Description
RENDER OR PLASTER PROFILE
The present invention relates to a profile or bead which is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable for use with thin coat applications of render or plaster.
Render and plaster profiles and beads are well known in the building industry and are used for determining the depth and act as a guide in plaster or render as applied to an existing wall.
There are various applications and thus what is usually referred to as a corner bead is provided to ensure a true straight corner that protects and reinforces render or plaster where it is most vulnerable. Such devices are known which have two wing portions which are usually connected to the corner of the wall by nails or render material dabs and the wings of the bead are pressed into the dabs. The bead is then plumbed and squared to make sure that there is sufficient thickness of render on each corner of the wall and the render or plaster is then applied using the corner of the bead as the corner of a wall.
There are various ways of attaching the wings to the wall, for example galvanised nails or wire ties can be used on a metal lath. It will be appreciated that the wings of the bead are embedded in the render or plaster if it is used.
Stop beads are also known which are used in a similar manner to provide an end to plaster or render on a wall and similarly bellcast beads provide means for finishing the lower edges of render work. Once again the beads provide a straight line that protects and also reinforces the render or plaster. In this type of construction there is only one wing and this is again embedded in the plaster or render.
The above are examples of what are know as profiles or beads but in order to avoid confusion in the present specification the term "render profile" will be used to define this type of device.
The present invention is intended to provide a render profile which can provide the additional advantage of being assembled on site and ensures integrity of reinforcing to the render or plaster.
According to the present invention a render or plaster profile comprises a base having an extension which projects away from a location portion and a capping member which is a snap or press fit with said locating portion and which maintains a strip or sheet of attachment material in position on the base.
If, for example, a corner bead or profile is required then two opposed extensions can be provided both of which project from the location portion. In a corner profile extensions can be at an angle to each other although if the profile is required to maintain a particular level of render or plaster in an existing wall then the opposed extensions can be in line with each other.
In one preferred construction the capping member engages over a projecting rib on the locating portion.
This rib can be provided with an extended nose projecting away from the extension or extensions if required. The height of the rib will define the thickness of the render or plaster to be applied.
With this construction the capping member preferably has side portions which extend to a point adjacent to the extension or extensions.
The attachment material is preferably located between the rib and the capping member. In one convenient construction the extended nose is castellated and the attachment material is provided with openings through which said castellations on the nose project.
In an alternative construction the construction the capping member can be arranged to engage within a groove in the locating portion.
Once again the capping member can be provided with an extended nose projecting away from the extension or extensions to define the depth of plaster or render.
The capping member can be provided with a projecting flange or flanges which overlap the adjacent edge or edge portions of the groove. In a preferred construction the attachment material is located between the groove and the capping member.
With this arrangement the location portion can be castellated and the attachment material can be provided with openings through which the castellations project.
In any case, and with any of the above constructions, the attachment material can be flexible and be made, for example, from expanded or perforated metal or plastic material preferably in the form of a flexible mesh such as a glass fibre mesh cloth.
Again, and alternatively, the attachment material can be substantially rigid and be shaped to fit between the base and the capping member.
This substantially rigid attachment material can again be in the form of a mesh made, for example, from aluminium or galvanised steel.
The base and or the capping member can be made from a plastics material, for example PVC, or from a metal.
The invention can be performed in many ways and some embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which

and,
Figure 15 is an end view of a movement bead
incorporating constructions of the kind shown in
Figures 11 and 12.
Figures 1 and 2 show the construction of a corner bead or profile according to the invention and which comprises a base 1 made from a suitable synthetic resin material such as PVC. The base has two extensions 2 and 3 which extend at right angles to each other and away from a location portion 4 which is in the form of a projecting rib.
The extensions 2 and 3 are provided with openings 5 for the admission of plaster or render.
A capping member 6 is provided which is in the form of a tube with an open side 7 and projecting flanges 8. The dimensions of the tube and the rib are arranged so that attachment material in the form of a strip of flexible glass fibre mesh cloth 9 can be located between them. Again, the dimensions are arranged so that with the mesh 9 between the parts the capping member is a snap fit over the ridge 4.
