Description

TITLE: LINKAGE ASSEMBLY FOR ACTUATING A PAIR OF BRAKE UNITS MOUNTED ON A FOLDABLE TROLLEY The invention relates to a linkage assembly, more particularly to a linkage assembly which is used for actuating a pair of brake units that are mounted on a foldable trolley.
Figures 1 and 2 show a foldable trolley (1) provided with a conventional linkage assembly (2) which is used for actuating a pair of brake units so as to prevent rotation of a pair of wheels (14), which are journalled between two mounting seats (13) fixed at the bottom end portion of the trolley. As illustrated, the conventional linkage assembly (2) includes a pair of brake actuators (21) mounted rotatably to the mounting seats (13) by the use of pivots (20) and connected operably to the brake units of the trolley, and a linkage (22) constituted by a plurality of tubular links (221, 222, 223) which are connected telescopically to one another. The links (221) are respectively and integrally connected with the brake actuators (21) in such a manner that when the linkage (22) is depressed, the pivots (211) of the actuators (21) engage within the engaging slots (141) of the wheels (14), thereby keeping the trolley in a locking position. During the folding of the trolley, the tubular links (221, 222, 223) retract within one another in order to facilitate storage of the trolley.
When the trolley (1) is at the locking position, the linkage (22) of the linkage assembly (2) extends rearwardly and outwardly from the wheels (14), as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 2, thereby locating the linkage (22) in a position where the latter may be accidentally stepped by the person pushing the trolley, thus causing bending of the links (221, 222, 223) and resulting in unfoldable condition of the trolley.
The main object of the present invention is to provide a linkage assembly for a foldable trolley which is used for actuating a pair of brake units of the trolley and which is free from the aforementioned drawback that is generally associated with the conventional linkage assembly.
Accordingly, the linkage assembly of the present invention for actuating a pair of brake units of a foldable trolley includes a pair of elongated vertical plates, a pair of link plates, and a pair of brake actuators. The vertical plates are disposed between a pair of wheels of the trolley and have top portions mounted respectively and rotatably on the lower end portions of the rear legs of the trolley in such a manner that the vertical plates are respectively mounted on the rear legs at positions that are higher than the axes of the wheels, and bottom portions formed with pivot holes. The link plates are pivoted together at the inner end portions thereof, and are respectively pivoted to the top portions of the vertical plates at the outer end portions. The brake actuators are connected operably to the brake units and pivoted to the lower end portions of the rear legs. Each of the actuators has a fixed pivot which extends through the pivot hole of the corresponding vertical plate so that each of the actuators can rotate relative to the corresponding rear leg between a locking position, wherein the corresponding wheel is prevented from rotation, and an unlocking position, wherein the corresponding wheel can rotate.
When one of the actuators is paddled downward so as to keep the corresponding wheel at the locking position, the link plates rotate relative to the rear legs and correspondingly move the other one of the actuator to the locking position.
Since the link plates of the linkage assembly of the present invention do not protrude outwardly and rearwardly from the trolley, the possibility of their being stepped over by the user is eliminated so as to minimize the risk of damage to the trolley equipped with the linkage assembly of the present invention.
When it is desired to brake the wheels, the user only needs to step on either of the brake actuators, thereby achieving the total braking action of the wheels.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a foldable trolley equipped with a conventional linkage assembly for actuating a pair of brake units mounted on the trolley; Figure 2 illustrates how the conventional linkage assembly is actuated so as to brake the wheels of the trolley; Figure 3 shows a foldable trolley equipped with a linkage assembly of the present invention; Figure 4 illustrates how the linkage assembly of the present invention is actuated so as to brake the wheels of the trolley; Figure 5 shows a schematic rear side view of the foldable trolley equipped with the linkage assembly of the present invention;; Figure 6 illustrates how the foldable trolley equipped with the linkage assembly of the present invention is folded for storage; and Figure 7 shows a foldable trolley equipped with a modified linkage assembly of the present invention.
Referring to Figures 3 and 4, a foldable trolley (4) is shown to be equipped with a linkage assembly (3) of the present invention for actuating a pair of brake units of the trolley (4). As illustrated, the trolley (4) includes a foldable frame (40) with two rear legs (41). The linkage assembly (3) includes a pair of brake actuators (31), a pair of elongated vertical plates (33), and a pair of link plates (34).
Each of the vertical plates (33) is disposed between a pair of wheels (44) rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft (45) of the trolley (4) and has a top portion (331) mounted rotatably on a portion (42) of a respective one of the rear legs (41) which is located higher than the axes of the wheels (44), and a bottom portion formed with a pivot hole. The top portion (331) of each of the vertical plates (33) is provided with a pair of lugs (35). The link plates (34) have two inner end portions pivoted together by a rivet (36), and two outer end portions respectively pivoted to the lugs (35) of the vertical plates (33).
The brake actuators (31) are connected operably to the brake units of the trolley (4). Each of the actuators (31) includes a lower end portion pivoted to a portion (43) of the rear leg (41) by means of a rivet (32), and a fixed pivot (312) formed integrally on the lower end portion and extending through the pivot hole of the respective vertical plate (33).
Thus, each of the actuators (31) can rotate relative to the corresponding rear leg (41) between a locking position shown in Fig. 4, wherein the corresponding wheel (44) is prevented from rotation, and an unlocking position, wherein the corresponding wheel (44) can rotate.
When it is desired to stop the rotation of the wheels (44), the upper end portion (311) of one of the actuators (31) can be paddled downward, thereby moving the fixed pivot (312) of the actuator (31) into an engaging slot (441) of the wheel (44) so as to keep the corresponding wheel (44) at the locking position.
When one of the actuators (31) is moved to the locking position, the link plates (34) synchronously rotate relative to the rear legs (41) so as to move the other one of the actuators (31) to the locking position.
Note that the link plates (24) of the linkage assembly (2 ) of present invention does not protrude outwardly and rearwardly from the foldable frame (40) when the actuators (31) of the trolley are at the locking position, so that the possibility of their being stepped over by the user is avoided, thus minimizing the risk of damage to the trolley equipped the linkage assembly of the present invention. When it is desired to brake the wheels, the user only needs to step on either of the brake actuators, thereby achieving the total braking action of the wheels.
Referring to Figs. 5 and 6, the present preferred embodiment further includes a connecting strap (37) which interconnects the inner end portion of one of the link plates (34) and the connecting pin (402) of two foldable linking plates (401) in the foldable frame (40) in such a manner that, when a pulling element (403) which is mounted over the connecting pin (402) is pulled upward, the inner end portions of the link plates (34) are pulled toward the foldable linking plates (401) when folding the frame (40) so as to fold the link plates (34) together with the frame (40).
Referring to Fig. 7, a foldable trolley (5) is shown to include two seat portions and is equipped with two modified linkage assemblies (3") of the present invention. The trolley (5) has a foldable frame (50) with two outer rear legs (51) and an inner rear leg (51A) between the outer rear legs (51). Three brake actuators (31") are respectively mounted on the outer and inner rear legs (51, 51A) of the foldable frame (50). The middle actuator (31") is connected to either of the side actuators (31") by two pivotally interconnected link plates (34") and two vertical plates (33") in a manner similar to that of the previous embodiment. The two link plates (33") disposed on the middle wheel (52) are coupled together by a pivot pin (38") so as to rotate synchronously. To stop the rotation of all the wheels (52), the user only needs to paddle the middle actuators (31") so as to achieve total braking action thereof.
