Separate heater and evaporator apparatus; progressive evaporators; vapours, utilizing for effecting further evaporation; multiple-effect apparatus. -Evaporating or distilling apparatus of the kind described in Specification 201,123 is provided with means for regulating automatically the supply of liquid according to the amount which is evaporated. Liquid is circulated by a pump f through a heater r and through overflow compartments in a vapour separator e. Fresh liquid is supplied from a pipe j through a valve h controlled by variations of the level n of the liquid in one of the compartments by a tube a which communicates with the compartment. The expansion of the tube a varies according to the height of liquid in it, as the water in the lower part not being in circulation will have a lower temperature than the steam in the upper part. The movements of the tube a control the valve h through levers b, c, d, g. The vapours evolved in the separator e may be compressed and used as heating-medium in the heater r. A multipleeffect apparatus may be constituted by a series of similar evaporators, operated under successively reduced pressures, in which the steam evolved in the evaporator is used as heating-agent in the succeeding evaporator. The regulating-device is used to control the feed of liquid from one evaporator into the succeeding one.
