Abstract

A rolling element bearing for use with a pulse ring in an ABS system has on an outer surface of a race thereof a peripherally-extending groove having an undulating surface, the groove being adapted to receive a deformable portion of the pulse ring and thereby secure the ring against axial and rotational movement relative to the bearing.

Description

Rolling Element Bearing with Pulse Ring for ABS Systems The invention relates to a rolling-element type bearing with a pulse ring for ABS systems.
Rolling element bearings of this type are mostly used as wheel bearings or as a wheel bearing unit in vehicles which have an automatic safeguard against wheel or ring during the braking process, known as ABS. The outer race or ring of the bearing carries a pulse ring which has on a flange part a relatively large number of gaps which activate a pulse receiver disposed with a minimal gap therefrom. A gap which remains the same when the bearing rotates is necessary in order to achieve electric pulses of the same magnitude during one rotation. The smallest possible gap is needed so that even at the very slowest travelling speed pulses of sufficient magnitude can be achieved.
Therefore, a high precision fitment of the pulse ring and pulse receiver is required.
In the case of a rolling element bearing known from DE-GM 8.814.620, the pulse ring is pressed onto the shoulder area of the bearing ring and is axially secured by the integral.forming of material into the groove in the bearing ring. The pulse ring is secured against rotating by depressions extending crosswise on the groove flanks. Although it is not possible to criticise the reliable seating of the prior art pulse ring, a simpler method of machining is desirable.
In one aspect the invention provides a rolling element bearing for use with a pulse ring in an ABS system, a race of the bearing having on an outer surface thereof a peripherally-extending groove having an undulating surface, the groove being adapted to receive a deformable portion of the pulse ring and thereby secure the ring against axial and rotational movement relative to the bearing.
The undulating surface may terminate at an edge of the groove which undulates axially of the bearing.
The groove may be bounded by two axially-undulating edges spaced axially of the bearing.
The undulations of the groove edges may be out of phase with each other whereby the groove has alternating portions of alternatively changing width and/or alternately changing depth.
Alternatively, the undulations of the groove edges may be in phase with each other whereby the groove follows a path which undulates axially of the bearing.
In a further aspect directed to the same inventive concept the invention provides a rolling element bearing for use with a pulse ring in an ABS system, a race of the bearing having on an outer surface thereof a peripherallyextending groove with portions of alternately changing depth and/or alternately changing width, the groove being adapted to receive a deformable portion of the pulse ring and thereby secure the ring against axial and rotational movement relative to the bearing.
In another aspect directed to the same inventive concept the invention provides a rolling element bearing for use with a pulse ring in an ABS system, a race of the bearing having on an outer surface thereof a peripherallyextending groove which follows a path undulating axially of the bearing, with portions of alternately changing depth and/or alternately changing width, the groove being adapted to receive a deformable portion of the pulse ring and thereby to secure the ring against axial and rotation movement relative to the bearing.
In each embodiment the groove may be machined into the race.
The invention also provides a bearing as set forth above provided with a pulse ring carried on said race and having a portion thereof deformed into the groove.
By reason of the changing width and/or depth of the groove, there are created in the peripheral direction spaced portions which provide pinch points or other engagements for the integrally formed material of the pulse ring. This is equally true in the case of the alternating bends in the alternative undulating groove, It is sufficient at some locations distributed around the periphery for material from the pulse ring to be integrally formed into the groove in order to achieve a sufficient safeguard against rotation. However, it is also possible for the entire periphery of the pulse ring to be machined by rollers or for marginal portions to be flanged over or crimped. Grooves of the type according to the invention can easily be fashioned in that a cutting tool for example a grinding wheel, performs an oscillating axial and/or radial movement in relation to the bearing ring. This can often be done during another stage in the machining of the bearing ring. This simplified machining considerably reduces the overall production costs. Further features are described hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows a partial longitudinal section through the race with the pulse ring of a rolling type bearing for ABS systems with a form-locking fitment in the marginal region and an annular groove of changing width and depth, and Fig. 2 shows the arrangement according to Fig. 1 with, in contrast to the above, a pulse ring fixed by being rolled into a annular groove which is axially undulating in a peripheral direction.
Figs. 1 and 2 show a shoulder area of the rotating race 2 of a ball bearing with a pulse ring 3. This latter is in each case pulled onto the shoulder area 1 via a press fit and is positioned accordingly. In this position, the pulse rings 3 are axially form-lockingly fixed by partial portions 4 of the sleeve-like area. According to Fig. 1, the race 2 comprises a substantially V-profiled annular groove 6, which is machined into the shoulder area 1. Parts 4 of the marginal zone of the sleeve-like region 5 which are distributed around the periphery are integrally formed radially into the annular groove 6 which, viewed over the periphery, is alternately widely and alternately deeply machined. This results in the groove having undulating surfaces terminating at the edges of the groove in undulating (ie. sinuous, wave-like) edges which are out of phase with each other. The groove is produced for instance by a V-shaped profiled grinding wheel which is advanced radially and alternately in synchronism with the rotary feed of the race 2. Upon integral forming of the material of the pulse ring 3, form closure takes place in both an axial and in a peripheral direction.
According to Fig. 2, a semi-circularly profiled annular groove 7 is provided into which the substantially middle portion of the sleeve-like area 5 is formed by rolling. The peripherally-extending annular groove 7 is axially of undulating construction and of consistent width. It has a surface the side portions of which undulate axially of the bearing and terminate in edge which have axial undulations in phase with each other. Here, too, after rolling in the ring 3 is located against both rotation and axial movement relative to the bearing.
