UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,575,327 3/1926 Garford et a1. 240/46.55 X 1 Claim, 2 Drawing Figures PARABOLIC SPOTLIGHT FIXTURE HAVING ROTATABLE LAMP HOLDER Spotlights employing parabolic reflectors and in which a lamp is positioned in front of the reflector, require part silvered lamps, which are expensive items.
The present invention relates to an improved spotlight construction, in which standard service lamps can be employed.
More specifically, the invention provides a spotlight fitting comprising a main parabolic reflector, a lampholder whose axis extends transversely of the reflector to position a lamp in front of the reflector, an auxiliary reflector mounted on the front of the fitting to conceal the lamp filament and having a concave rear reflector surface for reflecting forwardly projecting light rays back on to the parabolic reflector, and means for rotating the lamp-holder about its own axis. The rotary mounting of the lamp-holder makes it possible to adjust the orientation of the lamp filament, relative to the reflectors, and thereby obtain an optimum lighting effect from a standard service lamp.
One form of spotlight in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front elevation of the spotlight;
FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation.
The spotlight comprises a parabolic reflector l (preferably die-cast), one radially extending peripheral portion 2 of which is recessed or offset to receive a lampholder 3. A cover member 4 is secured to the body of the reflector by fixing screws 6, to form with the reflector portion 2 a generally cylindrical housing for the lampholder, which is retained in the housing by means of a mounting bracket 7 secured to the base of the lamp holder and which bracket is secured to the cover member 4 by a thumb-screw 8. This screw is engaged in a threaded hole in the bracket and extends outwardly through a circumferentially extended slot 9 in the cover member 4, thus permitting rotation of the bracket and lampholder about the axis 10 of the lampholder, relative to reflector 1. This adjustability permits focussing of a lamp filament by varying its orientation relative to the reflector 1.
A cable entry gland assembly 11 extends through transverse end walls 1 and 4 of the reflector and cover member and also provides a pivotal attachment for a mounting bracket B.
Removably secured to the cover member 4 is an auxiliary reflector 12 (conveniently formed as a diecasting), the main reflecting surface 13 of which is concave, generally part-spherical form so as to conform closely to the globe of a standard service lamp shown in phantom line at L. The auxiliary reflector thus serves in use to reflect any forwardly directed light rays rearwardly onto the parabolic reflector. This function is, of course, normally carried out by the part silvering on special purpose lamps normally required for parabolic reflector spotlights. Thus the spotlight of the present invention is adapted for use with standard service lamps, which are much cheaper than part silvered spotlight lamps.
The releasable attachment of the auxiliary reflector is conveniently, effected in this embodiment with the aid of a thumbscrew l4, threadedly engaged in a radially extending tongue 15 of the auxiliary reflector which is engaged in a corresponding slot 16 in the cover member 4. The auxiliary reflector is simply secured by tightening the screw 14 to engage against the cover member adjacent the end of slot 16.
The auxiliary reflector is thus readily released to facilitate insertion and removal of lamps L and resecured in its proper position relative to the parabolic reflector 1.
I claim:
1. A spotlight fitting for use with a standard unsilvered service lamp comprising a main parabolic reflector, lamp holder means having its axis extending in a direction transversely of the reflector for positioning a lamp supported in said holder means in front of said main reflector, auxiliary reflector means having a concave rear reflector surface, said auxiliary reflector means being mounted on said fitting and disposed forwardly of said holder for concealing the filament of a lamp positioned in said holder and reflecting forwardly projected light rays back into the main reflector, and adjustment means interposed between said main reflector and said lamp holder supporting said lamp holder for rotation about its own axis relative to said main reflector to enable variation of the orientation of the filament of a lamp in said holder relative to said main reflector.
