Abstract
The suit is provided with means to open the back to facilitate donning or doffing. In particular, the means comprises a slide fastener and extends from the back and around the front at vertically-spaced locations 5.
Description
ONE-PIECE EXPOSURE OR SURVIVAL SUIT
This invention relates to a one-piece exposure or survival suit for example of the kind used by aircrew.
Known one-piece suits of the kind set forth usually have a first slide fastener which runs diagonally from the shoulder across the chest to the hips. A further slide fastener is also provided which runs horizontally in the region of the crutch. When the first slide fastener is opened the suit can be entered or removed. When the suit is donned, the legs are first pushed into the trouser part, the arms into the sleeves, and the back portion and chest portion of the suit are then pulled over the wearer's back and chest before the slide fastener is closed. Entering and removing the suit in this manner is clumsy and inconvenient because the back creates difficulties in entering the arms and pulling the upper part of the suit over the wearer's head and shoulders.Due to the clumsy procedure required to put the suit on or off and the time required for doing so, it is usually not possible for, for example a pilot, to take the upper part of the suit off. The slide fastener running into the crutch serves to enable the pilot to relieve himself.
The present invention is intended to overcome the above problem and to provide a one-piece suit which can be donned and removed quickly and in which only one slide fastener is required.
According to the present invention a one-piece exposure or survival suit is provided with means to open the back to increase the dimensions of the suit between the waist and the shoulders to assist entry and removal.
Preferably the means to open the back also act to open at least part of the front of the suit.
The means to open the suit can also act to open the front of the suit at two substantially vertically spaced apart locations.
The lower opening at the front of the suit can therefore be in the region of the crutch.
Preferably the opening means comprises a slide fastener and this can be arranged to extend from the region of one breast at the front of the suit, substantially spirally across the back and down to the region of the crutch.
The direction of opening of the slide fastener conveniently runs from the crutch towards the chest of the suit.
The invention can be performed in various ways but one embodiment will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Figure 1 is an isometric diagrammatic view from the front of a
pilot's flying suit according to the invention as closed and
worn; and
Figure 2 is an isometric diagrammatic view from the rear of the
suit shown in Figure 1 with the slide fastener opened.
As shown in the drawings a suit according to the invention is one-piece and has a trouser part 1 with an upper part 2. Sleeves 3 are provided in the upper part 2 together with a neck opening 4. Starting from the region of one breast just below the armpit a slide fastener 5 runs spirally across the back down to about the region of the crutch.
The part of the fastener running across the back is shown in broken lines in Figure 1. The direction of opening the fastener runs from the crutch to the chest, the direction of closing being in the opposite direction.
When the slide fastener has been opened (as shown in Figure 2), the trouser part is donned first, the arms are then introduced to the sleeves and the wearer's head is pushed through the neck opening 4.
The suit is closed by operating the slide fastener 5. As the upper part 2 of the suit can be put on in a short time and without difficulty, a pilot on stand-by can remove the upper part 2 from the upper part of the body. If while wearing the upper part the pilot needs to relieve himself, it is merely necessary to open the slide fastener 5 in the crutch region.
Because the fastener extends around the body it is possible to don the upper part of the suit without having to stretch the back of the suit to enable the upper part to be passed over the head to allow the head to enter the neck opening and the arms to enter the sleeves.
Thus the upper part 2 can be put on quickly as opposed to the previous constructions in which the wearer has to struggle to pass the upper part of the suit over his head and shoulders and to enter the sleeves due to the back extending from the waist to the shoulders even when the slide fastener at the front is open.
