Abstract

228,780. Knight, G. T. July 5, 1924. Balusters and hand-rails. - A baluster and railing structure, comprising a main baluster 11, auxiliary balusters 36, upper and lower railings 34, 35 and a false post 33, is built up from a number of separable elements that are readily assembled or taken down. The main baluster 11 comprises vertical boards with mitred edges keyed together and re. ceived with a socket 14 similarly constructed from mitred boards 17 and a frame 15. The top 20 of the baluster receives the screwed rod 25 of a hooked rod 22, the hook engaging one of a number of holes 23<a> in a floor-board to secure the baluster in a vertical position. The wing-nut 26 engaging the rod is covered by a board 30 spaced from the baluster by a frame 29. The railings comprise a core 37 having vertical pockets at intervals to receive the upper and lower ends of the auxiliary balusters 36, these ends being dovetailed into recessed side members 41 that are secured to the core 37. A flat board 34 is secured to the upper surface of the upper railing. The railings are secured to the main baluster by easily removable brackets 54 and to the false post 33 by screws. In constructing the portion of the railings that ail off the stairs the ends of the auxiliary balusters and railings are cut at suitable angles.
