Description

RENDER OR PLASTER PROFILE The present invention relates to a profile or bead which is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable for use with external applications of render or plaster.
Render and plaster profiles and beads are well known in the building industry and are used for determining the depth and act as a guide in plaster or render as applied to an existing wall.
There are various applications and thus what is usually referred to as a corner bead is provided to ensure a true straight corner that protects and reinforces render or plaster where it is most vulnerable. Such devices are known which have two wing portions which are usually connected to the corner of the wall by nails or render material dabs and the wings of the bead are pressed into the dabs. The bead is then plumbed and squared to make sure that there is sufficient thickness of render on each corner of the wall and the render or plaster is then applied using the corner of the bead as the corner of a wall.
There are various ways of attaching the wings to the wall, for example galvanised nails or wire ties can be used on a metal lath. It will be appreciated that the wings of the bead are embedded in the render or plaster if it is used.
Stop beads are also known which are used in a similar manner to provide an end to plaster or render on a wall and similarly bellcast beads provide means for finishing the lower edges of render work. Once again the beads provide a straight line that protects and also reinforces the render or plaster. In this type of construction there is only one wing and this is again embedded in the plaster or render.
The above are examples of what are know as profiles or beads but in order to avoid confusion in the present specification the term "render profile" will be used to define this type of device.
The present invention is intended to provide a render profile ensures integrity of reinforcing to the render or plaster.
According to the present invention a render or plaster profile comprises a first member with a projecting nose portion and an extension portion, a second member adapted for securing to said capping member and co-operating with said first extension on the capping member, and a strip or sheet of attachment material located between the mutually adjacent faces of said extensions portion and said second member.
Preferably means are included to secure said first extension and said second member together.
The securing means is preferably arranged to pass through the attachment means and thus the extension portion and second member can be secured together by mechanical connections, such as rivets, staples or by crimping after assembly of the attachment material or the securing means may comprise an adhesive.
If desired the extension portion and said second member can be made from a material which can be secured by an ultrasonic assembly and to assist in this construction the extensions can be provided with projections on their mutually adjacent faces.
The attachment material can be expanded or perforated metal, or plastic, wire or fibre mesh, and thus it can be relatively rigid or flexible.
The second member can be provided with means for location on a wall.
Thus, the invention can be applied to any form of profile and if a corner bead or profile is required the first member can be provided with two opposed extension both of which extend away from said nose portion and said second member can also have two opposed extensions which are shaped to co-operate with the opposed extensions on the first member to locate a strip or strips, or sheet or sheets of attachment material between them.
The second member can be be provided with a spacer extending in a direction away from the nose portion which can be used to locate the profile on, for example, a corner of a wall or against a wall.
In a corner profile, as referred to above, the extension portions and extensions can be at an angle to each other although if the profile is required to maintain a particular level of render or plaster on an existing wall then the opposed extension portions and extensions can be in line with each other.
The invention can be performed in many ways and some embodiments will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic exploded end view of a corner bead or profile according to the invention; Figure 2 is a diagrammatic exploded end view of an alternative construction; Figure 3 is a side elevation of part of the construction shown in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a diagrammatic end view of the constructions shown in Figures 2 and 3 when assembled; Figure 5 is a diagrammatic exploded end view of a stop bead; Figure 6 is a semi-diagrammatic end view of an alternative construction of stop bead in a semi assembled portion; and, Figure 7 is a diagrammatic end view of a bellcast bead in a semi-assembled position.
Figure 1 shows the construction of a corner bead profile according to the invention which comprises a first member in the form of a capping member 1 having a projecting nose portion 2 and an extension portion 3. There is an opposed first extension 4 which is normal to the extension portion 3. The lower surfaces 5 of the extension portions 3 and 4 are provided with projections 6. The dimensions of the extension portions 3 and 4 are adapted for location on a second member provided by a base 7 which has extensions 8 and 9 which are again at right angles to each other and the upper surfaces 10 of which are provided with projections 11.
The lower or inner surfaces of the extensions 8 and 9 are provided with spacers 12 and there is a third spacer 13.
