Abstract
A body and back support 10 comprises a frame 12, eg of aluminium members, encapsulated in a plastics material such as polystyrene foam. The frame has a heating tape wound around its parts, the tape terminating in a plug. Alternatively the frame may have a plate like member attached thereto [figs 3 and 4 not shown], the plate being provided with heating elements and thermostatic control. <IMAGE>
Description
Bodv and Back supPort The present invention relates to a body and back support.
It is well known that in the treatment of patients suffering from any pains in the back for what ever reason eg. strain or slipped disc it is necessary for the patient to be firmly supported.
Usually at least a very firm support for example in the form of an orthopaedic mattress is recommended. Such mattresses are very firm and only yield slightly to the weight of the patient.
However, over a period of time even such mattress acquire a permanent deformation.
In hospitals the need for such firm mattresses in the treatment of patients with back problems is obvious. However such mattresses are frequently incorporated into beds and are heavy and cumbersome to manoeuvre. Even if such mattresses are separate from a bed frame they still remain difficult and weighty to manoeuvre.
The present invention seeks to provide a body and back support which is relatively light in weight is readily manoeuvrable and can be placed upon an existing mattress.
The present invention further seeks to provide a body and back support which is not subject to any substantial permanent deformation.
The present invention further seeks to provide a back and body support incorporating heating means to allow heat to be imparted to a patient or user.
Accordingly the present invention provides a body and back support comprising a relatively rigid frame encapsulated within a covering of plastics material, the support being provided with heating means.
The frame can comprise a box frame made from aluminium or light alloy sections. The sections can be hollow and rectangular or tubular in form.
The plastics material can comprise an anti-static polystyrene, the resilience of which can be adjusted depending upon the type of materials used for encapsulation.
The heating means can comprise a heating tape which is wrapped around the frame prior to encapsulation.
Alternatively, the heating means can comprise one or more electric heating panels secured to the frame. The panel or panels can take the form of an aluminium plate, or plates incorporating electric heating elements, eg of the type known as
HEAT TRACE (Trade Mark).
The frame can be covered by the encapsulating material of approximately 1" thickness all over.
The body and back support can be single, double or king sized or any appropriate size as required.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of one form of back and body support according to the present invention;
Figure 2 illustrates the frame of the back and body support shown in figure 1,
Figure 3 is a plan view of a further embodiment of the invention; and
Figure 4 is a section on line A-A in Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a back and body support (10) comprising a frame (12) encapsulated within a plastics material (14). The frame (12) (see figure 2) is a box frame having sides (12A), ends (12B) and cross braces (12C) which define a number of open boxes (12D). Typically the sides (12A), ends (12B) and braces (12C) are approximately li" deep. The length and width of the sides, ends and cross braces are chosen to suit the ultimate size of the support required eg. single double or king size.
A heating tape is wrapped around the sides (12A), ends (12B) and cross braces (12C) and the free end of the tape terminates in a plug or socket (18) so that the mains power can be supplied to the heating tape.
In an alternative arrangement as described with reference to Figs 3 and 4, the heating can be provided by one or more electric heating panels secured to the frame.
A thermostat (20) is provided to enable the temperature of the support to be adjusted and maintained.
The frame (12) is encapsulated in a coating of a plastics material having a covering thickness of approximately 1". It will be appreciated that the plastics material also fills the boxes (12D).
Referring to figures 3 and 4 there is shown a body and back support (110) comprising a frame (112) encapsulated within a plastics material (114). The frame (112) is formed from aluminium tubing comprising an outer generally rectangular frame portion (112A) and cross braces (112B).
An aluminium plate (116) is located on top of the frame (112).
The plate (116) is provided with electrical heating elements and thermostat control (not shown). For example the heating elements and control can be of the type known as Heat Trace.
The plastics material can be polystyrene foam known as PLASTAZOTE (Trade Mark), the resilience of which can be varied by choice of materials and or manufacturing process. The polystyrene foam is anti-static and so does not attract dirt, dust and other undesirable materials. Alternatively, the plastics material can be a foam known as EVAZOTE (Trade Mark).
It will be appreciated that the support illustrated and described above will be relatively light in weight and can be easily manoeuvred by two people or even one person. The support can be placed upon a bed or a floor if required with relative ease and the patient can lie upon the support which will act as an orthopaedic mattress.
The support will have a little resilience but will not be subjected to any substantial permanent deformation.
Importantly the patient can receive heat from the support by means of a electric heating strip (16) or the heated plate (116).
It has been found that the temperature from the point of view of patient comfort should not exceed body temperature and therefore the thermostat can be adjusted so that the temperature at the surface of the support is approximately equal to body temperature.
The patient can therefore be supported in the most advantageous manner and also receive the benefits of heat.
