaping the stainless steel foil. This liner (4) is backed by a filler (5) of epoxy resin reinforced with sand or metal particles contained in a strong outer casing (6).
In this embodiment the casing is a generally rectangular box of 9 ply plywood. The casing is secured to the respective upper or lower press platen.
The liner (4) has a high wear resistance and a large number of sheets of stainless steel may be pressed before any significant wear occurs. When the wear is significant then the liner (4) is replaced by a new liner but the original casing and filler material is retained. The liner (4) has a low coefficient of friction, no greater than 0.45 enabling the stainless steel (or other material) sheet to be easily slid into position between the two tools (2 and 3) prior to pressing.