Located between the extension portions 3,4 and extensions 8,9 is a sheet of expanded metal 14 which is bent at right angles and which acts as attachment material. Alternatively two separate strips or separate straps at desired centres down the length of the bead can be used.
The profiles provided by the capping member 1 and the base 7 are in the usual standard length of 3 metres.
In the construction shown the capping member 1 and base 7 are located together with the mesh 14 in between them. The capping member and base are made from a suitable synthetic plastics material and are secured together by the use of an ultrasonic assembly which can be passed along the length of the bead and which acts to melt the material of the projections 6 and 11 and to secure them together through the attachment material 14 thus holding the whole construction rigidly together.
The use of such plaster profile is well known in as much that the base 7 is placed against the wall with the projection 13 resting against the corner and the projections 12 resting against the sides of the wall and the plaster or rendering is applied to it. The outer end 16 of the nose 2 provides the corner up to which the render or plaster is applied at a set level.
Prior to the above process the attachment material can be connected to the wall by pins or suitable dabs as is well known in the art.
In the construction shown the attachment material is shown as a single strip but if desired two separate strips could be employed. Again, the strips could be replaced by a sheet which can be applied to the wall. It will be appreciated that in the construction described above the corner bead or profile can be assembled on cite with "wings" of attachment material as required.
Figure 2 is an exploded end view of a construction similar to that shown in Figure 1 and the same reference numerals are used to identify similar parts. In this construction however the nose 2 is provided with an pair of projecting flanges 20 which assist in keying and stabilising the nose in the render or plaster when applied.
In Figure 2 the attachment material is omitted.
Again, in this construction it will be seen that the spacers 12 and 13 are not included.
Figure 3 shows a side elevation of the capping member 1 and it will be seen that the upper part of the nose 2 is provided with openings 21 which again assist in keying the profile into the render or plaster. Additionally the outer surface of the nose 2 is provided with small projections, some of which are indicated by reference numeral 22. These again are provided to assist in keying the plaster or render to the profile.
If desired apertures 21 and projections 22 can also be provided in the construction shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 shows the construction shown in Figures 2 and 3 when assembled. It will be seen that the projections 6 and 11 have now melted together and the capping member 1 and base are securely fastened together with the attachment material 14 held between them. It will be appreciated that the construction shown in Figure 1 assembles in a similar manner.
Figure 5 shows how the invention can be used when applied as a stop bead or profile. In this construction the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those shown in Figure 1 but it will be seen that in this construction the nose 2 of the first member 12 is at right angles to the extension 3 and an extension member 23 and the extension 4 is replaced by a plain flange 24. The second member is in the form of an element 25 provided with the projections 11. With this construction the assembly is again connected together prior to being applied to a wall in well known manner.
Figure 6 shows an alternative construction to that shown in Figure 5 and again the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts. In this construction the first member 30 has a nose 2 which is at right angles to an extension member 31 and the extension member 4 is omitted.
The lower part of the nose 30 is recessed at 32 to receive an element 33 which is similar to the element 25 as shown in Figure 5 but is placed in position in the reverse direction.
When the stop bead is initially assembled, in the position shown in Figure 6, the element 33 is located in the recess 32 but when pressure has been applied by the ultrasonic assembly and the projections 6 and 11 have been fastened together through the attachment material 14 the element 33 has moved to a position closer to the extension member 31.
Figure 7 shows a construction of a bellcast type stop bead of the kind which are used to define the lower levels of plaster or render applications on vertical walls. The same reference numerals are used to indicate similar parts to those shown in Figure 6 but in this construction the nose 2 projects from the extension 31 at an angle as will be clearly seen from the drawing.
In all the construction described above expanded metal is used for the attachment material 14 but, if desired, a flexible material such as a glass fibre mesh.
If desired the bosses 6 could be replaced by clips which engage suitable grips which will replace the bosses 11 so that the assembly can simply be snapped together. Again, the assembly could be connected by providing openings in the extension members, extensions and elements through which suitable fasteners, for example rivets, could be employed.
Alternatively the parts could be fastened together by crimping, adhesive or any other suitable fastening means.
Constructions of the type set forth can be used in a wide range of profile types and devices and provide the facility for relatively cheap manufacture from readily available materials.
