Description
VALVE ALIGNING APPARATUS
This invention relates to valve aligning apparatus and, more especially, this invention relates to valve aligning apparatus for use in aligning a valve device of a flexible bag when the flexible bag forms part of container apparatus for transporting and storing fluid material.
Container apparatus for transporting and storing fluid material such as liquids, powders and granular materials is well known. The container apparatus usually comprises a base, a frame, and a flexible bag for containing the fluid material. The flexible bag may directly contain the fluid material or a liner bag containing the fluid material may be inserted inside the flexible bag. The base is usually a pallet and the frame may be collapsible or non-collapsible.
The flexible bag is provided with a valve device, for the purpose of emptying and/or filling the flexible bag with the fluid material. Usually, when the flexible bag is filled with the fluid material, the shape of the flexible bag causes the valve device to extend downwardly at an angle. When the valve device extends downwardly, it is often difficult to make a connection to the valve device, for example for the purpose of connecting an outlet pipe or an inlet pipe to the valve device. The valve device may often extend downwardly at an angle of about 45 degrees. With a large valve device, depending upon how the flexible bag hangs in the container apparatus before filling starts, the valve device can actually stick over the edge of the base and thus become damaged.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, the present invention provides valve aligning apparatus for use in aligning a valve device of a flexible bag when the flexible bag forms part of container apparatus for transporting and storing fluid material, which valve aligning apparatus comprises a valve aligning member which is constructed to upstand from a base of the container apparatus and to engage the flexible bag over a portion of the flexible bag that is adjacent the valve device, whereby the portion of the flexible bag that is adjacent the valve device is constrained to extend in a direction which is substantially at right angles to the base and whereby the valve device is enabled to extend in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base.
When the valve device extends in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base, it will be apparent that the valve device is readily available for receiving connections, for example such as an outlet pipe for emptying the fluid material from the flexible bag, or an inlet pipe for bottom filling the flexible bag with the fluid material.
Preferably, the valve aligning member is an arch member. The arch member may have straight sides extending into curved corner portions.
The arch member may have a curved top portion. The curved top portion may be a continuously curved top portion. Alternatively, the curved top portion may have a flat portion intermediate its ends. When the curved top portion has a flat portion intermediate its ends, then the arch member may be a non-symmetrical arch member.
The arch member may be of any suitable and appropriate shapes so that, for example, it may have straight sides and a straight top. Also, the arch member may be symmetrical or non-symmetrical as may be desired.
The valve aligning member will usually be constructed such as to allow the flexible bag to slide against the valve aligning member without becoming damaged, for example by becoming worn due to the sliding action wearing the flexible bag. Preferably the valve aligning member is of circular cross section. With a valve aligning member of circular cross section, the flexible bag is able easily to slide against the valve aligning member without becoming worn.
When the valve aligning member is of circular cross sect ion, then the valve aligning member is advantageously made of solid rod of circular cross section.
The valve aligning apparatus may include first and second upstanding wall members which define a compartment for the valve device. The compartment may allow the valve device to be sufficiently precisely located that it is able to be opened and closed with one hand. Without the upstanding wall members defining the compartments, the valve device may be quite loosely mounted in the container apparatus and two hands may be required for easy opening and closing of the valve device.
The first and the second wall members may be attached to the valve aligning member, for example by welding.
The valve aligning apparatus may include a platform member for enabling the valve aligning apparatus to be secured to the base of the container apparatus. The platform member may have apertures for enabling the platform member to be screwed or bolted to the base of the container apparatus. Alternatively, the platform member can be welded to the base of the container apparatus.
If desired, the valve aligning apparatus can be formed as integral part of the base of the container apparatus, in which case the platform member would then not be required.
The valve aligning apparatus of the present invention may be made from any suitable and appropriate materials. Metals will usually be employed such for example as plated mild steel.
The present invention also extends to container apparatus when provided with the valve aligning apparatus.
The container apparatus may be any known container apparatus. The container apparatus is preferably as described in my United Kingdom Patent Specification
No.2267481.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a perspective view showing valve aligning apparatus.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown valve aligning apparatus 2 for use in aligning a valve device (not shown) attached to an outlet orifice 4 in a flexible bag 6. The flexible bag 6 forms part of container apparatus 8 for transporting and storing fluid material such for example as liquids, powders and granules. The fluid material is contained in the flexible bag 6. The container apparatus 8 comprises a base 10 which is a rigid base in the form of a pallet.
Frame members 12 upstand from the four corners of the base 10 as shown and they support a lid member 14.
The valve aligning apparatus 2 comprises a valve aligning member 16 which is constructed to upstand from the base 10 of the container apparatus 8 and to engage the flexible bag 6 over a portion 18 of the flexible bag 6 that is adjacent the valve device. The portion 18 of the flexible bag 6 is constrained to extend in a direction which is substantially at right angles to the base 10. This enables the valve device to extend in a direction which is substantially parallel to the base 10.
The valve aligning member 16 is a symmetrical arch member having straight sides 20 extending into curved corner portions 22.
In order to enable the portion 18 of the flexible bag 6 to slide against the valve aligning member 16 without becoming worn, the valve aligning member 16 is advantageously made of a solid rod which is of circular cross section.
The valve aligning apparatus 2 further comprises two upstanding wall members 26. These wall members 26 define a compartment 30 for the valve device. The wall members 26 enable the valve device to be positively located and to be operated easily with one hand.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawing has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be employed. Thus, for example, different designs of valve aligning apparatus 2 to those shown in the drawing may be employed. Also, the container apparatus 8 may be of any size, shape and design providing it has a flexible bag. A liner bag (not shown) may be provided inside the flexible bag.
The valve alinging apparatus of the present invention enables the valve device to be brought naturally to the horizontal position in which it is extending substantially parallel to the base without stressing welds, for example those connecting a threaded outlet gland welded to a liner bag. Furthermore, the valve device can be positively located inboard of the base 10.
The base 10 is preferably a pallet but other types of base can be employed. i The valve device can be located inboard of the base and always in substantially the same position, regardless of the hang of the flexible bag 6 prior to filling.
