Abstract

A paint brush or roller holder comprises an open topped plastics material container 1 which is inwardly tapered from a top, open, end 2 to a bottom, closed, end 3. One side of the container 1 has an extension 4 which terminates in a fixing hook 5. The fixing hook 5 is preferably flexible and allows attachment of the container 1 to the top rim 6 of a paint pot 7. The container provides means for storing a paint brush 9 for short periods during use. The container 1 can also be filled with thinners or the like to provide means for keeping a paint brush soft. The container may include a pair of fixing hooks (24, Figure 5) which fit either side of a handle. A clip may be provided (11, Figure 3) to support the shaft of a roller. <IMAGE>

Description

"Brush Holder" This invention relates to a brush holder especially but not exclusively for paint brushes or rollers.
During painting operations the user of a paint brush will, from time to time, wish to lay down the paint brush. Normally this is done by laying the paint brush across the rim of the paint tin. This can often cause a mess with paint dripping occurring or the paint brush falling off the tin or into the paint. In addition with large sizes of tins or drums used by professional painters the brush cannot be laid across the drum as the drum will often be too wide. The paint brush will often therefore be either left submerged in the paint or laid beside the container either of which may be messy.
Another problem during painting operations is that it is not always possible to complete the painting job in a single session. This is particularly so in the do it yourself field where, for example, a person may carry out a painting operation on a particular area over a number of sessions. Between each successive session it is necessary to prevent the paint brush being used from hardening. The brush must therefore either be completely cleaned after each session which is time consuming or be kept in a container in brush softener or cleaner. Such containers are often empty tins or jars which are a nuisance to have lying around and can be easily knocked over.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a neat and convenient means of storing paint brushes during use.
According to the present invention there is provided a paint brush holder especially but not exclusively for paint brushes or rollers comprising an open topped container shaped to receive a paint brush and having means thereon for attachment to a paint pot.
Preferably the means for attachment to a paint pot comprises at least one support member forming an extension of one side of the container and forming a hook means for attachment to the top of a paint pot.
Preferably also the support member or members are resilient for retention on the top of a paint pot.
Preferably also the container is inwardly tapered towards its base.
Preferably also the container is formed from a plastics material which is resistant to paint thinners and the like.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig 1 is a sectional side view of a first embodiment of a paint brush holder in accordance with the present invention fixed to a paint pot; Fig 2 is a sectional side view of a paint brush holder of a larger size attached to a larger paint pot; Fig 3 is a front view of a holder suitable for paint rollers; Fig. 4 is a sectional side view of a second embodiment of a paint brush holder in accordance with the present invention; Fig.5 is a perspective view of the brush holder of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a front view of a brush holder attached to a paint pot.
Referring to Fig 1 of the drawings, a paint brush holder in accordance with the present invention comprises an open topped plastics material container 1 which is inwardly tapered from a top, open, end 2 to a bottom, closed, end 3. One side of the container 1 has an extension 4 which terminates in a fixing hook 5.
The fixing hook 5 allows attachment of the container 1 to the top rim 6 of a paint pot 7.
In use the container 1 can be used to hold a paint brush 9 wherever the user wishes to lay the brush down for a short period or when the job is interrupted for any reason. The brush holder can also be used most effectively to carry the paint brush 9 to and from the workplace. Clearly the brush holder is also useful in conjunction with containers of materials other than paint which are applied by brush.
If it is necessary to leave the paint brush 9 for a longer period some water, turps, thinners or the like 8 is placed in the container 1 following attachment to the paint pot 7. A paint brush 9 can then be inserted in the container 1 which holds the brush 9 upright and covers the head of the brush in thinners or the like 8.
In this way the brush 9 can be kept soft if it is to be left overnight or if particularly fast drying paints are being used. The taper of the container 1 from the top 2 to the bottom 3 ensures that the brush 9 has an easy entry to the container 1 and minimises the contact between paint and air.
The container 1 is formed from plastics material for lightness and ease of manufacture with the particular material chosen being able to withstand exposure to the various types of thinners and brush cleaners likely to be used.
Various sizes of brush holder can be manufactured to cater for the various common sizes of brush and Fig 2 illustrates an example of a larger size to that shown in Fig 1. This brush holder is identical in concept to that shown in Fig 1 but is of a larger size and like parts are therefore accorded like reference numerals.
A further embodiment of the holder is illustrated in Fig 3. This particular embodiment is suitable for use with a small roller 10, the particular example illustrated being a 4 inch radiator roller. The container 1 of this roller is shaped so as to be suitable to receive the roller 10 and a clip 11 is provided to support the shaft 12 of the roller 10.
A still further embodiment of brush holder is shown in Fig. 4 to 6. This embodiment is essentially similar to that shown in Fig. 1 comprising a container 21 having an open end 22 and closed end 23. At one side of the container a pair of support arms 24 extend upwardly and curve around to form retaining hooks 25. The hooks 25 are resilient and overlap the support arms 24 thus ensuring a tight grip is obtained on a paint pot 7 in use. As before various sizes can be produced for different sizes of brush. The example illustrated in Fig. 6 shows a 2 1/2" brush 9 in an appropriately sized brush holder fitted to a 2 1/2 litre paint pot 7.
As the support arms 24 form a pair of side by side retaining hooks 25 the holder can be slotted onto a paint pot on either side of a handle to allow the paint pot 7 to be carried without the extra weight of the brush upsetting the balance of the paint pot 7.
The retaining hooks 25 form a loop sufficiently large to fit over the large rim found on modern plastics paint pots 7.
Obviously where two brushes or brush and roller are required for a single paint job, two brush holders can be attached to a paint pot so that one brush or roller is retained for use while the other brush or roller is in use.
The brush holder can be manufactured in a one piece moulding or assembled from separate components as required.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
