Abstract

A tool provided with a locking bar (1) for holding sheet material (4) said locking bar (1) being a cam such that on insertion of the locking bar (1) into a hole (2) in the tool and turning of the locking bar (1) sheet material (4) is held on the tool. The sheet material may be sandpaper or polishing cloth. <IMAGE>

Description

TOOL This invention relates to a tool having a locking bar for locking paper, cloth and other sheet material onto drums, pads, blocks or similar tools.
Other methods of fixing sheet material onto various tools, such as springs and clips, have been employed for some time. These methods suffer shortcomings such as lack of sufficient pressure to securely hold the sheet material in position.
This present invention provides a tool fitted with a locking bar for holding sheet material, which is inserted into a hole and which, when turned will lock and hold the sheet material taut and secure by means of the cam action provided by the shape.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1. Shows in perspective a shaped locking bar 2. A perspective view of a sanding block in accordance with the invention Referring to the drawing the locking bar comprises a specially shaped bar 1, which is placed in the hole 2, in the tool.
The recuired sheet material 4, such as sandpaper, or polishing cloth, is inserted through the slit 3 into the hole. Turning the bar 1 by means of a key, lever, socket or knob, the sheet material 4 is trapped between the side of the hole 2 and the cam shape of the bar.l, thereby locking and securely holding the sheet material 4 in position.
To release the sheet material 4, the steps described above are carried out in reverse order.
The length of ba 1 is determined and dictated by the depth of the hole 2 and or the width of the sheet material 4.
It will be noted that as the bar 1 is turned to release the sheet material 4 it partially ejects the sheet material 4 from the slit 3 thereby facilitating removal of the sheet material 4.
The locking bar 1 may be used in combination with, for example a sanding drum or a sanding block as illustrated in figures 5 and 6 respectively.

Claims (7)

1. A tool provided with a locking bar for holding sheet material, said locking bar having a cam such that on insertion of the locking bar into a hole in the tool and turning of the bar sheet material is held on the tool.
2. A tool as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the shaped bar is a close fit in the hole thereby controlling the locking and holding of sheet material.
3. A tool as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the bar has a D-shaped section with one edge of the flat then being radiused (~)
4. A tool as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3 including a device for rotating said bar.
5. A tool as claimed in any preceding Claim and having a further hole or holes for receiving additional locking bars to lock sheet material.
6. A tool as claimed in any preceding Claim in the form of a drum sander.
7. A tool as claimed in any preceding Claim in the form of a block sander.
