Abstract
A car radio safe (3) is provided with a lockable door (3b), and with shear bolts (4) for fixing the safe to an inside car panel member (2). <IMAGE>
Description
CAR RADIO SAFE
This invention relates to a car safe, and in particular to a car radio safe.
A major contribution to the rise in the crime rate is the theft of valuables, such as car radios, from motor vehicles. The aim of the invention is to provide apparatus for holding such valuables within a motor vehicle in a manner that substantially reduces the risk of theft.
The present invention provides means for housing valuables inside a motor vehicle, the means comprising a safe provided with a lockable door, and means for fixing the safe to an inside car panel member.
Advantageously, the door is hinged to the safe by hinges which are completely internal when the door is locked. Preferably, the door is locked to the safe by means of a combination lock or by a key-operated lock.
In a preferred embodiment, the safe is fixed to said car panel member by means of shear bolts. Preferably, the car panel member is the floor pan of the car or the floor pan of the boot.
A car radio safe constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation of a car front seat and
the safe; and
FIG. 2 is a front elevation of the arrangement shown
in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the figures show the front seat 1 of a motor car, the seat being fixed to the floor pan 2 of the car. A safe 3 is fixed to the floor pan 2 beneath the seat by means of shear bolts 4. (Shear bolts are bolts whose heads shear off when they are subjected to torque forces after their threaded shanks have been fully screwed in. It is, therefore, extremely difficult to remove such shear bolts once their heads have been sheared off, there being nothing for a tool such as a spanner or mole wrench to grip).
The safe 3 is a box 3a made of steel, the box being provided with a door 3b attached thereto by a hinge 5. The door 3b can be locked to the box 3a by means of a lock 6 which may be a combination lock or a key-operated lock. The hinge 5 is an internal hinge so that, when the door 3b is locked to the box 3a, the hinge is not accessible to a would-be thief. The box measures 80mm x 180mm x 200mm, and so is sized to receive a standard car radio (or other form of in-car entertainment such as a radio/cassette player or a radio/CD player). Thus, when the car is parked, the radio can be removed from its normal seating in the dashboard and placed inside the safe 3. The safe 3 can then be locked by the owner prior to the car being locked and left in a parked position. Thus, if the car is broken into, it is extremely difficult for a would-be thief to steal the radio. More importantly, however, a thief may even decide against breaking into the car, as it would be apparent from a cursory inspection that there was no readily-accessible radio to steal. The safe 3 is, therefore, a disincentive to the car being broken into.
It will be apparent that modifications could be made to the safe/arrangement described above. For example, the safe 3 could be fixed to the car in any other suitable position, for example in the boot. It would, of course, also be possible to put valuables other than a car radio in the safe when the car is to be parked or left unattended.
Claims (6)
1. Means for housing valuables inside a motor vehicle, the means comprising a safe provided with a lockable door, and means for fixing the safe to an inside car panel member.
2. Housing means as claimed in claim 1, wherein the door is hinged to the safe by hinges which are completely internal when the door is locked.
3. Housing means as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the door is locked to the safe by means of a combination lock or by a key-operated lock.
4. Housing means as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the safe is fixed to said car panel member by means of shear bolts.
5. Housing means as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the car panel member is the floor pan of the car or the floor pan of the boot.
6. A car radio safe substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated by, the accompanying drawings.
