Abstract
A jointing system comprises a male plastics undercut extrusion screwed to an upright, and a female plastics undercut extrusion screwed to the end of a shelf. To form a secure joint the female extrusion is simply slid on to the male extrusion, and optionally secured by a plastic solvent cement. The ends of the extrusions may be concealed by inserting a cap into the end of a cavity defined between the extrusions. Each extrusion may include overlapping edges to enclose the sawn ends of the shelf. <IMAGE>

SLIDE ASSEMBLY JOINTING SYSTEM
This invention relates to a slide assembly jointing system.
Most methods of fixing one piece of timber or similar material to another requires one of the following methods of fastening:
a joint section cut into either or both of the
joining members or
holes drilled through the face of one or more members to
accept screws or
the use of dowels or
the fixing of wood, metal or plastic brackets or blocks
to either or both of the joining members.
The shaping of the material to form a joint or the use of dowels requires great skill and precision and the other methods remain visible and unsightly.
This invention provides precision joints using minimum skills. The invention can and will be manufactured in a variety of sizes to fit a wide range of construction material dimensions. A feature of the system is that the invention permits both permanent and semi permanent fixings.
The invention consists of two moulded sections forming one male and one female section which when slid together form a permanent or semi permanent joint.
The strip is capable of being manufactured in any number of dimensions and materials for application on a variety of construction materials.
A specific embodiment of the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings as follows:
Fig 1 shows in perspective the female moulded section of the joint
Fig 2 shows the male section of the moulded section of the joint
Fig 3 shows the two sections assembled
Fig 4 shows the male section fixed to upright
Fig 5 shows the female section fixed to second timber end section
Fig 6 shows the assembly fixed in place wih the end cover being inserted to hide the joint sections and screws
The two joint sections may be disassembled by sliding apart or where a permanet fixing is required a plastic solvent cement may be applied to either or both the female and male sections to provide a permant fixing.
The application of the invention includes but is not limited to the joining of two or more sections as a box joint at the extreme edge of the sections to be joined or at any part of the section with variants for both right angle and other joining angles. Either of the two moulded sections may include an overlap to cover the sawn ends of plastic coated board to cover chips or faults in the plastic coating produced as a result of cutting. (Fig 7)
Claims (12)
- CLAIMS: 1. A jointing system comprising a first elongate member of constant cross-section for securing to a first element to be joined, a second elongate member for securing to a second element to be joined and having a cross-section arranged for sliding, interlocking engagement with the first member.
- 2. A system as claimed in claim 1, in which the first member is a female member and the second member is a male member.
- 3. A system as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which each member is formed with co-operating undercut surfaces.
- 4. A system as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, in which the first and second members, when inter-engaged, together define an internal cavity.
- 5. A system as claimed in claim 4 and further comprising at least one end cap comprising engagement means for engagement in an end of the cavity.
- 6. A system as claimed in any preceding claim, in which each member is formed with a groove to accommodate the heads of screws by which it is secured to a respective element.
- 7. A system as claimed in any preceding claim, in which each member includes an overlap at its base to conceal the adjacent marginal portions of the element to which it is secured.
- 8. A system as claimed in claim 1 and substantially as hereinbefore described.
- 9. A jointing system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
- 10. An assembly comprising a jointing system as claimed in any preceding claim in which said first and second members are inter-engaged and are each secured to a respective element.
- 11. An assembly as claimed in claim 10 in which the members are adhered together.
- 12. The features herein described, or their equivalent in any patentable, novel selection.
