Abstract

A lamp, e.g. a table lamp, has a body 1 on which is mounted a lamp holder 5 and a hologram 2. A light source, in the form of a filament lamp 7, is mounted on the lamp holder 5 and a lamp shade 4 is mounted to the lamp holder 5 by means of a bracket 6. A mirror 3 is mounted to the inside of the lamp shade 4 at an angle 8. The lamp base 1 has an upward taper at an angle 10 which, in conjunction with the angle 8 of the mirror 3, ensures that light, emitted from the light source 7 and redirected by the mirror 3, will strike the hologram 2 at a mean angle of incidence 9, which is the optimum angle at which light should strike the hologram for its recorded three dimensional image to reconstruct. <IMAGE>

Description

INTEGRATED TABLE LAMP AND HOLOGRAM DISPLAY UNIT This invention relates to a table lamp modified so as to accommodate a hologram by way of decoration.
Table lamps are well known furnishings of a functional nature.
Holograms are eye catching three dimensional imayes, recorded on a film or plate, which require illumination from a point source at a specific angle of incidence. These lighting requirements have severely restricted the utilization and growth of holography. The purpose of this invention is to make available the aesthetic qualities of holography in a functional, integrated unit, which does not require specialist installation.
According to the present invention, a lamp comprises a lamp body having a light source mounted thereon, a lamp shade substantially surrounding the light source, a reflector mounted within the lamp shade, and a hologram mounted to the lamK body, the arrangement being such that light emitted from the light source and striking the reflector is directed onto the hologram at the required angle of incidence for the hologram to reveal it's three dimensional effect.
A plurality of holograms may be mounted to the lamp body, preferably each having its respective reflector to afford illumination from the correct incidence direction.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the lamp unit with the shade cut away to enable illustration of the light path.
Figure 2 is a front elevation showing the lamp unit, with the shade cut away to reveal it's supports, and illustratiny the position of both hologram and reflector.
Referring to the drawings, the lamp unit comprises a base 1 on which is mounted a hologram 2 and a lamp holder 5. The lamp holder 5 provides a mounting for a frame 6, which supports a shade 4, and a filament lamp 7. A mirror 3, which reflects light from the filament lamp 7 onto the hologram 2, is mounted to the inside of the shade 4. The path of light from the lamp 7 to the hologram 2 is illustrated in figure 1 hy broken lines.
Referring to figure 1 the arrangement of the shade 4 and the mirror 3 is such as to bring light to the hologram at an angle of incidence 9.
The hologram 2 is mounted on an upwardly tapering base 1 where the angle of taper 10 and the position of the mirror 3 are such as to ensure the correct incidence angle 9.
While the lamp described has an upwardly tapered body and supprorts the hologram below the lamp shade for use as a table lamp, it is forseen that the provision of concealed reflector within a lampshade to direct light on to a hologram is applicable to other types of light fittings.
For example, wall mounted "uplighters" or "wall wash" type lamps may incorporate reflectors to direct light on to holograms mounted to the wall above the lamp, the wall fitment may include both a reflector and a hologram mounting.

Claims (5)

1 An integrated table lamp and hologram display unit comprising a lamp body having a light source mounted thereon, a lamp shade substantially surrounding the light source, a reflector mounted within the lamp shade, and a hologram mounted to the lamp body, the arrangement being such that light emitted from the light source and striking the reflector is directed onto the hologram at the required angle of incidence for the hologram to reveal it's three dimensional effect.
2 An integrated table lamp and hologram display unit as claimed in Claim 1, having a plurality of holograms mounted to the lamp base.
3 An integrated table lamp and hologram display unit as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, having a plurality of mirrors mounted within the lamp shade.
4 An integrated lamp and hologram display unit as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein the lamp body is adapted so as to allow mounting to a wall or surface other than a table top.
5 An integrated table lamp and hologram display unit substantantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1-2 of the accompanying drawing.
