Abstract

1467964 Laminates NIHON SUNPLY CO Ltd 19 April 1974 17182/74 Headings B5N and B5A A structural board of thermoplastics material comprises at least two spaced parallel layers each having a multiplicity of ribs on a face of the layer, the ribs on the layers respectively being disposed in intersecting relationship, with the ribs on one layer being integrally united with the ribs of the other layer at the crests of the respective ribs where the ribs intersect, the ribs on at least one of the layers having a sinuous or zigzag shape. The board may consist of two layers having ribs on their inner faces or two outer layers having ribs on their inner faces and an inner layer having ribs on both faces, the inner layer optionally comprising two layers each having ribs on one face thereof and opposite faces which are flat and which are integrally united together. The ribs may have crosssections which are substantially normal to or inclined to the faces of the respective layers on which they are formed. The ribs may have widths which are substantially uniform throughout their heights, which are reduced toward the crests of the ribs or which have enlarged crests which may be of circular or rectangular crosssection. The ribs may be equidistantly spaced apart or may be arranged into a plurality of groups which are spaced apart from each other by distances greater than the separation between adjacent ribs of a group. The ribbed layers may be produced by extruding thermoplastics material 40 through annular orifice 35 in die 30 between die blocks 32 and 33, die block 32 having formed on its outer peripheral wall serrations 36 so that ribs 42 are produced on the inner surface of tubular form 41, which extend curvilinearly if rotary die 30 is driven alternately in opposite directions. Tubular form 41 may be flattened into sheet form or longitudinally slit and fused to another web produced in the same manner. Foamed thermoplastics material may be provided between the layers, e.g. by extrusion, to partially or fully fill the spaces between the layers. The structural board may be used for packaging, floorings, roofings, partition panels, sound absorbing or heat insulating material, linings for vehicles, cushioning for benches and chairs and panels for mounting pictures and photographs.
