Abstract
The invention relates to forming apparatus for forming a heat deformable material, the apparatus comprising two opposed platens 7, 8, one of which at least is heatable by suitable means, and one of which carries a forming profile 10, the other being substantially planar, and means for moving the platens towards and away from one another so that in one operative position material may be formed. The apparatus 1 can be operated manually, or automatically and can be under numeric control. In the described embodiment a blade 13 is mounted on the upper, heated, platen 12 for severing the processed web 2.
Description
FORMING APPARATUS
The invention relates to forming apparatus.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for forming a heat deformable material, comprising two opposed platens, one of which at least is heatable and one of which at least carries a forming profile, the other being substantially planar, and means for moving the platens towards and away from one another so that in one operative position material therebetween may be formed.
The other platen may comprise a surface layer.
The surface layer may be removable.
The surface layer may comprise a fabric.
The fabric may be metallised, for example with aluminium.
Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows schematically two platens of the apparatus in one operating mode.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown apparatus 1 for forming a heat deformable material 2, such as a sheet of fluted plastic material having two layers 3, 4 connected by walls 5 to provide flutes 6.
It is often desirable to seal the ends of the flutes 6 at an edge of the material 2, to prevent ingress of water, dirt etc. which from a hygiene point of view is often necessary or desirable particularly where the sheet is destined for use in packaging in the food or produce industry.
It is also often necessary to form hinge or fold lines in the sheet 2 so to form panels or flaps so the sheet provides a blank which can be folded about the hinge or fold lines for erection to form a container or box.
The edge sealing, and hinge or fold line formation, can be formed in the material using the apparatus 1, which is shown in an edge sealing mode in the drawing. The apparatus 1 comprises two opposed platens 7, 8, one of which is heatable by suitable means such as electricity 9, one of which at least carries a forming profile or tool 10, the other platen 8 carrying a substantially planar tool 11 and means (not shown) for moving the platens vertically (as viewed) towards and away from one another so that in one operative position (not shown) sheet material therebetween may be formed. In the embodiment illustrated, the edge of the sheet 2 is formed with a profile provided by the profile 12 of the tool 10 carried by the platen 7 and is cut by a knife 13 of the tool 10.
The tool 10 is thus effectively both a cutting and forming tool, the cutting being known as die cutting.
In the embodiment shown, the platen 11 carries on the surface facing the tool 10, a removable metallised cloth or fabric 14. (It will be understood that this cloth or fabric 14 is optional).
In use the sheet material 2 is placed between the platens 7, 8 in the open or one operative position shown, the space between the platens is closed by bringing one platen towards the other, or by moving both platens by means not shown, and the tool 10, which is heated, die-cuts the material by its cutting tool part 13 and simultaneously moulds by the profile 12 the cut edge by softening the material of the sheet 2 under heat and pressure, and fuses the upper and lower layers 3, 4 of the material together to close the flutes 6. The platens 7, 8 then move apart and the sheet now formed by being cut and moulded, is removed.
The knife 13 forms a complementary impression 15 in the fabric as shown.
If a different edge profile is required on the sheet 2 the tool 10 is changed and, if used, the metallised fabric 14 is peeled off the platen 11, and replaced by a new one, if used, which is initially undeformed and which receives an impression on the first forming operation. The fabric 14 in all cases can withstand repeated operation.
The apparatus 1 thus cuts and edge seals in a single forming operation. The apparatus also acts continuously in that an unformed sheet comes in from one side, is cut and formed, and exits the other side of the machine. The apparatus can be operated manually, or automatically, and can be under numeric control.
Any shape of sheet 2 can be formed in the apparatus.
Claims (8)
1. Apparatus for forming a heat deformable material, comprising two opposed platens one of which at least is heatable and one of which at least carries a forming profile, the other being substantially planar, and means for moving the platens towards and away from one another so that in one operative position material therebetween may be formed.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1, the said other platen comprising a surface layer.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 2, the surface layer being removable.
4. Apparatus according to Claim 2 or Claim 3, the surface layer comprising a fabric.
5. Apparatus according to Claim 4, the fabric being metallised.
6. Apparatus according to Claim 5, the metal comprising aluminium.
7. Apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
8. A method for forming a heat deformable material, comprising the step of using apparatus according to any preceding claim.
