Abstract

There is provided a fluted sheet material 1, comprising means 3 such as foam to obturate the flutes 2' against entry of foreign bodies. The sheet material 1 can be used in transit boxes and as pallet pads or slip sheets, particularly in fish boxes or for transporting bottles, without risk to hygiene from matter trapped inside the flutes harbouring germs.

Description

PLASTIC MATERIAL The invention relates to plastic material, particularly fluted plastic material in sheet form.
Such material comprises two substantially parallel major surfaces or sheets secured together integrally by transverse walls or partitions, which, with the major surfaces or sheets provide parallel flutes or channels which are open at each end. This material, which is marketed under the Trade Mark 'CORREX', is strong, yet light and is a proven product for inter alia packaging purposes.
For same purposes, however, the open nature of the channel or flutes can be a disadvantage, as foreign bodies which can harbour germs can enter the flutes and render packaging made from the material unhygienic.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided a fluted sheet material, comprising means to obturate the flutes against entry of foreign bodies.
The obturating means may comprise a foam material filling each flute.
The foam may be integrally formed during forming of the sheet material. The foam may be formed by a foaming process when the sheet is formed by extrusion.
The foam may be formed in situ in the flutes as the sheet material is formed, whereby at the end of an extrusion process, the extruded sheet has integrally formed foam filling the flutes.
A sheet material embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a schematic perspective view of a sheet material according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the sheet material 1 is an extruded fluted plastic sheet material the flutes 2 of which are obturated against ingress of foreign bodies by being filled with a plastic foam 3. The foam 3 is either formed in situ, when the sheet material 1 is made, or is formed afterwards, in the otherwise open flutes 2. In either embodiment, the foam 3 provides strength, yet also provides a certain yield or "give" in a direction transverse to the plane of the major surfaces 4, 5 of the sheet 1 so that when used for packaging for say empty bottles, the "give" ensures that the necks of the bottles are not broken when there are externally imposed shocks. The sheet material can also be used in transit boxes and as pallet pads or slip sheets, particularly in fish boxes or, again, for transporting bottles.

Claims (7)

1. A fluted sheet material, comprising means to obturate the flutes against entry of foreign bodies.
2. A fluted sheet material according to Claim 1, wherein the means comprises a foam.
3. A fluted sheet material according to Claim 2, the foam filling substantially each flute.
4. A fluted sheet material according to any preceding claim, wherein the foam is integrally formed during forming of the sheet material.
5. A fluted sheet material according to any preceding claim, wherein the foam is formed in situ in the flutes as the sheet material is formed.
6. A fluted sheet material according to Claim 5, wherein the foam is formed by a foaming process when the sheet is formed by extrusion.
7. A fluted sheet material, substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
