Abstract

A shackle 9 having a removable pin 7 and used, for example, for boat mooring, is locked by employing a bracket 8 through which the pin can extend. An anti-theft locking means 6, such as a padlock, can locate through apertures in the bracket and the pin. <IMAGE>

Description

SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK SHACKLES ARE USED IN ALL TRADES WHICH REQUIRE CHAINS AS A FORM OF DETACHABLE LINK FOR LINKING CHAINS OR ITEMS TOGETHER WITH CHAINS FOR EXAMPLE, THE MARINE TRADE, WHERE THEY ARE USED FOR AND ON ANCHOR CHAINS, CRANE CHAINS ETC. THEY CONSIST OF TWO PARTS: A U - SHAPED BODY, WITH A SCREWED SECURING PIN AT THE END TO BRIDGE THE OPENING.
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE SECURING PIN WILL REMAIN IN PLACE AND NOT BECOME LOOSE AND FALL OUT. ALSO, THERE IS NO WAY OF LOCKING THE SHACKLE FOR SECURITY REASONS.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION THERE IS PROVIDED A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK COMPRISING THAT IT BE FITTED TO SHACKLES WITH THE HOLES IN THE SECURING PIN AND BE MADE FROM STAINLESS STEEL.. IT IS FITTED TO THE SHACKLE WHERE THE BRACKET IS THEN STYLED IN AN L SHAPE TO LINE UP WITH THE END OF THE SECURING PIN ON THE OUTER BODY BY MEANS OF LINING UP THE HOLES, ALLOWING A PADLOCK TO BE FITTED. IN THE CASE OF LARGER SHACKLES WHERE A PADLOCK WOULD BE TOO SMALL, A LOCKING PIN CAN BE USED WITH A HOLE AT THE END TO SECURE A PADLOCK . THIS INVENTION CAN STOP PADLOCKS BEING USED AS CHAIN LINK , BY PEOPLE, CREATING A STRESS FACTOR ON THE CHAIN WHICH WOULD IN TIME CAUSE THE PADLOCK TO BREAK . THE DESIGN DOES NOT DIMINISH SECURITY FOR EXAMPLE IN THE CASE OF BOAT MOORINGS; MOREOVER, IT WILL STOP THE SECURING PIN FROM FALLING OUT OR COMPLETELY LOOSENING.THE PADLOCK / LOCKING PIN CAN BE FITTED TO THE HOLES NO MATTER WHERE THE SECURING PIN IS POSITIONED WHEN TIGHTENED UP. THE SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK IS DESIGNED FOR BOTH OUT OF AND UNDER WATER USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH A WATER PROOF PADLOCK.

FIGURE 5 - SHOWS THE BRACKET REFERRING TO THE DRAWING OF THE SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK 8,; THIS IS SECURED TO THE SHACKLE 9 BY THE SHACKLE SECURING PIN 7. THE BRACKET 8 HAS A ROUND SLEEVE WHICH THE SECURING PIN 7 FITS INTO IN ORDER TO HOLD THE BRACKET 8 FIRM AND PARALLEL WITH THE SECURING PIN 7. THE BRACKET 8 CAN ROTATE EITHER WAY ROUND THE SECURING PIN 7 UNTIL IT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BODY OF THE SHACKLE 9. SO THAT THE HOLES ON THE BRACKET 8 CAN BE LINED UP WITH THE HOLES ON THE SECURING PIN 7 iN ANY POSITION THE SECURING PIN 7 STOPS WHEN FULLY TIGHTENED, AT WHICH POINT A PADLOCK 6 MAY GO THROUGH BOTH HOLES AND SECURE THEM AS ONE.
IN ORDER TO OPERATE, THE SECURING PIN 7 IS FULLY REMOVED FROM THE SHACKLE 9 AND ANY CHAINS OR OBJECTS ARE FITTED TO THE SHACKLE BODY 9. THEN THE BRACKET 8 IS PLACED INSIDE OF THE SHACKLE BODY 9 WITH THE HOLE FOR THE PADLOCK 6 POINTING OUT TOWARDS WHERE THE SECURING PIN 7 ENTERS. THE SECURING PIN 7 FITS THROUGH THE FIRST NON - THREADED PART OF THE SHACKLE BODY 9, THEN THROUGH THE SLEEVE OF THE BRACKET 8 TO THE SECOND THREADED PART OF THE SHACKLE BODY 9 WHERE IT IS SCREWED IN FULLY IN THE NORMAL WAY. THE BRACKET 8 1S TURNED TO LINE UP ITS HOLE WITH THE SECURING PIN 7 HOLE AND A PADLOCK 6 IS FITTED rHROUGH THE HOLES OR, IF A PADLOCK IS NOT BIG ENOUGH A LOCKING PIN 10 CAN BE USED WITH A PADLOCK 6 TO SECURE THEM TOGETHER THROUGH THE HOLES.

Claims (6)

1. A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK, TO FIT AND OPERATE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ALL SIZES OF SHACKLES, AS A FORM OF A STRESS FREE LOCK AND AS A SAFETY ITEM TO STOP THE SECURING PIN COMING LOOSE OR FALLING OUT AND CAN BE USED BOTH IN AND OUT OF WATER AND ALSO AS AN ANTI - THEFT DEVICE ON CHAINS TO LINK THEM AND OBJECTS TOGETHER.
2. AS CLAIMED IN 1. THE SHACKLES AT ANY S1ZE CONNECT OBJECTS AND CHAINS TOGETHER WITH THE PULLING STRESS PASSING THROUGH THE SHACKLE AND NOT THE LOCK THEREBY AVOIDING ANY EFFECT OR FORCE ON THE PADLOCK. THE ROUND SLEEVE ON THE BRACKET HOLDS THE BRACKET FIRM AND PARALLEL TO THE SECURING PIN.
3. AS CLAIMED IN 2. TO FIT ALL SIZE SHACKLES WHEREBY IF A PADLOCK IS TOO SMALL TO FIT EITHER IN OR ACROSS THE HOLE, A LOCKING PIN MAY BE USED WITH A PADLOCK ATTACHED AT THE END.
4. AS CLAIMED IN 3. THE PADLOCK OR LOCKING PIN MAY BE FITTED AT ANY POSITION IN WHICH THE SECURING PIN HAS BEEN TIGHTENED.
5. AS CLAIMED IN 4,3,2,1 ONCE THE PADLOCK HAS BEEN FITTED, THE BRACKET WILL NOT ALLOW THE SECURING PIN TO BE UNSCREWED LESS THAN A TURN.
6. A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK SUBSTANTIALLY AS DESCRIBED HEREIN, WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING. (FIGURES 1 - 5)
