Abstract

A shackle has two interengaging members 7 and 9 secured together by a locking means such as a padlock 6. In the embodiment shown, the members have a threaded engagement and the padlock engages the apertured end of member 7 as well as an apertured component 8 carried by member 7. The component 8 can be carried on member 7. In an alternative arrangement there is no threaded engagement, member 7 is a headed pin with an aperture for a padlock at its end remote from the head. <IMAGE>

Description

SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK SHACKLES ARE USED IN ALL TRADES WHICH REQUIRE CHAINS AS A FORM OF DETACHABLE LINK FOR LINKING CHAINS, CABLES, OR ITEMS TOGETHER WITH CHAINS FOR EXAMPLE, THE MARINE TRADE ,WHERE THEY ARE USED FOR ON ANCHOR CHAINS, CRANE CHAINS, ETC. THEY CONSIST OF TWO PARTS : A U - SHAPED BODY, WITH A SECURING PIN AT THE END TO BRIDGE THE OPENING.
THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THE SECURING PIN WILL REMAIN IN PLACE AND NOT BECOME LOOSE AND FALL OUT. ALSO, THERE IS NO WAY OF LOCKING THE SHACKLE FOR SECURITY REASONS.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION THERE IS PROVIDED A SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK COMPRISING THAT THE DEVICE IS FOR SECURING A CHAIN TO FORM A LOCKABLE LINK, THE DEVICE COMPRISING OF A U - SHAPED MEMBER ADAPTED TO RECIEVE LINKS OF THE CHAIN ON ITS LENGTH, A PIN ARRANGED TO BE RECIEVED IN ALIGNED APERTURES IN END PORTIONS OF THE U - SHAPED MEMBER AND TO BE SECURED THERE - IN BY METHOD OF AN INTERNAL THREAD IN ONE OF ITS APERTURES, ONE END PORTION OF THE PIN PROVIDES AN APERTURE. THE SECURING PIN APERTURE WILL RECIEVE THE U - SHAPED CLOSURE OF A PADLOCK TO PASS THROUGH IT.
THE DEVICE FURTHER COMPRISES OF A BRACKET MOUNTED ON A SHACKLE, EITHER ON THE BODY OF THE SHACKLE OR ON THE SECURING PIN. WHICH FURTHER IN ITS CCNFIGURATION IS ARRANGED EXTERNALLY OUT OF THE INCLOSURE OF THE U - SHAPED MEMBER, AT THIS END IT IS ADAPTED WITH AN APERTURE TO RECIEVE THE U - SHAPED CLOSURE OF THE PADLOCK, WHICH MAY PASS THROUGH TO ALIGN IN PARALLEL TO THE SECURING PIN APERTURE WHERE IT MAY ALSO PASS THROUGH. THE U SHAPED MEMBER OF THE PADLOCK SECURES AND LINKS THEM TOGETHER, THUS PREVENTS THE PIN AGAINST FUL PIVOTAL MOVEMENT, WHEREBY IT IS OPFOSEDE BY THE U - SHAPED MEMBER LENGTH IN ANY DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENT.
WHEREBY THE SIZE AND DISTANCE OF THE PIN APERTURE TOWARDS THE MOUNTED MEMBER APERTURE ARE UNACCEPTABLE FOR THAT OF A PADLOCK U - SHAPED MEMBER. A BRIDGING BAR W!LL BE USEG CONNECTABLE AND WILL ALIGN TO BOTH APERTURES, THE CONNECTING BAR IS PORTIONED AT ONE END AT TWICE ITS NORMAL DIAMETER TO PREVENT IT PASSING THROUGH BOTH MOUNTED MEMBER APERTURE PLUS THAT OF THE PIN APERTURES. THE OTHER END WILL PASS THROUGH BOTH MOUNTED MEMBER APERTURE AND THAT OF THE PIN APERTURE. AT THIS PENETRATING END IT WILL COMPRISE AN APERTURE THROUGH THE CENTRE OF THE BAR WHEREBY THE U - SHAPED MEMBER OF THE PADLOCK CAN BE PASSED THROUGH.THE CONNECTING BAR IS SECURED IN POSITION BY THE U - SHAPED MEMBER OF THE PADLOCK BEING MOUNTED ON THE EXTERNAL SIDE OF THE APERTURE THAT WILL PREVENT OPPOSITE MOVEMENT BACK INTO BOTH MOUNTED MEMBER APERTURE AND PIN APERTURE, TO FORM A SECURE MEMBER BETWEEN BOTH OF THESE APERTURES IT LINKS THEM AS ONE THUS DUPLICATING THE U - SHAPED MEMBER OF A PADLOCK.
THE MOUNTED BRACKET MEMBER ON THE SECURING PIN IS TO BE PIVOTED IN UNIVERSAL DIRECTIONS UNTIL ALIGNMENT IS RECIEVED WITH THE OUTER 1W1EMEBERS APERTURE TO THAT OF THE SECURED PIN APERTURE. SO TO PASS THROUGH THE ALIGNED APERTURES OF THE U SHAPED MEMBER OF THE PADLOCK WHICH WILL SECURE THEM TOGETHER AS ONE, THE PADLOCK U - SHAPED MEMBER AND BRIDGING BAR MAY BE FITTED IN ANY POSITION IN WHICH THE SECURING PIN HAS BEEN TIGHTENED TO. THE BRACKET MOUNTED ON THE U - SHAPED BODY OF THE SHACKLE OPERATES IN THE SAME WAY WITHOUT BEING ADJUSTABLE, THUS SECURING PIN MUST TIGHTEN FULLY IN ALIGNED POSITION TO ALIGN WITH BOTH APERTURES. IT IS MOUNTED ON THE SHACKLE BODY BY A CYLINDRICAL SLEEVE WHICH HOLDS IT IN PLACE.

