This invention relates to a method of and apparatus for producing blanks for foldedcontainers, such as that shown and described in our application 5 for patent for corner seals for boxes, Serial N 0. 155,024, filed of even date herewith, and
in which means is provided in the blanks themselves for closing the corners of the containers when the blanks are folded and closed 10 to form the complete containers.
The object of the invention is to produce by a single operation of the blank forming:
apparatus, a blank which, when folded .to produce the completed container for which it is designed, will include means integral with the material of the container for closing the corners thereof, so that the container will be suitable for the packaging of pulverulent, granular and flakysubstances and its corners so sealed that such substances cannot sift therefrom, andthat vermin cannot find access therethrough to the interior of the container.
The invention consists in a method of 25 forming the blanks for folded-blank boxes whereby the corners thereof will be sealed, comprising the formation of incisions in various of the sealing flaps of the blanks for such boxes, which when the blank is folded and the flaps closed, will produce a web closing each corner of .the box; and the invention consists further in the apparatus for carrying'out this method, as we will proceed now to explain and finally claim.

comprises broad sides 1 and 2 and narrow sides 3 and 4, the broad side 1 having formed the blank is folded to form abox, along the free edge of the narrow side 4. divisions of the blank are vertical creases or scores 6 and longitudinal creases or scores 7 Extending from the broad sides 1 and 2 at both ends are end sealing flaps 8, 8 and 9, 9 respectively, and extending from the narrow sides 3 and 4 at both ends, are end sealing flaps 10, 10 and 11, 11, respectively. All of these sealing flaps are foldable upon the creases or scores 7 and are defined by cuts 12.
In order to provide means for positively sealing the corners of the containers formed from blanks of this general character, we terminate the cuts 12 at a short distance from the creases or scores 5 and join their ends to these creases by diagonal cuts or incisions 13 which extend only part way through the material of the blank from the inner side 01 thereof, as indicated in Fig. 3. On the outside I) of the blank the cuts 12 are joined to the creases or folding lines 5 b cuts or incisions 14, indicated in light dotted lines in Fig. 1 and by a full line ,in Fig. 3, which extend only part way through the material of the blank .from the outer side 6 thereof.
It is in the method of and apparatus hereinafter fully explained, for forming the cuts or incisions 13 and 14, that our invention particularly resides.
By providing the cuts or incisions 13 and 14, it is possible, during the folding of the blank to form a box or container, to produce webs of the material of the blank at all of thecorners of the box to completely seal the corners. In order thatthis may be fully First, the pasting flap 5 is folded inwardly along its adjacent crease or score 6 and pasted to the inner face of the narrow side 4, as hereinbefore the crease 6 lying along the edge 0 of the side 4. Then the thus pasted blank is bent upon the creases or scores 6 to rectangular form. Then the'sealing flaps 10 and 11 are bent inwardly toward each other as indicated in Fig, 2. It is at this point in the operation as follows v indicated, with its fold on I of its faces,
or peeling of the material substantially midwhen the sealing flaps 8 and 9 are folded way of its thickness, forms a web 15, Figs. 2 and 4, at each corner. of the box, which,
down upon the previously infolded flaps 10 and 11 and securely pasted, will completely close and seal the corners.
As. stated, when the flaps 10 and 11 are folded in, a web 15 closing each corner is formed. Then, when the flaps 8 and 9 are folded down upon the flaps 10 and 11 and upon each other and .pasted, a crimp or fold is formed in each of the webs 11 and they become pasted to the adjacent adhering faces of the flaps Sand 9.
The method of forming the corner seal of the container resides in the provision at the 'unction of the sides and end sealing flaps thereof of incisions extending only part way through the material of the blank, which, when the blank is folded, result in stripping or peeling of the material of the blank substantially midway of its thickness between such incisions, whereby the webs are formed at. the several corners of the box.
The method of our invention may be carried out upon any kind of press ordinarily used for" cutting and creasing paper box blanks, such as a cylinder cutting-press, of. substantially the type illustrated in Fig. 5, by employment of apparatus embodying cer- 'tain modifications of the elements ordinarily used in forming blanks upon presses of this character, as Wlll now be described. In this connection, attent1on-1s directed particularly 'to Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8.
In Fig. 5, we have shown, somewhat diagrammatically, the parts of a cylinder cutting-press, essential to the carrying out of our invention, as follows:-Reference char-:

