Abstract
Apparatus 1 for playing an educational game comprises a board 2 which has a grid 3 consisting of a plurality of grid sections 4 each of which grid section 4 is defined by a horizontal component 5 and a vertical component 6, one of which components represents a discrete time unit 5 and the other of which components represents a task 6, and marker means 7 adapted to be removably secured to a grid section 4 to denote the time of accomplishment of a task 6. The discrete time unit 5 is a day such as Wednesday and horizontal components 5 of the plurality of grid sections 4 represent the days of the week. <IMAGE>
Description
Apparatus for Plaving An Educational Game
The invention relates to apparatus for playing an educational game.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for display or for playing a game, comprising a substrate which has a plurality of discrete sections, and means which may be associated with a discrete section for display or game purposes.
The horizontal component may represent a discrete time unit and the vertical component may represent a task.
The discrete time unit may be a day of the week.
The board may have attaching means whereby it may be attached to a vertical substrate, such as a refrigerator door.
The board may be manufactured from plastic or from laminated cardboard.
The plurality of grid sections may form at least part of a pictorial representation.
The pictorial representation may comprise a drawing of a bird.
There may be a plurality of marker means.
The marker means may include magnetically operable attaching means whereby it may be removably secured to a grid section.
The board may include a metal part at a grid section whereby the magnetically operable marker means may operate magnetically.
The marker means may consist of a feather connected to magnetically operable attaching means.
The marker means may comprise a piece of plastic backed by a magnetic strip.
The piece of plastic may be coloured and/or illustrated.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a learning kit including apparatus for playing an educational game.
The learning kit may include an educational booklet.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 represents a front view of apparatus for playing an educational game in accordance with the invention.
Referring to the drawings there is shown apparatus 1 for playing an educational game comprising a board 2 which has a grid 3 consisting of a plurality of grid sections 4 each of which grid section 4 is defined by a horizontal component 5 and a vertical component 6, one of which components represents a discrete time unit 5 and the other of which components represents a task 6, and marker means 7 adapted to be removably secured to a grid section 4 to denote the time of accomplishment of a task 6. The discrete time unit 5 is a day such as Wednesday and horizontal components 5 of the plurality of grid sections 4 represent the days of the week.
The task 6 comprises a task such as making a bed or the brushing of teeth and the vertical components of the plurality of grid sections 4 represent various such tasks to be accomplished by a child. The task titles 7 are printed on transparent stickers 8 which are adhered to the board 2. In this way the tasks to be accomplished may be selected and put on the board 2 by the parent or child. The task titles 7 may also be printed directly onto the board 2.
The board 2 is rectangular in outline shape and substantially planar in sideview. It is manufactured from thin laminated cardboard and includes attaching means (not shown) whereby it may be adhered magnetically to a metallic substrate such as a fridge door.
The board 2 includes a metal part (not shown) at a grid section 4 whereby the marker means 7 which is magnetically operable may adhere magnetically when placed upon a grid section 4.
The marker means 7 consists, in this embodiment of a piece of plastic 7 backed by a magnetic strip (not shown). The piece of plastic is coloured.
In other embodiments, the marker means 7 could consist of a feather attached to a magnet (not shown).
The plurality of grid sections 4 making up the grid 3 form part of a pictorial representation 9 of a bird, which is coloured except at the grid 3.
In use, the marker means 7 is adhered to the grid section 4 when a task 6, such as the brushing of teeth is accomplished on a particular day, say
Wednesday, thereby colouring in the grid section 4 of the bird drawing 8. As various tasks are accomplished on various days, more marker means 7 are secured to the grid sections 4 until eventually the plurality of grid marker means 7 cover the plurality of grid sections 4 and the grid 3 is completely coloured-in. The colouring-in of the bird drawing 8 provides a suitable incentive to the child to complete the various tasks.
The bird drawing 8 in this embodiment represents a goose, and more particularly the "common loon" which has multi-coloured plumage which is partly provided by the plurality of removable grid marker means 7. This educational game encourages the child to enjoy their self-attainment and has an educative biological value. The same may be included in a learning kit which may include a handbook reiterating established facts about the chosen species of bird, i.e. the "common loon".
