Abstract

Lifting apparatus comprises a frustoconical lifting member 1 connectable to a hoist and a load bearing member 5 having formed in its surface an open-ended slot 8. The slot has an entry portion 9 through which the hoist can pass and an inner portion is whose margin is circular and whose sides are chamfered to define a taper which complements the taper of the frustoconical surface of the lifting member 1. The diameter of the circular inner portion of the open-ended slot of the load bearing member is less than the greatest diameter of the frustoconical lifting member and more than the smallest such diameter. The lifting member can be 'T' shaped. The slot can be ribbed or corrugated or formed on an insert.

Description

LIFTING APPARATUS This invention relates to lifting apparatus and more especially to lifting apparatus which enables a hoist to be engaged with and disengaged from a lifting frame without operator access.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided lifting apparatus which comprises a lifting member connectable to a hoist and a load bearing member of a lifting frame, the load bearing member including an openended slot formed with a generally circular inner portion whose diameter lies between the smallest and largest dimension of the lifting member.
According to the present invention in another aspect there is provided lifting apparatus which comprises a frustoconical lifting member connectable to a hoist and a load bearing member of a lifting frame, the load bearing member including an open-ended slot formed with a generally circular inner portion whose diameter lies between the smallest and largest diameter of the frustoconical lifting member and whose sides are chamfered to define a frustoconical surface which complements that of the lifting member.
In a further aspect, the present invention provides lifting apparatus comprising a frustoconical lifting member connectable to a hoist and a load bearing member having formed in its surface an open-ended slot having an entry portion through which that part of the hoist to which the lifting member is connected can pass and an inner portion whose margin is generally circular and whose sides are chamfered to define a taper which complements the taper of the frustoconical surface of the lifting member, the diameter of the generally circular inner portion of the open-ended slot of the load bearing member being less than the greatest diameter of the frustoconical lifting member and more than the smallest such diameter.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a sectional view of apparatus in accordaiic With the invention; Figure 2 is a plan view from above of the apparatus illustrated in Figure 1; and Figures 3 and 4 are respectively plan and side views in section of a steel load bearing plate of the apparatus illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
The illustrated apparatus comprises a frustoconical lifting member 1 secured to a spindle 2 of a chain hoist 3 by means of a captivated nut 4. Before securing the lifting member to the hoist, the conventional hanging hook of the hoist is removed and replaced by the spindle, the top connection of the spindle being identical to the hoist hook fitting.
A load bearing member in the form of a plate 5 is secured by spacer columns 6 to a lifting frame (not shown) and includes an open-ended slot 7 having a convergent entry portion 8, a generally parallel side central portion 9 and an inner generally circular portion 10. As will be seen from Figure 4, the sides of the load bearing plate which define the margin of the circular portion 10 of the slot are chamfered to define a frustoconical taper 11 which complements that of the lifting member. The taper 11 may not exactly complement that of the lifting member. Indeed, advantages may accrue by having line contact between the lifting member and the load bearing plate. To this end, the surface of the lifting member or the tape 11 may be ribbed, corrugated or the like. Also the taper 11 may be formed on the inner side surface of a lining insert of the lifting plate, this insert being of the same material as or a material different to that of the lifting plate. Thus, the insert may be of brass, plastics or other suitable material.
The diameter of the circular portion 10 of the slot of the load bearing plate is greater than the smallest diameter of the frustoconical surface of the lifting member and less than the largest such diameter. Thus, as shown in Figure 1, when the lifting member is sited within the circular section of the slot, its frustoconical surface firmly engages the frustoconical surface of the tapered sides 11 of the load bearing plate. The width of the central part 9 is simply sufficient to enable the spindle to pass therethrough and the portion 8 is flared for ease of operation.
The lifting and load bearing members may be produced from any suitable material, conventionally steel. Also, the 'oad bearing member may form part of the member to be lifted, the slot being formed in the member itself.
In use, the hoist is lowered to enable the spindle 2 to enter the slot and is then raised to locate the lifting member firmly within generally circular portion 10 of the slot formed in the load bearing plate. The complementary surfaces of the lifting member 1 and the tapered sides 11 of the slot provide a good connection between the lifting member and the load bearing plate. Once the lifting frame has been moved by the hoist to its required position, the hoist is lowered to release the lifting member from the load bearing plate 5. Thus the hoist can be engaged with and disengaged from the lifting frame without operator access.
In an unillustrated embodiment, the lifting member is generally of inverted "T" configuration, the diameter of the upper part of the member being such as to enable it to pass through the entry portion 8 of the slot 7 and the lower part of the member being of a diameter greater than that of the central portion 9 of the slot whereby its upper surface can engage the adjoining under surface of the load bearing member. In this arrangement, the upper part of the lifting member is preferably tapered for ease of assembly.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of lifting apparatus in accordance with the invention and that modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