All of these parts are of ordinary construction, and so function that when the cylinder 21 rotates, the gear 20 in meshing with the rack 19 will ,move the bed 18 upon the rollers 17 undo;- the cylinder in the direction of the arrow, and when the gear 20 is out of engagement with the rack 19, the bed will be edge 0 respectively;
returned to the position shown, by other so arranged wlth respect to each other as to cut the material operated upon to produce a blank or blanks of the conformation desired. Such a block and its knives and scoring or creasing members form the cutting die. Upon the cylinder is mounted. a matrix or plurality of matrices 25 complemental to the cutting die or dies, and formed of material of such flexibility as to be capable of being bent to the curvature of the cylinder. Fibre board is suitable for this purpose.
When a press of the bed and platen type is used, the cutting die will be mounted upon the bed of the press and the matrix upon the platen. I
It is in these last mentioned parts of the apparatus, namely, thecutting die and the matrix, that the changes which characterize our apparatus are made.
In Fig. 7 we have shown a plan view of a cutting die for forming the blank illustrated in Fig. 1. This die comprises the wooden block 24, which may be made up of a number of pieces secured together and in which are fixedly mounted the following knives and scoring or creasing members, namely; the knife 26, which makes the complete out along the left hand edge of the pasting flap 5; the knives 27, which make the cuts at the ends of this pasting flap; the knives 28, which make the cuts 12 completely through the blank; the knives 29 and 30, which make the cuts delimiting the blank at-the ends of the sealing flaps 8, 9, 10 and 11 and at the the scoring members 31, which make the folding creases or scores 6,
and the scoring members 32, which make the folding'creases or scores 7. In addition to the knives and scoring or creasing members just enumerated, we mount in the block short knife sections 33 for forming the cuts or incisions 14 in the blank, these knife sections being arranged in line with the knives 28 but having heir cutting edges depressed below the cutting edges of the knives 28 (see Fig. 8), so that in the operation of forming the blank they will cut only part way through the material of the blank.
All of the. cutting knives are flanked by resilient members 34, ordinarily formed of rubber or felt and capable of so yielding as to permit the knives to pass through the material of the blank upon pressure thereon of the matrix carried by the cylinder.

It is formed with grooves 35 and 36 extending into its surface sutficiently to allow the scoring or creasin members 31 and32, respectively, to crease the material of the blank along the lines 6 and 7, as is usual in apparatus of this charac ter, and is cut away completely at those por arranged to cut entirely through the blank.
A departure from the ordinary practice in apparatus of this character, and which of small knives novel features of our inapplication to the matrix 37, the edges 38of which are turned up substantially at rght angles to the body portions of same and stand away from the bodyportions a distance forms one of the vention, is the suificient to cut partway through the mate-- rial of the blank. Thesesmall knives are upon one side by one set and side by the other "set. And it required two "of gummed tape so angularlyarranged and so positioned as to produce the cuts orincisions 13 in the blank. As one means of securing the knives 37 to the matrix, we have shown small pieces 39 affixed to .the knives and to the matrix, but other appropriate means might be used, if desired.
In "order to produce a yielding surface against which the material of the blank may be forced under the influence of the knives 37, we provide the block 24 with suitably arranged abutments 40, comprising plungers 41 mounted in sleeves 42. block 24 and having heads springs 44, whereby they are resiliently supported to yieldingly react to the pressure of the knives 37 against the material of the blank, so that when the cutting edges 38 of the knives 37 have entered the material of the blank and the body portions of the knives are in contact with the blank, no further cutting will take place, the abutments 40 yielding under the pressure applied.
So far as we are aware, it is a complete departure from established practice, in apparatus of this character, to embed in a single installation means-whereby a s eet of material may be incised upon both of its sides simultaneously, the difficulties attending such an operation having, we believe, remained-unsolved prior to our invention. Heretofore, where it was desired to produce cuts or incisions'upon both sides of a piece of material of the character in question, it was necessary to provide two sets of dies and matrices, the material being out upon the other 43 backed up by separate operations to complete this procedure, the blank being turned over after operation upon it by one set to present its opposite side for operation upon it by the other set.
Obviously, by operating upon both sides of the material simultaneously, we have greatly reduced the cost of manufacture of supported in the a and scrap from the dies such articles by eliminating one set, die and matrix, and one operation.
The operation of our apparatus in the carrying out of our method by the use of a cylinder pressv of substantially the type illustrated in Fig. 5 is as follows:The die or dies and matrix or matrices are arranged upon the bed and cylinder of the press, respectively, in such relationship as to exactly register when the cylinder rotates and the bed passes beneath it. The press having been adjusted to operate at the desired speed, sheets of blank-forming material, such as boxboard, fibre-board, and the like, are placed upon the dies when .the bed is in the position shqwn in Fig. 5, and, the press being started, the cylinder will rotate and the bed, with the dies and blank-forming material will pass beneath it, the various knives and scoring means, carried both by the dies and matricesprforming the operations, previously described, for which they are designed. Exact register of the dies with the matrices is assured by the meshing of the ring gear 20 with the rack'19. When the cutting and scoring operations have been performed as the dies pass under the cylinder in complemental register with the matrices carried thereby the bed 18 will pass to: the right hand end (Fig. 5) of the machine and the finished blanks and scrap will be discharged from the dies, the resilient members 34 acting to disengage the blanks after the pressure exerted by the matrices has been released.
It is usual to make the press continuous in its operationthroughout a given run, and this being the case, after the blanks and scrap have been discharged from the dies, the bed .18 will be automatically returned to the left of the machine so that it may be supplied with fresh sheets of material and then, in timed relation to the rotation of the ,cylinder, will again automatically pass abled continuously, to produce blanks for folded-blank boxes properly scored and cut and provided'wi-th the incisions hereinbefore mentioned, such incisions being formed upon both sides of the material in asingle operation upon the material of which the blanksare formed.
Various changes, are contemplated as approach the point of within the spirit of. the invention and the scope-of the following claims.
hat we claim is 1. A method of forming the bl'nks .for
folded-blank boxes and the like, whichlin- -cludes cutting and creasing said blanks and producing therein incisions on both sides of the blanks at a single operation;
2. A method of forming the blanks for folded-blank boxes and the like,.which includes simultaneously cutting andcreasing said blanks and producing therein at predetermined points incisions extending only partially through the material of the blank from both faces thereof.
3. A method of forming the blanks for folded-blank boxes, which includes cutting and creasing said blanks to form a box of the desired conformation, and producing incisions in said blanks from both faces thereof at predetermined points thereon simultaneously with said cutting and creasing operation.
4. A method of forming the blanks for folded-blank boxes, which includes cutting and creasing said blanks to form a box of the desired conformation, and producing incisions in said blanks extending only part way through the material of the blank from both faces thereof at predetm'mine'l points thereon simultaneously with said cutting and creasing operation.
A method of forming a blank for folded-blank boxes and the like containers having a plurality of sides and end sealing flaps carried thereby, which includes producing surface incisions so located adjacent to the juncture of the flaps with the sides that portions of the material of the blank contiguous to the incisions will provide sealing Webs when the flaps are position.
6. A method of forming a blank for folded-blank boxes and the likecontainers having a plurality of sides and end sealing flaps, which includes producing surface incisions simultaneously on opposite faces of the blank so located adjacent to the junctures of the flaps with the sides that portions of the material of the blank contiguous to the incisions will provide sealing webs when the flaps are folded into sealing position.
7. A method of forming a blank for folded-blank boxes and the like containers having a plurality of sides and end sealing flaps carried thereby, which includes "producing diagonally arranged surface incisions so located adjacent to the junctures of the flaps with the sides that portions of the material of the blank contiguous to the incisions wil produce sealing webs when the flaps are folded into sealing position.

