Abstract

A brush holder 1 hooks over the rim 8 of a container 9 and provides a platform 7 to hold a brush while temporarily not being used. The angled platform 7 slopes downwards inside the container 9 to allow any excess liquid to drip back in. Two stems 5 inside the rim 8 act as hooks to prevent the brush holder from falling away thereby causing the two wings 4 to embrace the outside of the container 9 and create purchase. The two stems 5 also push against the inside of the container 9 and prevent the holder from toppling inwards. The toothed wall 6 at the lower end of the platform 7 stops the brush from slipping while allowing the liquid through. A bracket 3 underneath the platform 7 creates the slope required. <IMAGE>

Description

BRUSH HOLDER This invention relates to a brush holder which is designed to hold a brush over the liquid-filled container while it is temporarily not being used.
When using a brush with a liquid substance - such as paint, varnish or creosote there may be a need to stop working temporarily. It is at this point that the decision has to be made as to what to do with the brush retaining the liquid. In order to endeavour to work neatly and minimise the mess to the surrounding area, it is usual to place the brush upon old newspapers, old cloth or across the top of the vessel containing the liquid. The problem with this is that later, when the brush is picked up again, it will invariably become stuck to whatever it was placed upon and, if having been placed across the top of the container, allow the substance to drip down the sides of the vessel. After a few times this will inevitably lead to getting the liquid on hands, the brush handle or elsewhere thereby creating a messy working environment.
It is the object of this invention to provide a device upon which the brush may be temporarily placed in order that the working liquid retained on the brush may drip neatly back into the container thereby keeping the brush handle clean and also avoid causing unnecessary mess to the surrounding area.
This invention provides a device that is able to be attached to the rim of a circular container and provide an angled platform upon which brushes may be placed in order that the liquid may drip back into the vessel. The brush holder hooks across the rim of the container with the angled platform sloping down inside the vessel.
The brush holder is held onto the outside of the container by a pair of wings which extend from an angled bracket underneath the platform. The wings curve around the wall of the container to create more purchase should, by chance, more weight be applied outside the rim than inside. The wings will then press against the container and force the hooks to brace the inside of the rim.
The hooks are two stems which are joined to the underside of the platform inside the rim. These stems prevent the brush holder from falling away from the container by hooking over and inside the rim. The two stems should also be long enough to prevent the brush holder from falling into the container by pressing against the inside wall. It is important that the brush holder has more platform area inside the rim than outside. This slightly uneven balance pushes the stems against the inside wall of the container and will prevent the brush holder from toppling even when the container is nearly empty (and therefore lighter).
The slope of the platform is created by the angled bracket which is joined underneath in the centre. This bracket extends downwards and it is from this that the wings curve around the sides of the container.
The platform is narrower at the top than the bottom to be more suited to accepting a brush and also to be lighter outside the rim. Across the base end of the platform there is a toothed wall to stop the brush from slipping and allow the liquid through.
At the lower and wider ends of the platform there is, on either side, a raised guide which allows any excess liquid to be directed down the brush holder and into the container thereby stopping it from dripping over the sides.
There now follows a detailed description of the brush holder, to be read with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrates this invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the brush holder; and Figure 2 is a plan view of the brush holder.
The brush holder 1 is attached to the container 9 by hooking it across the rim 8. When in position it allows a brush to be placed on the angled platform 7 when not in use. The brush is restrained from slipping down the platform 7 by a toothed wall 6. The working liquid is then allowed to seep back into the container 9. The guides 2 on either side of the platform 7 prevent any of the liquid dripping over the sides.
The brush holder 1 is prevented from falling away from the container 9 by the two stems 5 which are hooked over and inside the rim 8. Also the two wings 4 are curved around the outside of the container 9 to increase purchase. The brush holder 1 is stopped from falling inside the container 9 by the two stems 5 pressing against the inner wall. This force is created by the slightly uneven balance of the brush holder 1 having more platform area inside the rim 8 of the container 9 than outside.
This also gives the greater stability required of the brush holder 1 when the container is nearly empty (and therefore lighter).
The angled bracket 3 is joined between the centre of the underside of the platform 7 and the wings 4. It is the bracket 3 that creates the angle for the platform 7 and also provides strength for the brush holder 1 itself.

Claims (8)

1. A brush holder which is designed to fit onto the rim of a liquid filled container to hold a brush while it is temporarily not being used.
2. A brush holder according to Claim 1 wherein the wings embrace the outside of the container.
3. A brush holder according to Claims 1 and 2 wherein the platform is created by an angled bracket attached underneath.
4. A brush holder according to Claim 3 wherein the brush is prevented from slipping by a toothed wall at the lower end of the platform.
5. A brush holder according to any one of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the stems extend from beneath the platform inside the rim to act as hooks and prevent toppling.
6. A brush holder according to Claim 5 wherein the guides on either side direct any excess liquid down the platform and prevent it from dripping over the edges.
7. A brush holder according to Claim 6 wherein the platform area is larger inside the rim to brace against the inside of the container to prevent toppling when the container S level of liquid is low.
8. A brush holder designed to hold a brush temporarily as described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