The capping member can be made from a synthetic plastics material or a metal such as aluminium provided the snap fit is achieved.
As will be seen from the lower part of Figure 1 the flanges 7 assist in holding the mat 9 in place.
The base 1 and the capping member 6 are provided in the usual standard lengths of 3 metres.
The lower part of Figure 1 indicates the wall 10 to which the corner bead or profile is secured by pins 11 or suitable dabs.
Figure 2 shows a corner bead or profile in position on the wall 10 and with the plaster or rendering 12 applied to it. It will be seen that the capping member 6 provides a corner up to which the render or plaster can be applied at a set level.
As mentioned above the mesh 9 can be applied as a strip but alternatively it may be provided as a sheet which can be first applied to the wall and before the corner bead or profile is fitted.
With the construction described above the corner bead or profile can be assembled on site with "wings" of mesh as required. If desired the extensions 2 and 3 can first be secured to the wall 10 and the mesh 9 applied subsequently thus enabling accurate location on the corner.
Figure 3 shows an alternative construction in which similar reference numerals to those used in Figures 1 and 2 are employed to indicate similar parts. In this construction however the location portion 4 is provided with an extended nose 14 on which the rib 15 is located.
Openings 16 are provided in the nose 14 for the ingress of plaster or render.
The capping member 6 has lower side portions 17 which extend down to the flanges 8 and these other side portions also carry openings 18 which may or may not precisely align with the openings 16 in the nose but, nevertheless allow plaster or render to penetrate the construction.
As will be seen from Figure 4 this construction allows for a thicker layer of render or plaster 12.
The upper surface of the capping 6 can be made to any desired shape to provide a rounded or sharp corner.
Although in the above embodiments the base and capping member are said to be made from a plastics material they could be manufactured from metal or from a combination or metal and plastics material provided the appropriate snap fit is produced between them.
The plastics material mesh can be replaced by a substantially rigid material, for example metal, but if this is utilised then it requires prebending in order to fit over the rib on the base 1.
Figure 5 shows an alternative construction for a corner bead or profile in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those employed in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 4. In this construction however the location portion 20 of the base 1 is provided with a circular groove 21 which has an opening 22 into which a rib 23 on a capping member 24 can be engaged. The capping member has a nose portion 25 provided with openings 26 and an outer end 27. The mesh is applied over the extensions 2, 3 and location portion 20 and into the groove 21. The rib 23 on the capping member 24 is now snapped into position to retain the mesh 9 in place.
The capping member is provided with projecting flanges 28 which assist in retaining the mesh 9.
Figure 6 shows a similar construction to that shown in Figure 9 but in this arrangement the extensions 32, 33 are at an acute angle to each other which is less than 90" and the location portion 20 has an inner abutment 34 which locates against the corner of the wall 10 and acts to define the depth of plaster or render 12 to be applied.
Figure 7 shows another alternative construction in which the base is indicated by reference numeral 40 and which is provided with right angled extensions 41,42, a location portion 43, an extended nose portion 44 and an engagement rib 45. A capping member 46 has extended lower side walls 47 and flanges 48. Thus, the construction described is somewhat similar to that shown in Figures 3 and 4. As is most clearly shown in Figure 8 however the extended nose portion 44 is shaped to provide a series of castellations 50 with openings 51 between them. The flanges 48 and the capping member 46 are also cut away to provide a series of indentations 52.
Access openings 53 are provided in the nose 44 and similar openings 54 are formed in the extended lower side walls 47.
In the construction shown in Figures 7 and 8 a rigid expanded metal mesh 55 is used as the attachment material and this is applied so that the castellations 50 pass through the openings in the material in the manner shown in
Figure 8. The material can be bent to shape either before or after application to the base member. The capping member 46 is applied over the castellations and the indentations 52 accommodate the strands of the expanded metal and act to hold it in place.
Once again with this construction the base and capping member can be made from metal or plastics materials or a combination.
