Abstract
Catalysts for the synthesis of ammonia are prepared by heating in a current of oxygen a mixture of artificial or natural iron oxides with substances possessing a high combination heat wth oxygen until the temperature becomes near or equal to that of ebullition. Instead of or in conjunction with oxides of iron may be employed oxides of cobalt, nickel, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten or uranium, or compounds producing the oxides may be used. Heat-irreducible metal oxides, such as alkaline earth oxides, or metals giving rise thereto may also be present. The substances possessing a high combination heat with oxygen are defined as those substances giving out the same as or a greater number of calories per gram-atom than carbon does under combustion; carbon, magnesium, aluminium and calcium are given as instances, and catalytic poisons are excluded. According to the example, powdered magnetite is mixed with calcined dolomite, carbon and either aluminium, calcium or magnesium, and a current of pure oxygen is projected on to or passed through the heated mass until violent ebullition ceases and the mass on cooling turns pasty; the cooled product is broken up for use.
