Moulds; patterns; moulding processes.-Hollow cutting-dies such as those used for cutting boot soles from leather are cast in a three-part sand mould. The sectional pattern comprises accurate templets 12, 13 facing a slightly smaller body 11. Sectional members 14 of section corresponding to that of the blade part of the cutter are assembled round the templets. The hollow flask is rammed up level and provided with a parting surface. The pattern 11 - - 14 is rammed up in the centre flask, the spider pattern 16 and spur pattern 17 are rammed up in the top flask. The pattern 17 is withdrawn, the top flask removed, inverted, pattern 16 removed and the mould cavity finished off. The pattern parts 11, 12, 13 are removed and the space is rammed up to form a core, the sections 14 are removed and the middle flask is removed and the mould surface finished. The mould is then assembled. The spur serves the purpose of a handle on the die when required.