REFERRING TO THE DRAWING OF THE SHACKLE BRACKET LOCK (8); THIS IS SECURED TO THE SHACKLE (9) BY THE SECURING PIN (7). THE BRACKET (8) HAS A PLATE FORMATION WITH HOLES IN EITHER SIDES OF THE BRACKET (8) WHICH HAS A SANDWICHING EFFECT ON THE SHACKLE BODY (9). WHICH THE SECURING PIN (7) , FITS INTO TO HOLD THE BRACKET (8) FIRM AND PARALLEL TO THE SECURING PIN (7) THE BRACKET (8) CAN BE LINED UP WITH THE HOLES ON THE SECURING PIN (7) IN ANY POSITION THE SECURING PIN (7) STOPS WHEN FULLY TIGHTENED, AT WHICH POINT A PADLOCK (6) MAY GO THROUGH BOTH HOLES AND SECURE THEM AS ONE.
BRACKET (11) OPERATES IN SIMILAR WAY BUT IS MOUNTED ON THE SHACKLE BODY (9) THEREBY BEING UNMANOUVERABL.E TO THE SECURING PIN (7) ONCE FULLY TIGHTENED. THUS SECURING PIN (7) MUST BE DESIGNED TO TIGHTEN IN THE SAME ALIGNED POSITION OF THAT OF BRACKET (11), SO THE HOLES CAN ALIGN FOR A PADLOCK (6) TO ENTER THROUGH.
IN ORDER TO OPERATE, THE SECURING PIN (7) IS FULLY REMOVED FROM THE SHACKLE (9) AND ANY CHAINS OR OBJECTS ARE FITTED TO THE SHACKLE BODY (9). THEN THE BRACKET (8) IS PLACED ON THE SHACKLE BODY (9) WITH THE HOLE FOR THE PADLOCK (6) POINTING OUT TOWARDS WHERE THE SECURING PIN (7) ENTERS. THE SECURING PIN (7) FITS THROUGH THE FIRST NON - THREADED PART OF THE SHACKLE BODY (9), THEN THROUGH THE BRACKET (8), THEN ANY OTHER CHAINS OR OBJECTS MAYBE FITTED ON THE SECURING PIN (7) AND THEN THE SECURING PIN (7) IS MOVED ACROSS TO THE SECOND THREADED PART OF THE SHACKLE BODY (S) WHERE IT IS SCREWED iN FULLY IN THE NORMAL WAY. WHEN THE BRACKET (8) AND SECURING PIN (7) HOLES MATCH IN ALIGNMENT, A PADLOCK (6) IS FITTED THROUGH THE HOLES OR, IF A PADLOCK IS NOT BIG ENOUGH A LOCKING PIN (4 0) CAN BE USED WITH A PADLOCK (6) TO SECURE THEM TOGETHER THROUGH THE HOLES.

Claims (4)

1. A shackle comprising a plurality of members engageable by complementary threaded formations to form a closed loop structure, and locking means connectable to at least one of the members to restrict disengaging movement of the members.
2. A shackle according to claim 1, in which a first one of the members is a locking pin, and a second one of the members is a shackle bodv member.
3. 4 and 5 of the accompanying drawings.
3. A shackle according to claim 2, in which: the locking pin comprises a locking apertures and the locking means comprises a sleeve for receiving the locking pin, the sleeve having an aperture connectable to the locking aperture of the locking pin.
4. A shackle according to claim 2. in which: the locking pin and the shackle body member comprise respective connectable locking apertures.

4. in which the shackle body member comprises an apertured sleevc.
6. A shackle according to any one of the preceding claims. in which the locking means comprises a padlock.
7. A shackie comprising a first memLer having a pair of apertures. and a s@cond member r@@@ivable in the pair of apertures to form a closed loop structure. one end or the second member having a limit stop larger than at least one of the pair of apertures. and the other end of the second member having an aperture for r@@eiving a padlock.
8. A snackle substantially as hereinbefore des@ribed with reference to Figures 1.