Figures 9 and 10 show a construction somewhat similar to that shown in Figures 7 and 8 but utilising the type of construction shown in Figure 5. In this construction therefore the base member 61 has a locating portion 62 in which is provided a groove 63 to receive a rib 64 formed on a capping member 65. The capping member has curved flanges 66 which extend around the wall of the groove 64 when it is in place and as is most clearly shown in Figure 9.
The location portion 63 of the base member 61 is cut away to provide a series of castellations 67 and openings 68.
The expanded metal attachment material 69 is again located over the castellations 67 so that the strands of material are just below the groove 63. The capping member 65 is now applied and the edge of the rib 64 engages against the strands of the expanded metal 69 and acts to hold this attachment material in place.
Holes 70 are provided in the nose of the capping member 65 to allow penetration of the plaster or render.
In the arrangements described above the invention is
applied to a corner bead or profile but Figure 11 shows how it may be utilised when applied as a stop bead or profile.
Thus in this construction the base 80 has only one extension 81 and a location portion 82 which terminates in a projecting rib 83. The rib is shaped to receive a capping member 84 which has an internal groove 85 suitably shaped to enable it to be snapped into place over the rib 83. As will be seen from Figure 11 the inner ridge surface of the capping member is provided with barbs 86 to assist retention of the plaster or render.
In the construction shown flexible attachment material is used in the form of a glass fibre mesh cloth 87.
Barbs 88 are also provided on the outer face of the extension 81, again to assist in retention of plaster or render.
The use of stop beads of this type is well known and it will be clear to the man skilled in the art as to precisely how the device of the present invention can be used.
From Figure 12 it will be seen that the extension 81 is provided with openings 89 to assist retention.
It will be appreciated that openings of this type can also be provided in the extensions shown in the other constructions described above.
Figure 13 shows a cross-section through a bellcast type stop bead which are used to define the lower levels of plaster or render applications on vertical walls.
This construction is similar to that shown in Figure 11 and the same reference numerals are used to define similar parts. In this construction however the rib 83 is located at angle to the extension 81 and a suitably shaped capping member 90 is used.
It will be seen that in the construction shown in
Figures 11, 12 and 13 the capping member and rib are shaped so that the capping member is rigidly locked in place once it has been applied.
As with the other construction the various parts can be made from metal or a synthetic plastics material.
The end bead as shown in Figure 14 employs the kind of construction shown in the stop bead of Figures 11 and 12 and comprise a base 91 having extensions 92 and 93 at right angles to each other and which are provided with upstanding barbs in the form of rails 94, the location portion 95 is extended to form a nose which terminates in the projecting shaped rib 96. The rib is shaped to receive a capping member 97 which has an internal groove 98 suitable shaped to enable it to be snapped into place over the rib 96. The inner ridge surface of the capping member 97 is provided with barbs 99 to assist retention of the plaster or render.
The flexible attachment material is again in the form of a glass fibre mesh cloth 100.
Openings (not shown) are again provided in the extensions 92 and 93 to assist retention in the plaster.
Figure 15 shows how end stops of the kind shown in
Figures 11 and 12 can be used, for example, in a thin coat system as a movement bead.
The end beads carry the same reference numerals to indicate similar parts. Movement beads of this type are used to accommodate expansion and movement between parts of a wall. When employed in this manner two end caps of the kind shown in Figure 11 are moulded simultaneously with a moulding of softer material which joins them together. This joining portion is indicated by reference numeral 110. At the same time a thin web 111 is also moulded in place and is joined to the end caps 112 by thin membranes 113.
When the profile is applied to a wall all the parts are assembled together. After the wall has been rendered the strip 111 is torn off by fracturing the membranes 113.
Thus the joining member 110 protect the wall but acts to accommodate movement. Movement beads of this kind are well known in themselves and will not therefore be described further.
Constructions of the type set forth above can be used in a wide range of profile types and devices and provide the facility for assembly on site and relatively cheap manufacture.
