Abstract
A decorative pelmet having at least one swag 40 and a pair of opposing tails 12 is made by attaching to the centre of a support 21 the centre point of the longer of the two parallel sides (the "top edge") of a trapezium-shaped scarf piece, attaching the scarf piece to the support at two points either side of and equidistant from the centre of the support, thereby forming the swag, the top edge of the scarf piece between the two points being substantially taught, and allowing the remaining scarf ends to hang vertically to form a pair of opposing tails.
Description
PELMET
The present invention concerns a method for making a pelmet and pelmets made according to the method.
Pelmets are widely used in homes to hide curtain and door fittings.
However, they can be difficult to manufacture and install, particularly if they comprise swags and tails, the two halves of the pelmet having to mirror one another.
According to the present invention there is provided a simple, convenient and inexpensive method for making a decorative pelmet having at least one swag and a pair of opposing tails comprising attaching to the centre of a support the centre point of the longer of the two parallel sides (the "top edge") of a trapezium-shaped scarf piece, attaching the scarf piece to the support at two points either side of and equidistant from the centre ofthe support, thereby forming a swag, the top edge ofthe scarf piece between the two points being substantially taught, and allowing the remaining scarf piece to hang vertically or substantially vertically from the two points, forming a pair of opposing tails.
The centre point of the top edge of the scarf piece may be fixedly attached to the centre of the support.
The support may comprise a rail. The rail may be a valance rail.
The centre point of the top edge of the scarf piece may be attached to the rail by a hook. The hook may be a curtain hook.
The scarf piece may have two sides of equal length.
The scarf piece may be attached to the two points on the support by means of surrounding loops.
The two points may be about 10 cm from the ends of the support.
The top edge ofthe scarf piece may additionally be attached to the support between the two points. It may be attached by means of curtain hooks, the support comprising a valance rail. Hence the top edge of the scarf piece between the two points may be easily kept taught.
Hence a pelmet having at least one swag and a pair of opposing tails between and depending from the two points may be readily made. The method is simple and results in a correctly-proportioned pelmet. The extent of the draping of the swag or swags and the tails may be readily altered by altering the amount of the bottom edge of the scarf piece between the two points - the more of the bottom edge of the scarf piece that is between the two points, the greater the draping, and vice-versa.
Additional swags may be added by attaching the scarf piece to the support between the two points. There may, for example, be two or three or more swags between the two points. The swags may be of a similar size.
The scarf piece may be attached to the support by surrounding loops.
An additional swag may be added by attaching the centre point ofthe scarf piece to the centre of the support by means of a surrounding loop.
The centre point of the support may be marked.
The centre of the top edge of the scarf piece may be marked.
Also provided according to the present invention are pelmets made according to the method of the present invention.
Also provided according to the present invention are apparatus for making a pelmet having at least one swag and a pair of opposing tails, comprising a trapeziumshaped scarf piece, the centre point of the top edge being marked.
The scarf piece may have two sides of equal length
The apparatus may also comprise a valance rail, the centre of which is marked.
The apparatus may also comprise at least two supporting loops.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description, with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example only, two forms of pelmet and method of making same.
Of the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a scarf piece according to the present invention;
Figure 2 shows a valance rail according to the present invention;
Figure 3 shows a pelmet having one swag according to the present
invention; and
Figure 4 shows a pelmet having two swags according to the present
invention.
From the drawings it will be seen that the centre point 10 (which is marked thereon) ofthe longer ofthe two parallel sides 11 (the "top edge") of a trapezium shaped scarf piece 12 is fixedly attached by means of a curtain hook (not shown) to the centre 20 (also marked thereon) of a support 21, comprising a valance rail, the scarf piece 12 being attached to the support 21 at two points 31, 32 either side of and equidistant from the centre 20 of the support 21, thereby forming a swag 40, the top edge 11 of the scarf piece 12 between the two points 31, 32 being substantially taught, and the remaining scarf piece 12 being allowed to hang vertically or substantially vertically from the two points 31,32, forming a pair of opposing tails 41,42.
The scarf piece 12 has two sides 13, 14 of equal length. The scarf piece 12 is attached to the two points 31, 32 on the valance rail 21 by means of surrounding loops 33, 34.
The two points 31,32 are about 10 cm from the ends ofthe valance rail 21.
The top edge 11 ofthe scarf piece 12 is additionally attached to the valance rail 21 between the two points 31,32 by means of curtain hooks (not shown).
In the arrangement of Figure 4, two swags 51,52 of similar size are formed
by attaching, additionally, the centre point 15 of the lower edge 16 of the scarf piece 12
at the centre 20 of the support 21 by means of a surrounding loop 60.
