Abstract
227,587. Addis, F. H. Dec. 5, 1923. Rackets.-The frame of a tennis or like racket is divided at a point oppositely removed from the handle tc constitute two separate curved limbs, and screw or other manually operable means are incorporated at the division to thrust the limbs apart and thus to tighten the stringing. As shown in the Figure, the head of the racket frame is divided and blocks c are fitted to the adjacent ends. A screw b<1> with oppositely-threaded ends screws into the blocks, and when rotated in the correct direction by means of a centre-piece b forces the limbs of the frame apart and thus tightens the stringing. The blocks may have inwardly extending parts through which the stringing may pass. A few inches from the screw b<1> a hinged, wired, rebated, or other pivotal joint may be made in each limb of the frame to allow additional freedom to the end portions. In a modification, the two-part screw b<1> is replaced by a single-ended screw working in one block and pressing against the other. In a further modification, a worm and worm wheel are used to rotate the screw b<1>, whilst in another modification the frame is expanded by toggle links tightened by a screw. In a further modification the frame is expanded by a wedge operated by a screw. Locking means may be provided to hold the expansion device after adjustment.
