Abstract

The kit comprises a plastic covered metallic board 5, magnetic figures 8 and printed stickers 7. The board can be hung on a wall or other surface. The kit presents a means of influencing desirable child behaviour without resorting to physical or verbal aggression towards the child. It is of educational value, it establishes clear guidelines regarding expected behaviours, while providing opportunity for mutually enjoyable caretaker-child activities. <IMAGE>

Description

CHILD BEHAVIOUR KIT This invention refers to a child behaviour kit.
The child behaviour kit is based on the assumptions of the psychological theory of operant/instrumental conditioning in which rewards (positive reinforcement) are given for desirable behaviours. Although there are many methods in use for rewarding desirable behaviours and punishing undesirable behaviours in children, there is the possibility of inconsistency on the part of the caretaker and confusion as to expected behaviours on the part of the child.
The present invention avoids the use of physical and verbal aggression towards the child as a means of control, avoids the tendency to emphasise only undesirable behaviours, establishes clear guidelines for the child regarding expected behaviours, develops the child's interest in performing appropriate behaviours, improves the caretaker-child relationship by providing opportunities for mutually enjoyable activities, is of educational value, and can be tailored towards the individual needs of the child.
According to the present invention the behaviour kit comprises a chart made of polyvinylchloride (PVC) covered steel plate, stickers containing desirable and undesirable behaviours and magnetic figures for use with the chart.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows the basic layout of the behaviour kit for individual children Figure 2 shows the basic layout of the group kit for use in schools, etc.
Figure 3 shows stickers relating to child behaviours Figure 4 shows magnetic figures for use with the chart Referring to the drawing the kit comprises a chart made of a thin steel plate covered with polyvinylchloride (PVC) 5, stickers 7 and magnetic figures 8. At the base of the chart the PVC covered steel is moulded into a tray 6 to hold marker pens, stickers 7 and magnetic figures 8. Screws 9 are provided for wall-mounting. The face of the individual chart is marked into columns and rows as shown in Figure 1. The columns are headed by days of the week printed onto the PVC. Reusable stickers 7 are used to indicate desirable and undesirable behaviours at left of each row. A space 10 is provided at the top of the chart for the individual child's name to be written using the marker pen.
Figure 2 shows the basic layout of the group kit, a modification of the individual kit to include children's names at far left and different coloured magnetic figures or different types of magnetic figures 8 for each behaviour.
A selection of printed stickers 7 indicating desirable and undesirable behaviours is provided for use with the chart. Examples are shown in Figure 3. Blank stickers 11 are also provided for behaviours not included which can be written with the marker pen.
Plastic figures 8 with a small magnet 12 inserted on the reverse side are provided. The example given in Figure 4 is a star.
The kit allows a reward system to be used in which appropriate rewards are given for a specific number of desirable behaviours (depending on the individual) denoted by magnetic figures placed on the chart.
