Abstract

A non-woven microfibre cloth is made from polyester fibres and polyurethane fibres and is particularly applicable as a synthetic suede for shoes and for upholstery because of its elastic properties. The cloth may comprise 70-95% polyester fibres and may be made by an islands in a sea technique. A woven elastic backing cloth made from cotton and elastomeric yarn may be laminated to the microfibre by adhesive. The backing cloth may be elastic in the weft direction only.

Description

Non-woven Svnthetic Cloth The present invention is concerned with the provision of a synthetic cloth substitute for suede particularly for use in the manufacture of shoes but having other possible applications, for example as an upholstery material.
Conventionally shoes are often made from suede. In order that off-the-shelf shoes will fit well it is commonly necessary to produce shoes in a range of width fittings this complicates manufacture and adds to the volume of stock which must be held by a retail outlet in order to accommodate all potential customers. This all goes to reduce productivity and increases costs and it is therefore highly desirable to avoid the need for a range of width fittings to be stocked.
A known artificial substitute for natural suede is a non-woven microfibre (NWM) cloth an example of which is sold under the trademark ITOSUEDE. This material is manufactured from microfibres composed of 100% polyester fibres having sizes in the range from 0.0011 dtex* to 1.43dtex* (0.001 to 1.3 denier) according to application. The NWM is made by extruding the polyester polymer into yarn of the desired dimension, these are then drawn into a composite yarn in configuration known as "islands in a sea" where the fibres are encased in a soluble polymer material. This composite yarn is then chopped to a desired length and laid out. The soluble polymer sea is then removed by a chemical solvent leaving only the microfibres which are bonded to form a nonwoven microfibre cloth. To produce the suede like finish the cloth is buffed. The resulting NWM cloth is a very good substitute for natural suede, being similar in appearance, breathable, durable and weather resistant. However, it does not stretch and so shoes made from it must be made in a range of width fittings to fit well.
The object of the present invention is to provide a synthetic cloth which is able to provide a substitute for suede in which the technical problems experienced with the previously known suede substitute cloth are alleviated.
Accordingly the present invention comprises a non-woven synthetic cloth consisting of a portion of polyester microfibres and a portion of polyurethane.
A cloth in accordance with the present invention is able to stretch while retaining the appearance and endurance of the prior art suede substitute. This allows a shoe made from the cloth to accommodate a wider range of foot width sizes in comfort and so alleviates the need for shoes to be made in a range of width sizes.
Preferably the proportion of polyester fibres ranges from 70-95% and of polyurethane 5-30% since this has been found to give a suitable degree of stretch. The proportions of polyester fibre to polyurethane fibre may be varied according to requirements.
The elasticity of the previously described NWM cloth is preferably enhanced by an elastomer fabric backing which is laminated onto the back of the cloth. Preferably the backing cloth is a heat set woven fabric and may be comprised of a material woven from 85-90% cotton fibres and 10-15% elastomer yarns and depends to some degree on the thickness of the NWM fabric. The modulus of elasticity of the backing cloth can be adjusted by heat setting. The laminated cloth is elastic and recovers its shape accurately when deformed.
A laminated cloth as previously described may stretch elastically in either direction in the plane of the cloth. However, this makes the manufacture of articles such as shoes difficult. For example, when the cloth is stretched over the toe of a last to be fastened to the sole it will stretch elastically, when removed from the last this will tend to cause the sole to turn up, particularly where the sole is thin. Accordingly the backing cloth is preferably woven so that it is has different modulus of elasticity in different directions.
Example.
In a preferred example the non-woven microfibre cloth is formed by the known "islands in the sea technique" previously described and comprises a mixture of 95% polyester microfibres and 5% polyurethane. An elastomer fabric backing is made from 92% cotton fibres and 8% elastomer yarns and is woven to be elastic in the weft direction only. The elastomer fabric backing is bonded to the back of the non-woven microfibre cloth by adhesive.
