Abstract

A corner joint is formed in a window or door frame, especially a frame for a patio door, by a corner moulding (16) which is screw fixed in position between two extruded lengths of frame profile (10, 10A) having end faces cut at 45 degrees, the corner moulding having a portion with edges matching the external shape of the profile but closer together, so that a groove angled at 45 degrees is produced on each of the side faces of the assembled corner. <IMAGE>

Description

Corner Joint for Window and Door Frames This invention relates generally to window and door frames made of lengths of extruded plastics profile joined at the frame corners, and in particular to means by which the lengths of profile are so joined at the frame corners.
It is common practice in the manufacture of window and door frames made of lengths of extruded plastics profile to join the lengths at the frame corners by plastics welding. Typically, after the weld has been produced, a cutting tool is moved across the line of the weld on both sides thereof, not only to remove burrs but also to cut into the profile material so as to produce aesthetically pleasing grooves. Normally, the ends of the lengths of plastics profile are cut at 45 degrees prior to welding.
The completed corner joint thus has a groove angled at 45 degrees in each of the side faces of the welded lengths of plastics profile.
The aesthetically pleasing grooves are not so readily produced if the lengths of plastics profile are to be mechanically assembled at the corners, and especially so if the side faces of the profiles do not lie wholly in single planes, as may be the case if the side faces have angled or "bevelled" portions, which may also be considered to be an aesthetically attractive feature.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a window or door frame made of lengths of extruded plastics profile joined at the frame corners, wherein, at each corner, two lengths of profile having end faces cut at 45 degrees are mechanically assembled via an intervening corner moulding having a portion which has edges of the same external shape as the edges of the end faces of the profile and closer together than said edges of the end faces, thereby to produce a groove angled at 45 degrees in each of the side faces of the assembled corner.
Preferably the corner joint, including the corner moulding, is effected by means of securing screws.
The frame-forming plastics profile is preferably extruded with a hollow cross-section, the corner moulding also being formed with leg portions extending mutually at right angles and engaging into the hollow cross-section when two profile lengths are assembled with the corner moulding to form a corner joint.
According to another aspect of the invention, therefore, there is provided a corner moulding for use in interconnecting at right angles the lengths of extruded plastics profile at the corner of a window or door frame, the end faces of the profile lengths being cut at 45 degrees, said corner moulding comprising two leg portions extending mutually at right angles in order to engage into the hollow cross-section of the two profile lengths, and a laterally protruding flange portion lying in the plane bisecting the leg portions in order to intervene between the two 45 degrees cut end faces of the profile lengths.
The invention is especially useful in relation to extruded profile lengths which have an angled or "bevelled" portion on either one or both of the exterior side faces of the profile, typically connecting a thicker part of the profile to a thinner part. In this case, at least one of the edges of the flange portion of the corner moulding, which follow the contour of the edges of the 45 degrees cut end faces of the profile lengths, will include a sloping portion.
The screw connections at the corner joint are preferably effected by screws connecting each of the two profile lengths to the corner moulding. All the screws preferably insert in parallel directions. Thus, two screws may engage through the flange of the corner moulding into screw receptors provided in one extruded profile length, and two screws may engage through the wall of the other profile length into screw receptors formed on the corresponding leg portion of the corner moulding which engages into said other profile length.
A corner joint and corner joint moulding therefor in accordance with the invention are now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of the parts forming a corner joint, in this instance a corner joint in a main frame for a patio door; and Figure 2 shows the completed joint diagrammatically, the corner moulding being shown in dashed lines.
In Figure 1 are shown the end portions of two lengths of UPVC extruded profile 10, 1OA,the end faces thereof having been cut at 45 degrees in readiness for producing the corner joint. The extruded profiles are identical, and include a hollow region 12, 12A of rectangular cros- section. Adjacent the hollow region the profile is formed with screwhole receptors 14.
Figure 1 also shows a corner moulding 16. This element has two leg portions 18, 18A extending mutually at right angles, and a U-shaped flange portion 20 lying in the plane bisecting the right angle between the leg portions.
The leg portions are formed with slotted screw receptors 22 and the flange has holes 24 (one hidden in the drawing) for passage of screws.
The arrows 26 indicate the manner of assembly of the corner joint. Leg 18 of the moulding engages into hollow region 12 of profile length 10 and is joined therewith by means of a screw passed through holes 24 and screwing into receptors 14. Leg 18A engages into the hollow region 12A of the profile length 10A and screws are passed through the wall 26 of the profile to screw into receptor slots 22. Items 28 formed on the moulding constitute supplementary locators. Preferably, a unitary joint is ensured by bonding abutting faces of the parts with plastics adhesive.
The illustrated profile has exterior side faces which include sloping portions 30 connecting a thicker portion of the profile with a thinner portion. The side edges 32 of the flange 20 of the corner moulding 16 follow the contour of the outside edges 34 of the 45 degrees cut end faces of the profile lengths 10, lOA. However, the spacing between the side edges 32 is slightly less than the spacing between the outside edges 34, i.e. slightly less than the thickness of the profile.
Thus, when assembly of the corner joint is completed, as shown in Figure 2, the corner moulding 16 shown in dashed lines defines grooves 36 angled at 45 degrees in each of the side faces of the corner joint, simulating the effect conventionally achieved with a cleaning and grooving tool in the case of a welded joint. Other references marked in Figure 2 correspond to those employed in Figure 1.
Various modifications of the above-described arrangement are possible within the scope of the invention. More especially, application of the invention is not restricted to main frames for patio doors, nor even to the profiles having angled or "bevelled" side face portions, although it is in this case that the invention has particular advantage, as heretofore mentioned.
