Abstract

A stockinette glove has contacts 3 and a LED 2 mounted on it and powered by batteries 4 mounted on a wristband 6. These are worn on the right hand and wrist and can be used at night to signal the intention of the wearer (e.g. a cyclist) to change position on a road. The LED 2 illuminates a red retroreflective indicator area 16 on the back of the hand. The glove can be worn on its own or pulled over gloves or gauntlet in the winter. <IMAGE>

Description

SIGNALLING GLOVE The invention relates to a means of signalling, at night time, the intention of a cyclist, motorcyclist or other road user to change their position on the road.
When the right arm is held out, for example, to indicate the intention of turning right, it may not be clearly seen by other road users. The purpose of the signalling glove is to illuminate a red area on the glove which can be in the form of an arrow, circle or other shape. The illumination is under the control of the fingers of the right hand and can be made to flash on and off if required.
The invention, in one form, consists of four parts.
1. The main body of the device. figure 1. This is made from in the form of a glove, 1 mitten, mitt, strap or other hand covering.
2. The indicating device consisting of a red disk or arrow 16 illuminated from behind by a Light Emitting Diode (LED) 2.
3. The switching contacts are two metal eyelets 3 fitted on the glove.
4. Battery holder 5 is attached to a wristband 6 and contains two ARR batteries 4. figure 3.
5. The completed assembly is shown at figure 4.
The glove is constructed of stockinette material to take advantage of its ability to stretch and thus enable the device to be used on its own in the summer or to be worn over a glove or gauntlet in the winter. If required it could be made as a single season device when it could be constructed from any fabric, leather, plastic or other material.
The eyelets 3 are rivetted to the material in the positions shown on figure 1.
Two strips of material 7 & 8 are sewn down the inside of the glove 1 to make conduits to carry the wires from the eyelets.
The wires 9 & 1 are soldered to the eyelets. One wire going to the battery connector 11 figure 2, and the other passing through the material at the back of the hand 12 figure 1, and being soldered to the cathode of the LED 2.
R buffer resister 14 is soldered to the anode lead of the LED 2 and a third wire 15 is soldered to the resister 14. This wire passes through the glove at the back of the hand 13 and then through the side of the conduit 7 passing down the conduit to the battery connector 11.
The wristband 6 is made from inch and a half wide strip of elastic to which is attached, by impact adhesive, a RAR two cell battery holder 5. The wristband 6 is made long enough to go round the wrist over a glove or gauntlet and has the loop section of a piece of VELCRO 17 attached with impact adhesive to its end. Two pieces of hook section VELCRO 18 are supplied and are intended to be attached with adhesive to the wristband 6 in such positions that the band fits both the bare wrist and over the glove or gauntlet. The connections between the battery holder 5 and the glove 1 are made by press stud connectors 11.
The reflective material 16 is fitted to the back of the glove 1 over the LED 2 and resistor 14. R suitable reflector is the Moonshine disk made of red microprism retroreflective material (Reflexite) manufactured by Moonshine Safety Reflective Ltd.
Reddich. This has an adhesive back and can be sewn on to the glove 1 to make it more secure.
