Abstract

The mechanism which can be applied to any structure regardless of size, shape and material providing an original and effective means of opening and closing, an aperture. (See Figures 1 and 2). A closure e.g. for a package comprises flaps on a main body adhered to a corresponding number of flaps on an outer sliding sleeve. When this sleeve is slid longitudinally along the main body the aperture is opened (sleeve slid away from aperture) or closed (sleeve slid towards aperture) by the action of the flaps of the main body acting on those of the sleeve. <IMAGE>

Description

OPENING/CLOSURE MECHANISM This document outlines the innovation of a new opening/closure mechanism that can be applied to a wide range of openable structures.
A specific embodiment of this innovation is in the packaging field. Most containers have a lid that lifts clear of the container or a hinged flap which is closed and secured by a tab.
This mechanism provides an effective and novel opening and closure device that could be applied to any number of containers irrespective of their shape or material.
This opening/closure mechanism can be made from any material with hinges incorporated into it, be they faceted or integral (as is the case of cardboard or such plastics as polyprope]ene). The mechanism, comprising of any number of flaps is operated by the sliding of a sleeve longitudinally in relation to the opening/closing end of the main structure. The hinged flaps of the sleeve are adhered to corresponding flaps on the main body of the structure.
A specific embodiment of the innovation will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates in isometric projection a view of a hexagonal container which incorporates this opening/closure mechanism in the closed position.
Figure 2 illustrates the same container in the open position with the sleeve slid longitudinally downward away from the opening end.
Figure 3 is a detailed illustration of how the hinged flaps on the main body of the container relate to the multi-hinged flaps of the sliding sleeve.
Referring to the drawing the mechanism comprises a sleeve (1), fitted around the main body of the container (2), with integral hinges at points (3), (4), and (5).
In order to open the container, the sleeve is slid downwards (indicated by the arrow in Figure 2). The multi-hinged flaps, (6), (7), and (8) of the main body, are then exposed, their hinge points (9), (10), and (11) now visible. The flaps (6), (7), and (8) of the main body being adhered to the flaps of the sleeve at points (12), (13), and (14), exert a force pulling the flaps of the sleeve open and closed depending upon whether the sleeve is raised or lowered.
The arrangement of the hinges (9), (10), and (11) on the flaps of the main body and the positions of the adhered points (12), (13), and (14) to those of the sleeve can be used to determine the precision of the movement of the flaps (3), (4), and (5) giving the opportunity to 'fine tune' these movements, thus altering the ratio of the movements of the flaps in relation to the manoeuvres of the sleeve. This also gives the opportunity to time the movements of the flaps so that they can open or close in any specific order.

Claims (7)

1 The opening/closure mechanism comprises of two faceted components, one being the main body of the structure and the other being the movable sleeve.
2 The opening/closure mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 is operated by the action of hinged flaps on the main body of the structure acting upon the flaps of the sleeve.
3 The opening/closure mechanism as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2 can be opened or closed by means of sliding the sleeve downwards or upwards respectively in relation to the opening/ closing end of the structure.
4 The opening/closure mechanism as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2 and Claim 3 can be made of any material with hinges incorporated into it, be they faceted or integral.
5 The opening/closure mechanism as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2, Claim 3 and Claim 4 can have any number of hinged flaps.
6 The opening/closure mechanism as claimed in any preceding claim, can have the movement of any or all of its hinged flaps adjusted at the manufacturing stage by the positioning of the hinges and adhesion points of the flaps of the sleeve to those of the main body.
7 The opening/closure mechanism is substantially described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 3 of the accompanying drawing.
