Abstract

The two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent is a security device which has a cast body 1 into which one of a two wheeled vehicle's road wheels is positioned. Once the vehicle is positioned a security pin 2 is inserted through the spokes of the road wheel and locked into the cast body 1. A shackle 3 is then positioned around a suitable part of the vehicle's rolling chassis such as a front suspension unit and secured by means of a flexible locking device 4 such as a chain and padlock which is threaded under the security pin. The whole assembly is securely fixed to the ground by 'Shear head bolts' and expanding fasteners for application to concrete or hard surface and alternatively to a mounting post driven into the ground when used on soft surfaces. <IMAGE>

Description

TWO WHEELED VEHICLE THEFT DETERRENT This invention relates to a two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent A variety of two wheeled vehicle theft deterrents currently exist, many of which function by preventing rotation of one or both of the road wheels. Existing equipment includes chains and steel cables fastened with 'padlocks','D-bars'(D shaped shackles) and 'Snake locks' (steel cable encased in hardened steel flexible ball jointed collars). However, this method of security does not prevent the vehicle from being physically removed or loaded into a commercial vehicle with any security device still attached.
There is another type of security device which is permanently attached to the ground, this type is normally of tubular steel construction which is arranged to provide a framework within which one of the vehicle's wheels is positioned, once the vehicle is in place it is secured by means of a chain and padlock or similar flexible locking device entwined through the wheel's spokes. An improved version of this incorporates a steel pin which is positioned through the wheel and secured with a padlock. Thieves have overcome this type of device by removing the vehicle from the locked wheel, a replacement wheel being readily available. Also these devices are relatively easy to cut through with a hacksaw or disc grinder.
According to the present invention, there is provided a two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent comprising a base casting, a pin for releasably securing a two wheeled vehicle's road wheel within the base casting and a shackle which, when positioned around one or other of the vehicle's front suspension units, is attached to the base casting by a chain and padlock or similar device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a front and side elevation of the invention with a typical two wheeled vehicle front wheel arrangement in position.
Referring to the drawing, the security device comprises a body in the form of a base casting 1.
A hardened steel pin 2 with integral cylinder lock 5 providing a means of releasably securing the two wheeled vehicle's road wheel within the base casting 1. A shackle 3 which is positioned around the vehicle's front suspension unit and attached to the pin 2 by a flexible locking device 4 (chain cable or similar). The base casting 1 is secured to the ground by means of 'Shear head bolts' (not shown) and appropriate expanding fasteners for concrete applications.
For use on softer grounds a mounting plate welded to a metal post of suitable length (not shown) is driven into the earth to provide a secure mounting for the base casting, 'Shear head bolts' again being employed to prevent removal of the base casting.
In order to remove the two wheeled vehicle from the security device the pin 2 is unlocked and withdrawn in the direction of arrow 6. The shackle 3 is then detached by unlocking and removing the flexible locking device 4. Once dismantled in this manner the cycle can be removed and the theft deterrent reassembled to prevent loss of component parts.

Claims (6)

  1. TWO WHEELED VEHICLE THEFT DETERRENT 1 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent comprising a body in the form of a casting. A security pin providing means for releasably securing one or other of a two wheeled vehicle's road wheels within the body of the casting. A shackle for securing the front suspension unit or any other part of a two wheeled vehicle's rolling chassis to the base casting by means of a chain or cable with padlock or similar device. A mounting post to provide secure attachment for the cast body when used on soft ground.
  2. 2 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cast body provides a recess to accept the extended 'bolt' of the cylinder lock and therefore securely locking the pin within the cast body.
  3. 3 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the cast body provides a substantially hardened end cap to prevent attack by power drills or similar, situated in line with the security pin on the outer face of the cast body on the opposite side to that which through the security pin is installed.
  4. 4 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent as claimed previously wherein the security pin has provision for housing a 'cylinder' lock integrally providing means to allow the extension of the 'bolt' through the side wall of the pin and into the recess in the cast body as in claim 2.
  5. 5 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent as claimed previously wherein the cast body is secured to the ground or mounting post by shear head bolts.
  6. 6 A two wheeled vehicle theft deterrent substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
