Abstract
A single use closure ring is profiled to hold a lid margin against the rim 2 of a cylindrical container 3 and the ends 4 and 6 of the ring are welded together. A tongue 5 extending from one end 4 is spot-welded at 10 to a cut out tongue 8 formed in the other end 6 and spaced from the end edge. A hole 14 in the tongue 5 is engageable by a tool to tear the tongue 5, and with it the tongue 8, away from the end 6 of the closure ring. The ring is of sheet metal. <IMAGE>
Description
Description
Title: Closure ring for container lid
This invention relates to a single-use closure ring of sheet metal for removable lids of cylindrical containers, which is formed as a profiled ring and surrounds with an upper, a side and a lower edge the opening wall of the container and a lid rim bearing on the container wall and sealed with a sealing ring, wherein a tear-off tongue is formed at one end of the ring and is welded to the other ring end.
The opening of such closure rings available in the market place, with which the lids for tin cans for watersoluble paints and lacquers for example are closed, presents certain difficulties.
The invention is based on the problem of so improving the closure ring of the type defined that it can be easily opened.
This object is met according to the invention by a closure ring with the features of claim 1.
The dependent claims comprise advantageous developments of the invention.
The closure ring according to the invention can be opened with a suitable tool, e.g. a pair of pliers, without expenditure of a lot of effort. The easy opening of the ring is made possible by the tongue with a tear-off section cut in the one ring end, to which tongue the other ring end is spot welded. The necessary security of the closure ring against a fall is in no wise affected by the opening aid in the form of the tongue cut-out.
The invention is explained below with reference to a closure ring shown in the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tin can whose lid is closed with the closure ring according to the invention,
Figures 2a and 2b show the ends of the closure ring spaced from one another before the welding and the ring ends spot-welded to one another, and
Figures 3a and 3b are partial, enlarged views of the closure ring fitted loose on the opening edge of a container and fixedly connected to the container edge.
The single-use closure ring 1 of sheet metal for the lid 2 of a sheet metal container 3 is formed as a profiled ring and comprises at its one end 4 a tear-off tongue 5, which is spot-welded - as is indicated by the weld point 10 - to a tongue 8 cut in the other ring end 6, spaced from its end edge 7 and having a tear-off section 9.
The tongue extends in the same circumferential direction as the tongue 5 and is separated from the end edge 7 by the tear-off section 9.
In order to close the container lid 2, whose curved over upper margin 11 seats on a sealing ring 13 bearing on the beaded opening edge 12 of the container, the closure ring 1 is fitted with its upper edge la on the upper lid margin 11 and its lower bent edge lc formed on the side edge ib of the closure ring 1 and slightly angled inwards is then bent under the beaded container edge 12 with a clinching bell, so that the lid 2 is firmly closed on the container 3 by the closure ring 1.
An engagement hole 14 for fitting a tool when opening the ring is stamped in the tear-off tongue 5 of the closure ring 1.
On tearing off the tongue 5 formed at the one ring end 4 the tongue 8 spot-welded thereto is torn out of the other ring end 6 together with the tear-off section 9, so that the closure ring 1 opens and the lid 2 can be taken off the container 3.
Claims (3)
1. A single-use closure ring of sheet metal for removable lids of cylindrical containers, which is formed as a profiled ring and surrounds with an upper, a side and a lower edge the opening wall of the container and a lid rim bearing on the container wall and sealed with a sealing ring, wherein a tear-off tongue is formed at one end of the ring and is welded to the other ring end, characterized in that the tear-off tongue at the one ring end is spot-welded to a tongue cut in the other ring end, spaced from its end edge.
2. A closure ring according to claim 1, characterized by a slightly inwardly bent lower edge formed on the side edge of the closure ring.
3. A closure ring according to claim 1 and 2, characterized by an engagement hole for a tool for opening the ring stamped into the tear-off tongue at the one ring end.
