Description

CLOSURE ARRANGEMENT FOR A CAN Field of the Invention
The present invention refers to a closure arrangement for a can obtained in a metallic sheet and of the type comprising a tubular body, with the lower edge affixing or incorporating a bottom wall and with the upper edge affixing an annular upper wall portion, which can take the form of a structural ring and whose inner peripheral edge defines a seat for seating and retaining a press-fit lid. Particularly, the invention refers to the provision of a closure arrangement for a can of the type mentioned above, which is used for containing products of progressive consumption, such as certain food products, for example powdered milk. Background of the Invention
Determined products, such as certain food products, should be submitted to a hermetic storage. However, since many of these food products are of progressive consumption, it is necessary that, after the first opening of the container, the lid, which gives access to the interior of the can, may be reclosed as many times as needed during the progressive consumption of the stored product, in order to guarantee the hermeticity of the reclosed can and protect the remaining content thereof.
There are well known from the prior art the cans with a press-fit lid, in which the latter is press-fitted onto a peripheral structural ring internal to the upper edge of the can body and tightly double seamed thereto. The hermeticity of the content is guaranteed in this type of construction by fitting the lid in the seat for seating and retaining said lid and provided in the structural ring that defines the annular upper wall of the can. In this type of closure, the tamper evident seal, which also guarantees the hermeticity, is usually defined by an aluminum metallic sheet, which is peripherally double seamed to the upper edge of the can body together with the structural ring. This inner seal is only visible when the lid is removed and it requires the use of an instrument to cut it peripherally.
While guaranteeing successive reclosings with adequate hermeticity, these known closure arrangements employing press-fit lids require the use of an instrument, m the form of a lever, to allow the user to remove the lid from its seat defined in the structural ring. It is not possible for the user to remove this type of lid by using his hands only. Summary of the Invention
It is a general object of the present invention to provide a closure arrangement using a reclosable lid for the type of can considered herein, which presents a simple construction with reduced cost, incorporating means that facilitate the opening of said can, as well as, preferably, a seal of prompt visual indication of violation.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a closure arrangement as defined above, which presents a lid that can be safely and easily handled by the consumer.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention are attained by providing a closure arrangement for a can of the type comprising a tubular body, with an upper end affixing, by a peripheral double seam, an annular upper wall, which defines, internally, a seat for the hermetic seating of a lid and from which pends a tubular skirt facing the interior of the can. According to the invention, the lid comprises: a sealing upper portion to be seated onto the seat; a retaining lateral portion to be tightly seated in the interior of the tubular skirt; a bottom portion of circular contour; and a peripheral annular portion extending radially outwardly from the sealing upper portion and incorporating, inferiorly, a peripheral skirt fitted around the peripheral double seam, the sealing upper portion of the lid carrying, inferiorly, an annular gasket of elastomeric material to be hermetically seated against the seat, upon closing the lid.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The invention will be described below, with reference to the enclosed drawings, in which: Fig. 1 is a half partial diametrical cross-sectional view of a can provided with the closure arrangement of the present invention, according to a first embodiment ; and Fig. 2 is a similar view to that of fig. 1, but illustrating a second embodiment of the present arrangement .
Description of the Preferred Embodiments According to the appended drawings, the closure arrangement of the present invention is to be applied to a can made of a metallic sheet, comprising a tubular body 10, with a lower end affixing a bottom wall (not illustrated) and with an upper end affixing, by means of a peripheral double-seam 11, an annular upper wall 20, which defines, internally, a seat 21 for the hermetic seating of a lid 30.
The annular upper wall 20 usually takes the form of a structural ring, as illustrated in fig. 1, and the seat 21, formed therein, incorporates a tubular skirt 22 facing the inside of the can. The construction of the annular upper wall 20 and of the seat 21 can be effected in different manners, as long as it allows a hermetic and safe fitting of the lid 30 into the upper part of the can, as described ahead. According to the invention and as illustrated in the appended drawings, the lid 30 is usually made of a metallic material and comprises a sealing upper portion 31, a retaining lateral portion 32, a bottom portion 33, and a peripheral annular portion 34. The sealing upper portion 31 is constructed to be seated onto the seat 21 and takes the form of a tubular wall portion with an arcuated profile, interconnecting the retaining lateral portion 32 to the peripheral annular portion 34 of the lid. The sealing upper portion 31 carries, inferiorly, an annular gasket 40 made of an elastomeric material, which is seated against the seat 21, so as to guarantee the tightness between the can body 10 and the lid 30, upon closing the latter. The constructive difference between the embodiments of figures 1 and 2 refers mainly to the extension of the sealing upper portion 31, in an arcuated profile. In fig. 2, said sealing upper portion 31 has a semi- tubular profile, facilitating the application of the annular gasket 40.
The retaining lateral portion 32 faces the interior of the can and it is arranged and dimensioned so as to be tightly seated in the interior of the tubular skirt 22, upon closing the lid, thus assuring the desired axial retention of the lid 30 in the can closed condition.
In the illustrated embodiments, the tubular skirt 22 is provided in a plane substantial orthogonal to that of the annular upper wall 20 and it further presents a free end edge that is upwardly inwardly bent in relation to the can body 10, in order to define a tubular rib 23, against which is seated a radially recessed lower portion 32a of the retaining lateral portion 32 of the lid 30. This construction imparted to the free edge of the tubular skirt 22 prevents the can from presenting an unprotected cutting edge turned to the interior of the can in the opening region thereof . The lower portion 32a incorporates the peripheral region of a bottom portion 33 of circular contour and which is axially recessed in relation to the peripheral annular portion 34, covering the whole opening that gives access to the interior of the can. The peripheral annular wall 34 matches with the sealing upper portion 31, extending radially outwardly from the latter and being constructed so as to incorporate a peripheral skirt 35 to be fitted around the peripheral double seam 11 of the body 10. The peripheral skirt 35 presents a free end edge, which is preferably outwardly upwardly bent, in order to define a rib 36 that defines a manual grasping means to allow the easy opening of the lid 30 without requiring any tools.
It should be understood that the rib 26 might present cross section shapes other than the one illustrated, provided that it assures the formation of a manual grasping means that dispenses the additional use of any instrument, such as, for example, a lever to open the lid. The present closure arrangement can be further provided with a tamper evident seal, which is defined by an aluminum foil 50 positioned under the tubular skirt 22 of the annular wall 20 and which is preferably double seamed to the peripheral double seam 11 of the can body 10, in order to guarantee a high degree of tightness during a large storage period of the can and to make evident the first opening of the can for accessing the content thereof.
