Description
2310839 Motorcycle wheel lock The present invention relates to a locking
device, and more particularly to a device for locking motorcycle wheels.
A great many devices have been proposed for securing a motorcycle so as to prevent its theft.
A typical means for immobilising a motorcycle is to prevent the rotation of one or other of its wheels. Existing wheel locking devices such as chains or U-locks tend to be cumbersome and unwieldy, and when not in place must somehow be carried by the rider or secured to the motorcycle structure.
1 have now devised a device which overcomes the above mentioned limitations of existing motorcycle wheel locks.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a motorcycle wheel lock for securing to a fixed part of a motorcycle structure, and comprising a pin or other projection for lockably engaging within or passing through an aperture of a ventilated brake disc of the motorcycle. Preferably said pin or other projection is inserted and retracted from said disc aperture either manually or remotely via an electrical mechanism. 20 In the case of manual operation, said pin or other projection may be locked in place by means of a key operated mechanism. Also it is preferable that the entire projection and locking assembly is removable so as to preclude any interference between the pin and the brake disc during normal operation.
Preferably the lock may be adjusted so as to allow the projection to be aligned with respect to corresponding apertures of an arbitrary disc ventilation arrangement.
In a first preferred embodiment the lock comprises an extension to a disc brake calliper.
In a second preferred embodiment, the lock comprises a bracket for fixing to a part of the motorcycle structure.
Preferably locking device is made more secure by locating the exposed end of the projection within a recess or aperture formed within an extended portion of the fixing bracket or of the disc brake calliper, that portion lying 2 adjacent the opposite face of the brake disc to that from which the projection originates.
Preferably the lock is arranged such that the exposed end of the projection is inaccessible.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of examples only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a side elevation of a wheel lock in accordance with a first embodiment of the present invention shown in situ upon a motorcycle wheel assembly; FIGURES 2 and 3 are rear elevations of the lock of FIGURE 1 shown unlocked and locked respectively; FIGURE 4 is a side elevation of a wheel lock in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention; and FIGURE 5 is a rear elevation of an electrically operated wheel lock.
FIGURE 6 is a rear elevation of a more secure electrically operated wheel lock than that of Figure 5.
Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings, there is shown a motorcycle wheel lock, in situ upon a motor cycle wheel assembly 10, and comprising a bracket 12 and locking pin mechanism 14.
Bracket 12 is attached to the brake calliper 15 and fork 16 of the motorcycle by means of projecting arms 18 and 20, secured at points 22 and 24 respectively, and is shaped to hold locking pin mechanism 14 at an appropriate distance from the surface of the ventilated brake disc 26. In order to align the locking pin mechanism 14 with one of the plurality of brake disc apertures 28, the mechanism may be adjusted by sliding it along a track 30, provided in bracket 12.
Figures 2 and 3 are rear elevations of the arrangement of Figure 1 and illustrate in more detail the locking pin mechanism 14 held adjacent the surface of brake disc 26 by means of bracket 12.
Mechanism 14 can be seen to comprise a casing or sleeve 32 within which a barrel 34 may be inserted or slid so as to cause the pin 36 to project through an aperture in the brake disc 26. The barrel may then locked in place by turning a key 3 38 which is subsequently removed. Barrel 34 is preferably sprung so that when not engaged, the force of the spring holds the pin in a retracted position, thereby ensuring that it does not inadvertently interfere with the brake disc.
Figures 4 and 5 illustrate, as a side and rear elevation respectively, a second embodiment of the present invention in which the need for a fixing bracket is obviated by mounting the locking pin mechanism 14 upon an extended brake calliper 15. Also, in this embodiment the locking pin mechanism 14 is shown as an electrical arrangement which may be remotely operated via an electrical cable 40. In this case, an solenoid arrangement would cause the pin 36 to extend or retract as required.
Figure 6 is a rear elevation illustrating an alternative arrangement to that of Figure 5, wherein the projecting end of pin 36 is located within a further extended portion 42 of calliper 15 which lies adjacent the opposite face of brake disc 26 to that from which the pin originates.
It would also remain in accordance with the present invention, to form a similar arrangement to that of Figure 6 by extending the bracket of Figures 1 to 3 so as to provide a bracket portion adjacent each brake disc surface.
4 claims 1) A motorcycle wheel lock for securing to a fixed part of a motorcycle structure, and comprising a projection for lockably engaging within an aperture of a ventilated brake disc 5 of the motorcycle.
2) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in claim 1, wherein the projection comprises a pin.

5) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim, comprising a key operated mechanism for locking the projection in engagement with the disc aperture.
6) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the projection is spring-biassed intoits retracted position.
7) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the projection is removable from the lock.
8) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim, comprising means for allowing the position ofthe projection to be adjusted.
9) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the projection is arranged to pass through said disc aperture.
10) A motorcycle wheel comprising an extended portion having a recess or aperture for lock as claimed in claim 9, receiving the outer end of the projection extending through the disc aperture.
11) A motorcycle wheel lock as claimed in any preceding claim comprising a bracket for fitting to the fixed part of the 5 motorcycle structure.
