Abstract

A device for holding a brush is provided comprising a brush holder 2 which holds a brush 9 in an erect position with its handle uppermost, and means for mounting the brush holder 2 such that any drips from the brush 9 fall into a suitable receptacle. An advantage of the invention is that any drips from the brush 9 fall back into the paint tin 8 thereby conserving paint. A further advantage of the invention is that it can be readily made in different sizes to accommodate different sized brushes. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Brush holder This invention relates to a holder for brushes.
In the following specification the term "brush" will be used to cover all brushes used for applying paint, varnish and the like. Whilst decorating, for example painting, during pauses between painting with the brush it is common practice to rest the brush in a horizontal position across the top of the paint tin. This procedure does have a number of disadvantages, namely, that in this position paint can drip from the brush onto the floor and also in this position the brush may easily be knocked off the top of the tin especially if the tin is moved. Another problem which is caused whilst painting is that during painting or varnishing the paint or varnish tends to gravitate towards the handle of the brush. The usual method of counteracting this action is to wipe the brush on the inside edge of the paint tin. However, particularly with larger brushes because of the curve of the rim only a proportion of the bristles of the brush are properly wiped and the section in the centre can be missed completely.
When the brush is subsequently used paint or varnish then runs down the handle.
According to this invention there is provided a device for holding a brush as hereinbefore defined when not in use, comprising a brush holder which holds a brush in an erect position with its handle uppermost, and means for mounting the brush holder such that any drips from the brush fall into a suitable receptacle.
The means for mounting the brush holder may in fact include a dish lying beneath the base of the brush to catch any drips from the brush but preferably the means for mounting the brush holder is means for mounting the brush holder onto a paint tin or a varnish tin.
This mounting means is preferably a bulldog clip which clips to the edge of a paint tin and allows paint to run off the edge of the brush into the paint tin.
Preferably the device allows other brushes to be dipped into the tin while the device is attached to the tin.
Thus when the paint brush is not in use the brush is held firmly in position on the paint tin and cannot be knocked off and also no drips of paint fall on the floor. The erect position of the brush also tends to allow any excess paint to gravitate downwards away from the brush to prevent clogging.
Preferably the brush holder comprises a vertical plate which curves upwards at its base to provide a lower rest for the brush and a strap which is looped near the top of the back plate. The brush is inserted through the strap and rests between the back plate and the strap and on the base of the back plate to hold it firmly. The strap is very useful since it can be used to wipe any excess paint or varnish off the brush.
The device may be made of metal or plastic and can be made in different sizes to accommodate different sized brushes. Such sizes may be a half to one inch; one and a half to two inch; two and a half to three inch; three and a half to four inch and four and a half to five inch.
An example of a paint brush holder in accordance with the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view of the device; Figure 2 is a front view of the device; and, Figure 3 is a schematic side view of the device in its in use position.
A device 1 for holding a brush comprises a brush holder 2 and means 3 for mounting the brush such that any drips from the brush fall into a suitable receptacle.
The brush holder 2 comprises a back plate 4 which is substantially vertical but curves upwards at its base 5 in order to support the base of the brush. A strap 6 is attached near the top of the back plate 4 and forms a generally rectangular enclosure for a paint brush 9. The means for mounting a brush 3 comprises a standard bulldog clip 7 attached to the back plate 4. In use the bulldog clip 7 is clipped on to the side of a paint tin 8 such that the paint brush holder 2 is in an erect position. The paint brush 9 may then be inserted through the strap 6 to rest on the base 5 of the back plate to be held steadily in position. Any drips from brush 9 fall into the paint tin 8. However when the device is in position the paint brush may be inserted in the space 10 between the device 1 and the side of the paint tin 8 in order to pick up paint for painting.
The particular device 1 shown in the drawings is for a two and a half inch to three inch paint brush.
