Abstract

A data carrier in the form of a transponder 3 is fitted to the protected foot or base region of each container 1. The transponders 3 are interrogated by radio waves by means of a flat bed antenna 5. The antenna 5 may be integrated into a mat 4 over which the containers 1 are passed during loading into a pallet 2. Alternatively, the pallet 2 may have a grid base (8, Fig. 2) which can be placed over a plate (9) in which the antenna 5 is integrated. The plate (9) may incorporate a plurality of individual antennas to interrogate all of the containers in the pallet simultaneously. <IMAGE>

Description

2288712 System for machine-readable identification of containers The
invention relates to a system f or machinereadable identification of containers for the transportation of compressed gases or chemicals according to the
precharacterizing clause of Claim 1.
Some portable containers for the transportation of compressed gases or chemicals are subject to major legal test instructions and marking instructions. The recording, tracking and modification of the data are predominantly carried out manually and the cost of this is accordingly high. The data which are to be traced essentially include the marking of the contents and statements on the owner, container number, recurrent tests, safety and hazard instructions, and the filling capacity. This information can intrinsically be stored with the aid of machine- readable data carriers such as memory chips, bar code or magnetic strips, and can be interrogated as required, as, for example, US Patent Specifications 5 008 661 and 4 364 043 show. The use of this technology for containers for the transportation of compressed gases or chemicals presents considerable difficulties, however. On the one hand, these relate to the secure fitting of the data carrier on the container so that it can be directly subjected to rugged practical use, particularly during transportation as well. On the other hand, the reading apparatus for entering and reading the data must be taken to the data carriers, which is relatively complicated. The data carriers must therefore be fitted at a particularly easily accessible point on the container and are thus particularly susceptible to becoming dirty and being disturbed.
The invention is thus based on the object of creating a system for machine -readable identification and is recording of containers for the transportation of compressed gases or chemicals, which system can be directly subjected to rugged practical use and has no special requirements for taking the reading apparatus to it.
On the basis of the prior art considered in the precharacterizing clause of Claim 1, this object is achieved according to the invention by the features specified in the characterizing part of Claim 1. Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in the subclaims. 25 According to the invention, the machine-readable data carrier is fitted at a point on the container which is particularly inaccessible and protected, namely in the base region. As a rule, the base region is well protected by its concave design, foot rings, a f ramework and the like. This point for the attachment of a data carrier is admittedly inaccessible for commercially available reading apparatuses. However, these difficulties do not occur with the use, according to the invention, of radiofrequency technology in an identification system which operates without making contact. The data carrier is in this case designed as a transponder and the data are transmitted by radio-frequency radio waves, by means of an antenna having a connected reading unit. In the case of this system, the transponder is activated by an energy i pulse originating from the antenna, and transmits the stored data via the antenna to the reading unit. According to the invention, the antenna, which is composed of a plurality of individual antennas as a rule, is designed as a flat bed antenna and is integrated, for example, in a mat or plate. This makes it possible to activate the data carrier from below while moving over the antenna or while being placed on the flat bed antenna.
A disadvantage of the identification systems which operate without making contact and are based on radio-frequency technology is the relatively short permissible reading distance. in the case of the arrangement according to the invention of the transponder in the f oot region of the container, and in the case of the is antenna being designed as a flat bed antenna over which the container is pushed or on which the container is placed, the reading distance is extremely short, so that it causes no difficulties whatsoever.
Further advantages are that the data carrier can be attached by means of cost-effective connecting techniques, for example bonding. The invention is particularly advantageous when calling up stored information from compressed gas containers which are held together in pallets. The information can be called up simultaneously by placing the pallet onto a stationary reading area made of one or more flat bed antennas. The base of the pallet is preferably designed as a grid base, for this purpose. The information is read automatically while the compressed gas containers are being palletized and removed from the pallets, if they are moved over the reading area. The flat bed antenna is thus preferably designed to be mobile by being integrated in a portable plate or mat.
A further advantage of the invention is that reading and writing errors, which can represent a con- siderable difficulty when using radio-frequency systems, are reliably avoided since the transmitter and receiver are located in a Faraday cage in the case of containers made of metallic materials. Thus they can neither be influenced by external interference pulses nor do they emit stray radiation outwards.
Two exemplary embodiments of the invention are intended to be explained with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows the identification of compressed gas cylin- ders whose data are detected while being placed in a pallet, Fig. 2 shows the identification of compressed gas cylin- ders which are located in a pallet.
Figure 1 shows compressed gas cylinders 1 which are arranged and transported in a pallet 2. According to the invention, a data carrier 3, which is designed as a transponder, is fitted to the foot of each compressed gas cylinder 1. While being inserted into the pallet 2, the compressed gas cylinders are moved over a mat 4. According to the invention, a flat bed antenna 5 is integrated in this mat 4. Thus, while the compressed gas cylinders 1 are being moved over the mat 4, the data which are stored in the data carrier (transponder) are called up and passed to the reading unit. The automatic reading process is indicated by the arrow 6, and data acquisition by the arrow 7. In the case of the exemplary embodiment which is illustrated In Figure 2, the compressed gas cylinders 1 are located in a pallet 8 which has a grid base. A plate 9, in which, according to the invention, a flat bed antenna 5 is integrated, is arranged under the grid base. in the case of this embodiment, the flat bed antenna preferably comprises a plurality of individual antennas, so that the data of all the compressed gas cylinders 1 located on the pallet 8 can be detected simultaneously.
