Abstract

There is provided an instrument for filling root canals in dental models with wax. The instrument comprises a reservoir (14) for wax, a capillary tube (16) communicating with the reservoir and for introducing the wax into the root canal, and means (10) for applying pressure to the wax in the reservoir to discharge the wax through the capillary tube into the root canal. The means (10) is suitably in the form of a flexible resilient bulb. <IMAGE>

Description

INSTRUMENT FOR FILLING ROOT CANALS IN DENTAL MODELS WITH WAX The present invention relates to an instrument for filling root canals in dental models with wax.
Hitherto root canals in dental models have been filled with wax by merely pouring the wax into the canals and stirring the wax in order to eliminate as far as possible air pockets in the wax. However, in practice it is not always possible to eliminate such air pockets.
The present invention provides an instrument for filling root canals in dental models with wax and which prevents, or at least reduces more than hitherto, the creation of air pockets in the wax and which also enables the root canals to be filled with wax more quickly than hitherto.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided an instrument for filling root canals in dental models with wax, the instrument comprising a reservoir for wax, a capillary tube communicating with the reservoir and for introducing the wax into the root canal, and means for applying pressure to the wax in the reservoir to discharge the wax through the capillary tube into the root canal.
Preferably the means for applying pressure to the wax in the reservoir comprises a container having a chamber communicating with the reservoir and means for pressurizing air or other gas in the chamber in order to apply pressure to wax in the reservoir.
Preferably the container comprises a flexible resilient bulb, the interior of the bulb constituting said chamber.
Preferably the reservoir is in the form of a cylinder.
The invention is further described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a front view of an instrument according to the invention; and Figure 2 is a side view of the instrument.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, an instrument for filling root canals in dental models with wax comprises a flexible resilient rubber bulb or balloon 10, a rigid tube 12 mounted on the bulb 10, a cylinder 14 mounted on the tube 12 and a stiff or rigid capillary tube 16 extending from the cylinder 14.
A metal rest 18 is attached to the tube 12.
The balloon or bulb 10 has a flat bottom and sufficiently thick walls that it can be stood upon its flat bottom to support the other parts of the instrument without itself deforming.
The interior of the bulb 10 constitutes a chamber which communicates with the interior of the cylinder 14 through the tube 12. -The interior of the cylinder 14 constitutes a reservoir for wax. One end of the capillary tube 16 opens into the interior of the cylinder 14 and the free end of the tube is open to the atmosphere.
In use of the instrument the bulb 10 is manually squeezed to discharge air from its interior through the tube 12, the cylinder 14 and the capillary tube 16 to the atmosphere. The free end of the capillary tube 16 is then dipped into molten wax and the balloon 10 is allowed to expand back to its original size, whereby wax is sucked through the capillary tube 16 into the cylinder 14. The free end of the capillary tube 16 is then positioned in a root canal of a dental model and the balloon 10 is again squeezed to apply pressure to the wax in the cylinder 14 thereby to discharge or eject the wax through the capillary tube 16 into the root canal. As the wax fills the root canal the capillary tube 16 is withdrawn from the root canal.
The root canal is thereby filled with wax without air pockets being created in the wax. The root canal is also filled relatively speedily.