A method of forming a blank for folded-blank boxes and the like containers having a plurality of sides and end sealing flaps carried thereby, which includes producing}; surface incisions so located adjacent to the junctures of the flaps with the sides that portions of the material of the blank contiguous to the incisions will produce sealing webs at the corners of the containers when the flaps are folded into end sealing position.
9. Apparatusfor producing a blank for folded into sealing l thrust of said knife.
' responding to a forming folded-blank boxesand the like, including a die and a matrix, and means carried by said die and means carried by said matrix, whereby an incision may be made in each side of said blank at a single operation of said apparatus, the incisions being of such character that the material of the blank may peel contiguous to them so as to form webs to close the corners of the box formed from the blank.
10. Apparatus for forming a blank for folded-blank boxes and the like having a plurality of sides and end sealing flaps carried thereby, including a die and a matrix, a knife carried by said die and a knife carried by said matrix, said knives located at points corresponding to the corners of the end flaps of the blank, whereby an incision may be made in each face of said blank at a single operation of said apparatus.

Apparatus for forming the blanks for folded-blank boxes, including a die and a matrix complemental thereto, said die provided with knives and creasing members and said matrix provided with knives and with depressions complemental to said creasingmembers, certain of the knives of said die and the knives of said matrix being arranged to produce incisions in said blank from both faces thereof and extending only part way therethrough at a single blankforming operation.

Apparatus for forming a blank for folded-blank boxes, including members corresponding to a die and a matrix, a knife carried by one of said members and arranged to produce an incision extending onlypart 'way through said blank from. one face thereof, and an abutment carried by the other of said members and arranged to support said blank against the thrust of said knife.

Apparatus for: forming a blank for folded-blank boxes, including members corresponding to a die and a. matrix, a knife carried by one of said members and arranged to produce an incision extending only part \way through said blank from one face thereof, and an abutment carried by the other of said members and arranged to resiliently support said blank against the 14.
