Abstract
Die-cutting apparatus 1 comprises a fixed tool body 2 with a body portion 3 having a tool support face 3a, and a rocking block 7 which is movable towards and away from the fixed tool body to effect die-cutting. The body portion 3 incorporates heating elements 9 and at least one further heating element 10 may be provided in the rocking block 7. The provision of the heating elements 9 and 10 render the apparatus useful for effecting die-cut operations on sheets of plastics materials. <IMAGE>
Description
SHEET FORMING
The present invention relates to apparatus for effecting a forming operation on a sheet of plastics material.
The forming may, for example, be a die-cut, an embossing, a creasing, or like operation on the material. For convenience all such operations are referred to herein as die-cutting, and the term die-cut is to be construed accordingly.
One known construction of die-cutting apparatus comprises a fixed body having a tool support face around the periphery of which is an upstanding flange defining a "well" in which a die-cutting tool may be located. The machine also comprises a block (e.g. a so-called rocking block) on which the material to be die-cut is positioned. The block (carrying material) is moved towards the fixed body to effect the die-cut operation.
A problem can however exist in the die-cutting of plastics sheet which may require heating before a satisfactory die-cutting operation can be effected on the sheet. For example, if a cut is to be formed in the plastics sheet it may be necessary for the latter to be heated otherwise the cut may have a jagged edge.
In the abovedescribed apparatus, the heating of a plastics sheet is generally catered for by providing a removable heater plate (incorporating internal heating elements) in the well. Heat from the heater plate is transferred by conduction to the die-cutting tool.
However this arrangement has two principal disadvantages. Firstly, the heater plate takes up a proportion of the depth of the well so that there is less room for a die-cutting tool to be accommodated.
This means that the depth of the tool (e.g. cutters) needs to be reduced. Secondly, the heater plate is generally of steel whereas the abovementioned tool support face is generally of cast-iron. The steel plate transfers heat to the cast-iron face but their different coefficients of expansion means that the heater plate tends to deform sightly thereby reducing the accuracy of the die-cutting operation.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate the abovementioned disadvantages.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided die-cutting apparatus comprising a fixed body with a body portion having a tool support face, and a sheet support block which is moveable toward and away from the tool support face wherein heating means are provided behind said face for effecting heating of the face.
Preferably the heating means comprise at least one heating element are provided internally of the body portion on which the tool support face is provided.
By providing the heating means behind the tool support face the abovedescribed problems associated with the provision of a separate heater plate are avoided. In particular, there is no need to use a die-cutting tool of reduced thickness nor are there problems associated with deformation of a heater plate.
Preferably the sheet support block is also provided with a heating element so that both sides of the plastics sheet are heated during a die-cutting operation.
The tool support face may have an upstanding flange defining a well in which the die-cutting tool may be located.
Plastics sheet materials which may be die-cut using the apparatus of the invention include inter alia polyesters, polypropylenes, and PVPs.
The invention will be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of one embodiment of die-cutting apparatus in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is an alternative view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
The illustrated die-cutting apparatus 1 comprises a fixed body depicted generally as 2 having a body portion 3 with a tool support face 3a. The fixed body 2 encloses various components of the apparatus, e.g. gears.
Provided around tool support face 3a is a bounding flange 4 defining a "well" in which a die-cutting tool 5 including a cutting element 6 (depicted as hexagonal) is mounted. The apparatus further comprises a block 7 on which a sheet of plastics material 8 to be diecut may be supported. Block 7 is pivotally movable towards and away from body portions 3 whereby the sheet 8 may be presented to the cutting tool 6. Block 7 is known in the art as a "rocking block".
In accordance with the invention, the body portion 3 is provided with heating elements 9 each of which is provided in a suitably dimensioned bore drilled in body portion 3. Four such heating elements 9 are shown for block 3 but a greater or lesser number could be used. Additionally, block 7 also incorporates a further heating element 10.
Heating elements 9 and 10 may be resistance heating elements associated with a suitable temperature control provided on the apparatus.
In operation of the apparatus, the heating elements 9 cause the fixed body portion 3 to be heated which in turn transfers heat to the metal cutting tool 6. Thus the cutting edge of tool 6 which contacts one face of the plastics sheet 8 is heated. Similarly the other side of plastics sheet 8 is heated by the rocking block 7 (in turn heated by element 10).
The abovedescribed heating ensures that a "clean" cut is obtained in the plastics sheet.
The illustrated cutting tool 6 could be replaced by an embossing tool or a creasing tool. In the case of the embossing tool the apparatus may be used, for example, in the formation of membrane switches.
